A Very European Coup

Papandreou is said to be on his way to meet Greek President Karolos Papoulios to offer his resignation.

Greece will apparently get an emergency coalition government.

Knifed for daring to give the people a say…

It is utterly Stalinistic and utterly totalitarian. If the Greeks are now being given any choice at all, it is accept utter and complete submission of the last vestige of your Sovereignty to Brussels, or get out of the EU.

Given that choice I would look to Iceland’s example, and get the fuck out of the EU altogether.

This looked like a slight possibility, so they have been fucked over to the extent that they are going to have ALL choices taken from them from now on!

We are seeing the utter humiliation and destruction of a Nation State before our very eyes. A nation destroyed by the corrupt traitorous scum inside and outside their own borders.

They claim that to leave the Economic and Monitory Union requires the withdrawal from the EU itself. We are not in the single currency, can we withdraw from the utterly, totally anti-democratic Evil Union now then? Please?

The ONLY party speaking truth to power at the moment is UKIP. FUCK the EU!

I think it is absolutely frightening that fanatic political ideology is witnessing the destruction of a nation state because they want to be independent. Hitler was labelled as mad, but these people are far beyond his mad plans for GERMANY TO RULE EUROPE.

We need everyone to write to their MPs blog, twitter etc. The UK needs to get out the EU ASAP. Fanatical Clegg will do everything he can to get the UK to be part of the EU state.

Clegg wrote that “all nations have a cross to bear, and none more so than Germany with its memories of Nazism. But the British cross is more insidious still. A misplaced sense of superiority, sustained by delusions of grandeur and a tenacious obsession with the last war, is much harder to shake off”.[38][39] The article was dusted down during the 2010 General Election campaign when the Daily Mail interpreted the article as being a “Nazi slur on Britain” . He will use any language, threat or fear to reach his aim.

Historically, before there is any major move down in the world’s stock markets, they are led down by what seems like an insignificant Stock Market. In the past this has been markets as diverse as Finland and Korea. This time it is the Greek Stock market which has already fallen by 90% of it’s value. You have been warned!

p.s. Any Sovereign default will bring down many of the world’s banks as credit default swaps will be triggered and these are underwritten by banks. The politicians know this, that is why they are all shitting themselves. The world stands on the edge of a debt precipice and is about to jump off.

Personally, I can’t get quite as worked up as many about the Greeks. They have helped themselves to a far higher standard of living than they have earned and now that the day of reckoning has come they are basically stuck. If they were not a euro nation, they wouldn’t have lots of people chasing around trying to bail them out- they would just have to sink or adjust to the reality of their economic strength.
We in this country are having to make some attempt to realise our weakness, and they, even weaker, will have to do the same.
I suspect most Greeks, far from being heroic, would rather become a client state of Franco-Germany than accept the true state of their economy.

If you disagree and wish to be cast into economic darkness for a thousand years and be held responsible for the start of WW 3 – VOTE NO”

The lights are going out all over Europe.... and nobody has a "bob" for the meter... says:

The fact is that Papandreou may have thought he had struck a deal but he didn’t have a mandate from his electorate to implement the necessary conditions and any further attempts would see yet more riots on the streets of Athens. He therefore had no choice but to ask the people either by referendum or by election.

The greek opposition is totally against the agreement(how therefore can Greece have a government of national unity as proposed ?) and has already said to the Greek electorate that they would attempt to renegotiate the package if they were in government to more favourable terms(they wouldn’t be successful and are living in cloud cuckoo land). The Germans who are driving this(being the paymasters)told the Greek Government that a referendum on the package is not an option as far as they are concerened and the only thing Greece should decide on is whether they come out not just the Euro now but the EU.Sarkozy is cacking his pants over Greek default as it will effect French Banks. Meanwhile Italy(again with a weak dysfunctional goverenmet) whose Banks have the biggest exposure to greek debt is teetering on the brink of the abyss along with Greece.

The EU Constitution does not allow a country to withdraw from the Euro and remain within the EU. This will require a new treaty not just sanctioned by the 17(16 after Greece is kicked out of the eurozone) but of all the 27 memebers inc the UK.

