International Women’s Day: Political History for Ingénues

To read some of the tweets from Labour politicians today you would think that is was their party that led the emancipation of women. Younger readers may be unaware of the political history.  All of the above listed in that 1979 election poster culminated in this:

Worth taking a look at a new website launching today

Happy International Women’s Day!

What exactly has Harman done in Parliament. Made herself noticed. Complained. Policy that has delivered improvement, for all, for anyone?

          • This Century says:

Exactly. She’s a non-achieving political dinosaur – a fake along with a number of other fakers who like to pretend they are ‘fighting’ for womens’ equality: something which was achieved a long time ago. She realy just hates men.

          • Dynasty watch says:

Her greatest achievement to date has been to ensure her husband was handed a safe labour seat on an all woman shortlist. However shes not finished yet as her crowning glory will be to ensconce her children in similar seats around the country.

Labours default position on child abuse appears to be hypocrisy.

H arman and Dr0mey should be investigated and criminal charges brought.

Their “heartfelt” Apologies which are still not forthcoming are not wanted, they can save those for the judge to consider in mitigation when they are being sentenced.

We don’t want apologies, we want a bl00dy court case and justice.

          Maqboul says:

I figure money management isn’t your strong point.

          • Vlad the Loudhailer says:

Gordon Brown inspired Wonga, they watched as he spent money he hadn’t got and had no idea of the interest accruing or how it would be paid back.
Now the Money Moron is flying around the world lecturing on “Prudence”.

Obviously Labour defy the laws of physics as the thickest float to the top.

          • Mine d'Boggles says:

Vlad – brilliant I had never heard that before …. “the thickest float to the top”. Surely an epitaph for this Parliament.

          • Lady Virginia Droit de Seigneur says:

The Labour Party is like a sewage tank – the biggest chunks rise to the top.

It wasn’t just the way they’d hit me £25 for going 5p over that used to nauseate, it was the way they sent stuff on recycled paper about their ethical policy towards dolphins in the same envelope.

*Though not for much longer, possibly.

And if and when the Lefties close Wonga down, organised crime will supply the same service at a cost in human suffering far in excess of Wonga. Get real.

        Lefties can’t think beyond tomorrow.

      • 83
        This Century says:

The position is more complicated than that. Prosecutions of loan sharks are actually quite rare, but one I am aware of was charging about 240%: a swinging amount you might think, but actually a twentieth of the rate that Wonga and similar firms charge.

        • 147
          carlo gambino says:

I remember a report on the arrest of a glasgow loan shark about twenty years ago.

From one of his books he took an income of £90,000 (untaxed and cash) in one year. He never had more than £2,500 out on loan at any one time. And he had several ‘books’.

Mention that to any twot who believes loan sharks provide a service.

        Twampersand mk III says:

I hate lefties and despise Labour, but having lived under Thatcher and having seen the suffering she caused, mostly out of political spite and personal arrogance, I am forced to conclude the was an utter cow and her policies created the division of the nation that we still see today, the same policies which created the resentment amongst the electorate that saw that other bastard, Bliar, elected.

….Also, maggie abolished tied cottages,so I re trained at a skillcentre, and bought the tied cottage, though interest rates were high!

          • Twampersand mk III says:

Well done and may you continue to prosper.

Out of a population of 50 odd million at the time, there are millions that prospered, I don’t deny that. But there were millions that didn’t, and as I said in the above comment, she split the nation, basically abandoning the North, literally destroying communities that were prosperous previously, motivated, imho, by political spite and a supreme arrogance.

Having said all that, I dread to think what would have happened had Kinnock got in.

          • Anonymong says:

            “basically abandoning the North”

By no longer subsidising industries that were not prepared to work more effectively against foreign competition.

I wouldn’t have invested in companies making rubbish, delivered late and at a cost way above the going rate.

Labour isn’t working. It don’t know how to work. It still doesn’t.

Typical leftie. Bigoted and oozing prejudice.

          • Twampersand mk III says:

I’m not a lefty, nor am I thick. You must be though, if you think those that think Thatcher was a cow are by default lefties.

I have voted Labour, once, when I was 18 and didn’t know better. On all other occasions I have voted Tory up until the last time I voted, the 1997 GE, where I again voted Tory. After that time I have spoiled my paper, to ensure that I cannot be accused of not participating. Communism is shit, it doesn’t work, but capitalism appears to me to be shit too, although the version we have in the UK is not really capitalism, it’s croneyism and graft, funny handshakes and back-handers.

          • Edna in Clapham says:

            Profuse apologies sir/madam.

          • one votes ukip says:

The trouble with lefties, and Twampersand mk III, is that they never say what reasonable thing Thatcher could have done that she did not do.

Note: Throwing money at companies such as British Leyland to produce shite products that no one wants to buy, thus making year on year losses,
is not a reasonable thing to do.

And you lot just wanted to hear “spend more”!.. No point denying it. I read these pages. On the one hand you say “ohh! End foreign aid!”. Then you say “Don’t cut the military. Or don’t sell the royal mail. Or don’t cut libraries. Or Litter bin funds or dog poo wardens or whatever dumb idea your local authority has had…You won’t let me cut anything or raise any taxes and you want me to spend more on your pet ideas. You won’t even let me start fracking..I don’t know..I even had to have the lemons tagging along as you all got very scared in 2010 when i mentioned we might have to make some cuts and you all ran back to Uncle Gordon the giver. Even though you knew he was the worst prime minister in history.

In retaliation, the students boycotted university catering outlets, forcing them out of business. Increased profits on the business in the Student Union-run outlets more than made up for the cost of the fine.

To be fair to Labour on the issue of female leaders, the calibre of their female MPs isn’t exactly impressive. Look at the acting leaders they’ve had in the wake of John Smith’s death and Gordon Brown cowardly walking away after being kicked out: Margaret Beckett and Harman respectively. And then we had Diane Abbott standing in the last contest. Gisela Stuart is one of the few who has some intellect but is hardly leader material. Rob Colvile reviews Russell Brand’s new book:

“Oddly, the person I feel sorriest for isn’t Brand himself – although he certainly comes across as a rather pitiable figure, projecting his own brokenness on to the world around him – but Johann Hari. Drummed out of Fleet Street for plagiarism, the former Independent columnist has washed up as “my mate Johann, who’s been doing research for this book”. For a genuinely talented polemicist, it would have been a humbling experience to have to treat this sub-undergraduate dross as the scintillating wisdom of a philosopher-king.”

Mycroft says:

Have you read the last bit of Animal Farm?

You know where the animals are looking through the Farmhouse window?

My TV screen was that window at lunch-time today.

Be careful, the sudden self-congratulatory tone, the slightly pudgy outline of indulgence and you become exactly what you should despise.

The jolly face of the Quisling Cameron poses for your camera has mesmerised and deceived you, you who were once not so deceived.

You were no firebrand, you were a damp squib in my opinion, sorry.

You need a damned good kick up the ahse!
