In a look-ahead to wacky events at the LibDem conference in Brighton, Guido was intrigued to see an anti-Christian panel discussion. No one tell Tim Farron…
Hosted by the Humanist and Secularist Liberal Democrats, it’s titled: “Anti-rights: the threat from Christian Nationalism and the far right.” The blurb:
“What is Christian Nationalism and how is it influencing politics in the UK? From anti-abortion campaigns, to attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, anti- rights movements are gaining ground and we must urgently respond. Our panellists, including Andrew Copson (Humanists UK), Chiara Capraro (Amnesty International) and Louise McCudden (MSI Reproductive Choices), will consider how we defend and promote human rights and liberal values.”
The LibDems only months ago admitted to illegal discrimination after former BBC journalist David Campanale was deselected as a PPC for his religious views. Activist charity Amnesty will also be in attendance. It recently had to apologise after it labelled 117 organisations, mostly innocuous Christian groups, as an “anti-rights” threat. Are the threatening ‘far right’ Christian groups in the room with us right now?
Lord Khan in the Telegraph: “I hope, and I say this in a non-pompous way, that the public service I do will bring rewards in this world and the hereafter,” he says. “I’m hoping the work I do is earning me Brownie points.”
