As Ulstermen Sell British Liberties, the Irish Can Vote to Preserve European Liberty

On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916 on the steps of the General Post Office the Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read out. It included the words

We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people. In every generation the Irish people have asserted their right to national freedom and sovereignty; six times during the past three hundred years they have asserted it in arms. Standing on that fundamental right and again asserting it in arms in the face of the world, we hereby proclaim the Irish Republic as a Sovereign Independent State. And we pledge our lives and the lives of our comrades-in-arms to the cause of its freedom, of its welfare, and of its exaltation among the nations… In this supreme hour the Irish nation must, by its valour and discipline and by the readiness of its children to sacrifice themselves for the common good, prove itself worthy of the august destiny to which it is called.

The seven signatories of the Irish Proclamation: Padraig Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke, Thomas MacDonagh, Sean MacDermott, Joseph Plunkett, and Eamonn Ceannt were executed for their efforts to secure a free Ireland.

Guido’s vote today will be cast against the Lisbon Treaty. Why, after so long a struggle and much spilt blood, swap subjugation to laws made in Westminster for undemocratic rule from Brussels?

Due to the foresight of the drafters of the Irish Constitution we are the only people in all of Europe to be asked if we wish to irrevocably concede our sovereignty. We won’t be asked again once the European superstate becomes a reality. Ireland was Europe’s first colony, we are now the last sovereign democracy. For ourselves and all those who have no voice, the Irish must say “No”.

+++ Shock Poll Irish Times : No 35% Yes 30% +++

RTE News Flash 22:08

The latest opinion poll on the Lisbon Referendum is showing the ‘No’ side surging ahead in a dramatic reversal of opinion. The TNS/mrbi poll in tomorrow’s Irish Times shows opponents of the Treaty with a 5% lead over those in favour.

Up to now, opinion polls on the Referendum campaign have consistently shown the ‘Yes’ side ahead, although opponents have been closing the gap. But now the ‘No’ side has done more than that, surging into a commanding lead with just a week to polling day.

The poll shows the ‘Yes’ side at 30%, down five points since their last poll three weeks ago, while the ‘No’ side is at 35%, up a staggering 17%, with ‘Don’t Knows’ down 12 at 35%.

If that result is repeated next week, the political establishment is heading for a crushing defeat and the Lisbon Treaty is dead.

Could Ireland save European civilisation again? We are a contrary people…

Get Down to Grosvenor Place for Noon (and Free Guinness)

Midday today will see supporters of the I Want a Referendum campaign outside the Irish Embassy.

Guido will be supporting them in the sunshine and then moving on to the Guinness Guzzling fund raiser (see below for how to donate).

Guido will be out-drinking the national chairman of Conservative Future, Michael Rock. He is a big lad so it could be a close run thing…

Sponsor Guido in the Anglo-Irish Guinness Guzzling Competition

At midday tomorrow I Want a Referendum campaigners will be gathering outside the Irish embassy to congratulate the Irish on getting the referendum that Brown has denied the British. All over Europe pro-referendum campaigners will be turning up at Irish embassies.
Once the political niceties are out of the way the serious business of the day will begin. The first ever Anglo-Irish Guinness necking competition will get underway. In the green corner Guido will take on the might of the Conservative Future Chairman Michael Rock in the blue corner. Whoever manages to guzzle 4 pints of Guinness quickest will be crowned champion.

Get involved in this titanic struggle by pledging money. You can sponsor Guido or Michael through I Want a Referendum’s PayPal link:

All money raised will go to referendum campaigners
from the winner’s home country.
Depending on who downs the Guinness first, the funds will then be paid out to either Stuart Wheeler’s Fighting Fund by Michael Rock if he wins, or if Guido wins, he will pay it to the Irish No campaign being run by Libertas.* Michael will be wearing England colours, Guido will of course be wearing an Irish shirt…

By happy coincidence this knees-up is on the last day that Londoners will still be allowed to drink legally on the underground. All who are still standing after the Irish bash (and those light enough to be carried) will be heading over to Liverpool St for the Last Orders on the Underground party on the Circle Line. Unfortunately that starts at 9pm so Guido won’t be able to make it…

UPDATE : I Want a Referendum campaign just called – there will be free Guinness for all who turn up!

*Guido can legally donate to the Irish No Campaign because he is an Irish citizen.

Taxodus – Enterprises Flee UK Tax Regime

The news that WPP is considering fleeing UK shores to escape ever increasing taxes resulting from Gordon’s prolificacy must signal that business has had enough of Gordon’s tax and spend policies. Every week a major business seems to make the move, Ireland is continually welcoming companies keen to halve their tax bill.

The Irish benefit massively and the inward investment has helped make Irish per capita incomes now higher than in the UK. In the last 11 years Gordon’s big government and big tax bill thinking has contrasted with Ireland’s more Thatcherite approach – resulting in Ireland becoming richer. It has come to something when the republic is spending hundreds of millions of euros to help the poor neighbour in the North upgrade infrastructure. Eurosceptics who claim Ireland is subsidised by EU funds are out of date. Nowadays Ireland is a net loser from the EU financially.

Gordon says he is listening, well he should hear what businesses are saying and see what they are doing. The tax base is narrowing and will continue to do so until he takes the low tax, high growth route to prosperity. The taxodus across the Irish sea will only increase otherwise…

Guido is M.I.A. in Vietnam

Where, incidentally, Guido has discovered that the governing Communist Party is privatising the provision of state-funded education and cutting taxes on business. So Brown’s government has more Stalinist policies than the Vietnamese Communist Party…

No Guinness to be found however, ah well… Happy St Patricks!

Can the Irish Again Save Europe?

With the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century, it fell to us Irish, to our glory, to save Western Civilisation. It was Irish monks who copied and preserved almost all of Western classical poetry, history, oratory, philosophy and commentary. It was in the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells that, safely distant in the West and away from the barbarian despoliation of the European continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly even, preserved the West’s written treasury.

As Thomas Cahill records in How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland’s Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe “when stability returned in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning, becoming not only the conservators of civilization, but also the shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on Western culture.” Ireland became “Europe’s publisher” as warrior-monks followed Columcille’s example and began to colonise barbarised Europe.

Whereas once before in distant European history the Irish preserved documents to save Europe from barbarians, Ireland could now vote down a document and save Europe from the bureaucrats. Ireland, alone of all the nations of Europe, will hold a referendum on the Constitutional Treaty…

It is election day in Ireland today. The Green Party are expected to do well, in small part due to this rather good advert. The small Progressive Democrat party, according to some, is going to get wiped out. Guido

Croke Park, National Anthems, England v Ireland

Quote of the Day

Liz Kendall is asked by Tom Newton Dunn if she would ever ban the Sun from one of her press conferences:

“If you stripped naked and ran in front of me, Tom, I might have second thoughts about it, but apart from that, no.”
