The party leaders had come in their most deceptive disguise – as amused, ironic, decent British civilians. With occasional flashes of feline tooth and claw, they conducted their business in a language we could all understand. We were included. We were part of a conversation that wasn’t for once bellowed in the alien dialect they use on these occasions – the bombast, the megalomania, the Manichean idiocies, the psychotic aggression attacking policies they had themselves proposed and defending policies they had themselves attacked.
