From time to time Guido checks in on how our new “progressively” controlled councils are getting along. This week it was the turn of Mid Sussex District Council, which is dominated by a large LibDem minority and governs with the help of the other “progressive coalition” parties – it kicked off a campaign to “buy nothing new.” An effort to “boycott Black Friday and the culture of impulse buys that goes along with it”…

That’ll be good for local businesses, won’t it? Before a few days had passed the council had got such a kicking on Facebook and other social media platforms that they cancelled the entire thing and deleted all the posts and tweets promoting it. The world is healing…
