Corbynomics guru Richard Murphy has taken a break from his new campaign to “say yes to the power of the state” to provide his wisdom on the latest gilt market meltdown on BBC Radio 2 today:
“This is not a crisis. I actually think this is a Musk moment. I think that Musk at the weekend called for people to bring down the UK government and city traders tend to be quite keen on Musk and I suspect they’re having a little game, seeing how much trouble they can cause for Rachel Reeves. I genuinely really rule out that possibility, that this is a coordinated attack on Labour out and it’s entirely possible that they can play such games.”
It is quite difficult to co-ordinate free markets. That’s the point…
Co-conspirators will remember when Guido revealed that Starmer’s close mate Philippe Sands KC is Mauritus’ chief legal adviser and represented the country in its campaign to secure sovereignty of the Chagos Islands. That explains the surrender deal…
During a talk in Cambridge last year Sands spoke of how great it was that he could be celebrated for defeating and ‘humiliating’ the UK in the UN’s courts:
“It’s a really fantastic thing about Britain that I think it’s probably the only country in the world where when you’ve been to an international court against your own country, won, and humiliated them completely, they still celebrate you and that is special.”
Sands who says Starmer is a “great friend,” has acted as counsel of Mauritius since 2010 and acted against Britain at three tribunals including the widely cited 2017 ICJ tribunal which was initiated by the UN General Assembly. All are advisory and non-binding. As Guido revealed yesterday the deal agreed by the UK government could prevent nuclear weapons from being stationed on Diego Garcia all while Trump’s team rages at its terms. It’s become Starmer and Sands against the rest…
The pressure is piling on Starmer to u-turn on a public inquiry on the rape gangs scandal. A comms mix-up saw Starmer’s spokesperson claim the Prime Minister was “open-minded” about an inquiry yesterday, only for Lammy this morning to state it’s been “ruled out.” Now Labour mayor Andy Burnham has weighed in saying he backs a national inquiry…
The King in the North is keeping up his campaign against the Labour leadership, telling BBC Radio Manchester: “I do think there is a case for limited national inquiry that draws on reviews like the one that I commissioned…[so] those who may have charges to answer are held to account”. Co-conspirators will remember that Andy is keen for “one last go” at a leadership bid “if a path opens up”. Seizing this latest opportunity to lay the groundwork…
Labour MP John McDonnell isn’t doing Starmer any favours in his attempts to make the party look serious about tackling rape gangs. Guido’s seen an email McDonnell circulated to all Labour MPs last night from a left-wing lawyer downplaying the scandal, describing the rape gangs as “alleged.” The email begins:
“I thought I would just drop you a quick note to assist with the debate today and the ongoing furore (Elon Musk, Mr Farage, and Ms Badenoch), regarding alleged grooming of girls by groups of men of Pakistani heritage.”
It then shifts the blame to the Tories:
“In simple terms, this is a problem caused by the Conservatives, who commissioned the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse and received its many reports, including the Organised Networks report and final report.”
A Tory source tells Guido:
“That a former Shadow Chancellor and one-time Labour leadership candidate is promoting loony lawyers who claim the grooming is “alleged” tells you all you need to know about Labour’s approach to this issue. Keir Starmer wants to sweep the rape gangs scandal under the carpet because the truth is too hard for Labour to confront. It is total and utter moral cowardice from a weak and spineless Prime Minister.”
McDonnell introduces the email with a note to say he “hopes” this “helpful” email will assist MPs “in responding to the appalling behaviour of the Conservatives and Reform.” Starmer will be praying his colleagues ignore the Corbynite’s advice…

RMT union general secretary Michael Lynch is retiring having been in the post since 2021 and over 30 years in the union. Lynch explained “it is time for change” though he’s proud to have been part of the “struggle” to fight for the union’s members. Good news for rail passengers, not so much for the left…

Speaking at his speech on how to achieve “progressive capitalism” Wes Streeting fired a dig and Andy Burnham:
“Bond markets are not bond villains and fiscal rules matter.”
