Angela Rayner has appeared on the Today programme this morning after news that Greater Manchester Police are reassessing the case of her potential electoral roll fraud. Nick Robinson made an obvious point about tax: Why not publish the expert tax advice for everybody to make their own mind up if you’ve done nothing wrong? Rayner couldn’t give a straight answer.
Rayner was asked four times why she won’t publish the single document, which she says she obtained recently, explaining that she has done nothing wrong. Her line was that she is not “going to put out all of my personal details for the last 15 years“. Which no one, as Robinson points out, has asked her to do.
“Unless I’m accused of being a liar“, she says – which her neighbours do. Robinson makes clear: “You wouldn’t accept that from a Conservative minister, you’d say publish“. Instead she’s keeping the basis of her defence secret. Starmer says he hasn’t seen it. What is Rayner afraid of?
