Compare and Contrast: Candidates Effective Tax Rates

Ken has released information on the income that he decided to pay tax on, while simply choosing to ignore the rest. When Silveta Ltd’s numbers from all of his media earnings are included, the true picture of his company wheeze becomes clear. If the Silveta Ltd had actually done anything Ken might have had a leg to stand on, but it did nothing in that time bar employ his wife to write a book. He’s a tax avoider…

I can see £34,661 tax paid but I can see only £94,568 income can I ask where is £238,646 coming from?

If £238,646 income is company income we also need to look at company expense. If you take the same logic and look at our FTSE 100 companies they would not have paid even 0.01% tax.

£238.646 was paid into Ken’s company. Apart from paying Mrs Ken to write a book, there was no business put through the company. Therefore it can be safely assumed that the company is a front to launder Ken’s earnings so that he pays less tax – which is shown by the bar-chart. What Ken has done is not illegal, however bearing in mind Ken’s statements about the necessity for all to pay their due tax, it is both immoral and hypocritical. Is that simple enough for you to understand?

          • Anonymous says:

What about the other 2 staff Ken says he employ?

Don’t you think £250,000 Telegraph pays Boris is the same premier league amount Cameron wants for access?

Is Telegraph paying similar figure to others? If you base it on time spent even Telegraph editor will not get the same amount. Say Boris writes 10 telegraph column a year, he claims it takes 1/2 hour, will any one pay him £50,000 an hour?

          • so your argument is now nothing to do with tax avoidance.

            - Ken employs some staffers to work on his political campaign – GOOD

            - Boris earns more than Ken – Bad
            Boris is rich -BAD
Cameron could be taking money for dinner and access -BAD.

So why is HMRC not doing any thing? There is enough publicity someone in HMRC would have read about it months ago.

          • Lord Kinnock of Wind-Baggery! says:

Maybe HMRC are looking into Ken’s tax avoidance scheme..my point is can Ken be trusted to tell us if tbey are? Trust funds are perfectly legal ways of mitigating potential tax liabilities. As is using a company, it’s Ken’s brass neck hypocracy in not admitting that he’s avoiding tax that’s at the core of it. He has a deep character flaw and he’s not being honest with us or himself.

      Angry of London says:

      To all who are interested:

Emma Beal is a 50:50 shareholder with Ken. On 26/6/2008 Ken increased the number of shares in VATLIES ltd from 1 to 2. The second share was given to Ms Beal.

Note Companies House Webcheck entries (explanations in square brackets after each entry) :

Document 88(2) [change of share allocation]
      26/06/2008 [date of document filing]
AD 17/06/08 [date of share transfer]
GBP SI 1@1=1 [increase in total share value of £1]
GBP IC 1/2 [increase of total share number from 1 to 2]

The downloaded document shows clearly on the last page that the new share (half of the 2 shares in the company) was allocated to Ms Emma Mary Beal of 52 Ivy Road Crickelwood.

Dividends are paid per share. So, whatever Ken got, Emma got the same. Could anyone honestly argue that she earned that money through VATLIES Ltd? No. Ken is doubling his tax-free dividend take by passing half of it through Emma. After that, I would imagine it finds its way direct to a current account.

Guido – Ken is paying much less than 14% tax. Count on it.

      • 95

If you “earn” less than £5k, how much NI do you pay anyway?
Certainly very odd to earn pretty much nothing, and have all your money in dividends.

      • 100
        Accountant says:

There is a threshold for paying NI contributions. Single person companies normally pay themselves below this threshold about £360 a month to avoid NI contributions, if they wish to take any other money out of the company they take it as dividends, which is not aggregated with the income for NI contributions. Dividends also attract less tax than the advertised rates of income tax, and if you pay tax at the standard rate they are tax free. How do I know this? Cos I have been doing it for years.

        • 104
          Accountant says:

I forgot to add that if you pay yourself below the NI threshold, the Government pays your entire NI contributions for you, this is exactly what is happening to Ken. Other candidates made no such accusations of those who avoid, and had they avoided no charge of hypocrisy could be laid against them. Happily it turns out that they don’t avoid and in fact Boris pays enough tax to keep 7 unemployed families in benefits.
