The plan was cooked up by the New Economics Foundation while it was run by Fahnbulleh, who left in 2023. NEF’s National Energy Guarantee would give every household a free or heavily discounted block of energy to cover essentials like heating, cooking, lighting and washing, with use above that charged at a higher premium rate. The aim is to force higher costs onto high-use, wealthier households through a premium band. Extra allowances would go to households with unavoidably high needs, such as disabled residents and all-electric homes. Or no doubt, benefit claimants with ten children…
Fahnbulleh has privately indicated she backs the idea. The Treasury has briefed that some kind of targeted energy price relief is in the works for the colder incoming months. DESNZ will be pushing for its minister’s pet project…
