New Director-General Matt Brittin has announced the first phase of cuts at the BBC:
- 550 net job cuts by the end of this financial year across the News, Nations and Content divisions, part of 2,000 job losses planned over the next three years.
- A further 700 job losses in the corporate division to be set out in the coming months.
- One in 10 senior managers to leave, with some compulsory redundancies. BBC News expected to be hit hardest.
- Programme closures, with only those of highest audience “value and impact” protected.
- Total cost savings of £160m by the end of this financial year, with the programmes and news commissioning budget cut by £80m in 2027-28.
- Channels and radio networks under review, with a possible merger of BBC Four into BBC Two.
- More investment in iPlayer and a stronger push on social media.
- One Today Programme presenter to be removed.
