New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that inflation jumped to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% the month before. As expected by economists…
The jump was attributed to a rise in energy prices – especially gas costs – and increases in the price of furniture and clothing. John Healey said:
“Iran war inflation continues to impact prices here at home, but Britain’s economy is resilient. We have cut VAT on electricity bills and capped bus fares at £2 to give breathing space to those feeling the strain.”
Mel Stride said:
“Labour’s economic mismanagement has left us unprepared for global shocks, with the UK having the highest inflation in the G7 at the start of the Iran crisis. It is ordinary people who are left paying the price.”
Robert Jenrick said:
“Andy Burnham talks a big game but so far all his policies are doing is exploding people’s bills. The only way to cut the cost of living is to stop wasting money on foreign aid and benefits and spend it on working people instead. This Prime Minister seems just as unwilling as Keir Starmer to do that.”
That end-of-year upturn in inflation threatens to ruin Burnham’s plans…
Lord Khan in the Telegraph: “I hope, and I say this in a non-pompous way, that the public service I do will bring rewards in this world and the hereafter,” he says. “I’m hoping the work I do is earning me Brownie points.”
