Following Boris’s speech this afternoon on boosting training post-Covid, the BBC’s Faisal Islam claimed on Twitter that Boris has stolen Joe Biden’s slogan of “Build back better”. It might make for easy retweets, however it’s just not true. Boris first used the phrase at the end of June to launch his new house-building programme. The earliest record Guido can find of Biden using the phrase is over a week later on the 9th July when setting out his own economic recovery agenda. Prince Harry and Meghan have once again broken with royal rules to tell voters to “reject hate speech” at the “most important election of our lifetime”. Filmed in the garden of their $14 million mansion in California, the royal Santa Barbara couple said that while Prince Harry can’t vote, they will work to “reimagine the world around us” and “build worlds of compassion”. Obama said Britain would be at “the back of the queue” on trade deals whereas Trump supported Brexit and dislikes complicated deals with trading blocs. This implies Britain would be ahead of the EU in the trade queue.
Trump also likes the UK far more than Obama did. His mother was born in the Isle of Lewis and he chose Scotland to build his most ambitious golf course. Obama had a bust of Churchill removed from the Oval Office.
Brexit negotiations may improve dramatically if Trump’s scepticism about NATO pushes EU countries into the arms of Britain. The UK is the second biggest military power in NATO after America and has nuclear weapons. Trump’s victory has increased cautious speculation that Front National leader Marine Le Pen could win the French election. This would very likely spell the end of the EU as we know it…

CNN’s exit poll shows how Trump increased the Republican share of the Black and Latino vote over Mitt Romney. He improved the Latino share by 2% and the African American vote by 1%. White women also voted overwhelmingly for Trump – 53% to Hillary’s 43%. Despite all of his comments he actually did better than Romney with women and minorities.
