“The government’s proposal to reduce the proportion of their sentence that some more serious offenders will have to serve in prison from 67% to 50% is opposed by 82% of Britons. This is in fact the highest level of opposition that any of 14 proposals garnered.
Likewise, 61% are opposed to reducing the proportion of their sentence that less serious offenders have to serve in prison from 40-50% to 33%.
Ministers have also reportedly been examining converting women’s prisons to house male offenders, a move which is also opposed by most Britons (59%).
A recent proposal from Reform UK to rent prison space overseas is more divisive, with 40% of Britons in favour but 41% against.”
The public prefers building more prisons at 81% support and releasing foreign nationals early so they can be deported at 78%. The government is currently briefing that prison laundries can be converted into cells. Other countries just cram the prisons…
Former Treasury minister and adviser to Burnham in the Makerfield campaign Lord Jim O’Neill, who has turned down a role in his government, said Burnham’s first statement Commons was:
“The last thing investors wanted to hear… gilt yields have risen by a 0.25% in one day, which is a lot. We’ve not had that since Liz Truss days… If your country is under the focus of ‘can they come up with a sensible fiscal strategy’ on a day when the markets think ‘well no, you’re not showing any sign of it’ you’re going to have a tough day…if it stays like this your mortgage rate is going up.”
