Agreed. They didn’t act with malicious intent, and media coverage and other unknown factors may well have played a part as well.
The call was malicious, they had no interest in the effect on others either of the patient or the people who they misled and could have lost their jobs because of it.
The radio station seems to have had warnings from the Australian authorities previously but no serious action was taken against them.

It was malicious, they had no concerns about the consequences of their actions. At the very least some of the people at the hospital could have lost their jobs (the hospital have actually been supported of those individuals). It could have also caused distress (or worse) to a pregnant sick woman (the fact she is a Royal is irrelevant).
The radio station seems particularly incompetent, they are still playing a trailer bragging about the stunt. It is obviously early in the morning but I would have expected the management to get all their staff out of bed and into work to remove any reference to it but perhaps they are still proud of their actions.
No she was a victim of a fraud. They were using her for their own personal gain.
Blagging is thought of, by the press, as a wheeze. It is also supported by the government as they use institutional blagging. For example a government agency uses false legal arguments to force people to disclose information.
It is as though all laws are being ignored when the victim is an individual, yet when an institution (BBC) is threatened the laws seem to be resurrected. This is our experience with another agency that can ignore all the laws it likes, as the victims are individuals and not around to fight back.

As others have said, the BBC haven’t helped by constantly repeating the call, but the bulk of the blame lies with two brainless morons calling themselves Australian DJs.

Yes but the BBC had made it far worse for her. All her friends, workmates, family, the whole country infact would have heard the conversation and she knew it. They could simply have reported what happened without constantly broadcasting the conversation, which turned her from a mystery nurse/receptionist into an identifiable person. To make matters worse the BBC seemed to treat it as a joke, not the aussie DJ’s but the staff at a top private hospital who gave out confidential details was what the BBC thought funny.
And no other TV or radio channel broadcast it?

What BBC station are you listening to? I have not heard them constantly playing it. They played some heavily edited clips earlier in the week but not heard it since then.
BBC Radio 4. They played the (edited) clip on just about every news bulletin I heard on Tuesday and Wednesday. They (quite correctly) didn’t play the clip on Friday evening, when arguably it had even more news value.

As the Leveson inquiry revealed, the media has an uncontrolled power to reach into a persons’ life and make it intolerable.
In a small way, many years ago it happened to me and my family. We had done nothing wrong or even been accused of anything but there was a ‘public interest’ and it tore our lives apart for years.
For people without media training and who have no public role in life I believe that the media (newspapers, radio, TV) owes a duty of care.
Don’t worry, Farmer, the BBc have rules which don’t allow this sort of thing to prevail.

Those DJs are the cause of the problems, and are indirectly responsible for an innocent person taking her own life by deliberately deceiving her. The media didn’t help matters by broadcasting the call, but had there been no call, there would have been nothing to broadcast.
And if the media hadn’t reacted to a pregnancy like it was the second coming there’d have been no way a prank would’ve happened.
Then when it did the media reacted like a bunch of idiots, branding the aussies traitorous et al.

The nurse must have suffered such anguish when she heard it played back. What went through her head? Fear of job loss? Ridicule from others? “She was the one who got fooled by a couple of Ozzies pretending to be royalty”, etc etc……you can just imagine it.
You don’t have to be oversensitive to suffer…..how would you feel if someone recorded your sex antics in bed and then played them to all and sundry at the local pub? You’d feel a complete idiot…..and that’s just how this nurse felt.
This might have been a prank but it has backfired with awful consequences. The two DJs will now have to live with the memory of this for the rest of their lives…..and serve em right. A worthy punishment.

What makes all this worse is that it was pre-recorded then signed off by the stations lawyers who failed to realise that it is still a criminal offence to impersonate queen.