Cameron has nowhere to hide any longer….he will have to concede a referendum on UK ,membership certainly within the next 6 months .Dissent is building on the Tory backbenches(there are already problems as evidenced by to-day’s urgent question put down in Parliament over the UK giving monies to the eurozone by the backdoor route of the IMF).Dissent will grow in the country fuelled by the largely eurosceptic press….UK policy is re-aligning and not even Clegg will be able to stop it…..this is a risky time not just for governments in the eurozone but here in the uk as well

    • 104

Papanderou has consistently been working through the Greek parliament since May to amend their laws so as to make a referendum possible. The Greek parliament voted 30 days enabling legislation that would be needed for a referendum to go ahead.

      1) Either the EU has such complete disregard for Parliamentary democracy that it did not actually follow events in the Greek parliament.

      2) Merkozy and the EU knew that this was likely and strung Papaderou along (give him enough rope etc).

There is no way Greek society will hold with the current cuts by a Government without any mandate (or majority) or major reopression EU style.

He had no choice but to out it to the people. He agreed certainly didnt go back on on merely said that was the deal agreed but for it to work it would need popular mandate. I think events show that there woud have been no chance that Merkosy would have agreed any deal if there had been a hint of a referendum.

Time for the Major’s, Colonel’s, Brigadier’s and General’s to don the flak jacket and get out there for the coup.

One can’t blame Papandreou, he’s hated, like all politicians in Greece, for continuing the ole regime of corruption, backhanders and poor service, which the taxpayers reciprocate by not paying taxes, for allowing the myth that Greece is economically sound to fester and for the government to spend and waste billions. Did they really have to do the Olympics, such a waste of loot which everyone now has to pay for.

Mind you, Greeks arn’t totally stupid, they’re not Turkeys, they realise that the current straitened lifestyle is infinitely more desirable than living in a backward, bankrupt state which all will shun for years, cheap hollys or not.

I would suggest that the Bondholders seize sellable assets, the islands for one, evict the natives and flog ‘em orff to the highest bidders.
Banks might like one if it comes with a licence as a tax haven, which would up the price.
Oligarchs and billionaires might like the idea of their own private state free from interference.

To end some, classical alliteration:= Socialist MEP called Anni Podimata, argued that a referendum would bring catharsis. It’s a good metaphor. Catharsis is the purification and emotional renewal that comes at the end of a Greek tragedy. Greece has been through the hubris – the boom years, when the markets pretended that Greek and German debt were interchangeable – and is now suffering the nemesis.

        Honest View says:

I wonder how you would feel if you were a German and had not only to have spent billions on rescuing East Germany and bringing it roughly into line with the West, and then found that all Southern Europe was waiting with the begging bowl.
It’s all very well to chortle about the panzers rolling, but essentially the Germans deserve some say as the most resilient European economy, now being strangled by all the hangers-on. Their great plan, in alliance with France, to change European history from constant rivalry and war, is unravelling. Idealism usually ends up defeated by reality.

I heard that the English Democrats were prepared to burn an EU flag on november the 5th. Couldn’t be better timing if true.

It’s truly a Berlin Wall moment I think. I’m referring to the 1961 moment of course, when the bastards put it up.

    CHRIST ON A BIKE! says:

Oh! give over Guido! This wasn’t about “giving people a say” it was about holding a gun to the head of the EU to get more money and more favourable deal for Greece (and robbing everyone else). And most likely Papandreou and his cabiniet colleagues have just taken a big bribe from the EU to bugger-off, no doubt to some nice off-shore haven.
I suspect that Papandreou and his cohorts have been planning to resign for quite a while ( I mean, would you want be in charge of Greece with what was about to be imposed on them?) this was a way of saving face with the Greek people and claiming tobe on their side, whilst most likely getting a fat golden “sod-off please” handshake from Brussels!

Sir Keith Josephs Preserved Head says:

The thing about “giving the people a say” is wrong.

Politicians tend to only hold a referendum they think they will win ( we know that)

It’s through the looking glass logic . An anti universe

For Papandreou a “win” WAS a “no” vote!

    He wanted to “lose” !

Then he could go back and demand Greece be totally let off!

    WTF says:

Fuck Greece. Fuck them side-ways with a cricket bat. They lied massively to get into the EU. They should be caste adrift like the denial-ist, lying, non-tax paying bludging twats that they are. Fuck them. They should have been caste adrift months ago.

BTW: Who the fuck rubber stamped their entry in the EU!?

Mr Bryant and Mr Watson managing to make the whole hacking affair look like a farce – the more they moan the less I care about the whole subject! So partisan it beggars belief at all costs. They cannot rise above it ! If I was to call the PM a ‘liar’ I would want to be VERY sure.
