Public health PUSS (parliamentary under-secretary of state) Jane Ellison egg-turned in just a few hours yesterday. Here she was answering this written question from Labour yesterday afternoon:

Jim Shannon: “To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make it his policy to introduce plain packaging for tobacco products as a matter of urgency.”

Jane Ellison: “The Government is actively considering this policy.”

Just a few hours later and that “active considering” was over. Ellison was up again:

“We are going to take the opportunity to put regulations in place which will enable us to act quickly.”

She said through clenched teeth…
