Fair point. It is tragic but to assign blame to the dj’s is too much of a jump.

  21. 21
    Engineer says:

Now you know why boring old farts like us call such things ‘stupid pranks’. That poor receptionist’s (or nurse’s) last 24 hours on this planet must have been truly awful. As others have said, the BBC haven’t helped by constantly repeating the call, but the bulk of the blame lies with two brainless morons calling themselves Australian DJs.

    Farmer says:

As the Leveson inquiry revealed, the media has an uncontrolled power to reach into a persons’ life and make it intolerable.

In a small way, many years ago it happened to me and my family. We had done nothing wrong or even been accused of anything but there was a ‘public interest’ and it tore our lives apart for years.

For people without media training and who have no public role in life I believe that the media (newspapers, radio, TV) owes a duty of care.

The girl, who had been brought on to undergo a lie detector test about her mother’s concerns about her drug and sex experience, told Kyle Sandilands before the questions started: “I’m scared … it’s not fair.””

    Patten must Go NOW says:

Yes but the BBC had made it far worse for her. All her friends, workmates, family, the whole country infact would have heard the conversation and she knew it. They could simply have reported what happened without constantly broadcasting the conversation, which turned her from a mystery nurse/receptionist into an identifiable person. To make matters worse the BBC seemed to treat it as a joke, not the aussie DJ’s but the staff at a top private hospital who gave out confidential details was what the BBC thought funny.

No she was a victim of a fraud. They were using her for their own personal gain.

Blagging is thought of, by the press, as a wheeze. It is also supported by the government as they use institutional blagging. For example a government agency uses false legal arguments to force people to disclose information.

It is as though all laws are being ignored when the victim is an individual, yet when an institution (BBC) is threatened the laws seem to be resurrected. This is our experience with another agency that can ignore all the laws it likes, as the victims are individuals and not around to fight back.

The call was malicious, they had no interest in the effect on others either of the patient or the people who they misled and could have lost their jobs because of it.

The radio station seems to have had warnings from the Australian authorities previously but no serious action was taken against them.

  58. 58
    Earl of Croydon says:

Oh come along. As they said it was clearly a bit of harmless fun. It was also a rotten impression of the Queen for which they never in a million years expected to be put through.
These types of calls have been happening since the advent of the phone.
Its awful that she has taken her own life, shocking, but there can be no accounting for the instability of some people.
Life cannot be spent walking on eggshells.

  59. 59
    nadia says:

the prank was witless and unfunny. the constant repetition of it and general media frenzy was worse. and to what end? to prove that security is lax? that someone was duped and wasn’t a jobsworth for a f#cking change?

in the old days you could phone up to check on relatives. these days there’d be no point, data protection, ‘more than my jobs worth’ etc. that some poor nurse acted like a human instead of a f#cking computer gets driven to suicide. she may or may not have been unstable anyway. i bet there’s a significant proportion of the population that would be mortified to even be mentioned on television, let alone hounded and made to look a fool. of course that isn’t understood by the media whores and self-obsessed streaks of piss that endlessley repeated this (you newsreading c#nts and editors know who you are).

    this has genuinely upset me.

    Hard to blame the DJ’s.

    Blame rests instead with the media on two-fronts;

    1. For getting hysterical that some rich privileged fella spunked into another rich privileged tart and made another rich privileged thing.
    2. for branding a simple prank as “traitorous” and blowing it all out of proportion.

The prankster are the least culpable in this.

Those two talentless c-unts will now spend the rest of their days with that on their conscience, and flipping burgers for a living.

  76. 76
    WastedJoker says:

And the prank would not have been worthwhile if the media over here weren’t in such a retarded frenzy.

Don’t try to twist simple facts.

If those two brainless morons hadn’t played their stupid prank, no trajedy would have occurred. There would have been no story to broadcast. Those DJs are the cause of the problems, and are indirectly responsible for an innocent person taking her own life by deliberately deceiving her. The media didn’t help matters by broadcasting the call, but had there been no call, there would have been nothing to broadcast.

    @MB.
But that’s not malicious. Inconsiderate, yes, but not malicious. They didn’t intend any harm, they were trying to be entertaining.

It was malicious, they had no concerns about the consequences of their actions. At the very least some of the people at the hospital could have lost their jobs (the hospital have actually been supported of those individuals). It could have also caused distress (or worse) to a pregnant sick woman (the fact she is a Royal is irrelevant).

The radio station seems particularly incompetent, they are still playing a trailer bragging about the stunt. It is obviously early in the morning but I would have expected the management to get all their staff out of bed and into work to remove any reference to it but perhaps they are still proud of their actions.

Two DJ’s….a dumb blonde and a spikey-haired little shitbag. Immature, childish behaviour, so maybe it was a prank, BUT recording the whole thing? The nurse must have suffered such anguish when she heard it played back. What went through her head? Fear of job loss? Ridicule from others? “She was the one who got fooled by a couple of Ozzies pretending to be royalty”, etc etc……you can just imagine it.
You don’t have to be oversensitive to suffer…..how would you feel if someone recorded your sex antics in bed and then played them to all and sundry at the local pub? You’d feel a complete idiot…..and that’s just how this nurse felt.

This might have been a prank but it has backfired with awful consequences. The two DJs will now have to live with the memory of this for the rest of their lives…..and serve em right. A worthy punishment.

Somewhere between the word Royal and the word Baby, it seems mass hysteria broke out.

Boris on British Jihadis. Apparently based on MI5 intel:

“If you look at all the psychological profiling about bombers, they typically will look at porn. They are literally w***ers. Severe onanists. They are tortured. They will be very badly adjusted in their relations with women, and that is a symptom of their feeling of being failures and that the world is against them. They are not making it with girls, and so they turn to other forms of spiritual comfort — which of course is no comfort.”
