@Bill – regarding tax credits and their Ponzi type characteristics; yeah, kind of but a similar system does need to operate and whilst CTC is badly designed and quite able to be defrauded, it also does exactly the right job for many mothers. I should declare a bit of an interest as I work there but for every 10 calls at least 3 are proper genuine and it is government work. To tar applicability for Tax Credits with the volume and inspection of calls is not the same as saying the system itself is FUBAR. There is a movement towards increasing the compliance department but it can’t just be switched off without a manifesto pledge – that would be eggregious pedantry and quite expensive. It is getting reduced and HMRC is an odd place but, from my experience anyway, it seems rather target driven. The computer systems were fucked up in procurement but nowhere near as bad as the NHS but hovering about the billion squids.
All for getting shut of tax credits but not before an alternative has been sorted.

In Mosley’s case, I have a grain of sympathy for his stand. As far as I’m aware, he never really courted publicity in the way that celebs tend to, and never made public pronouncements about family life or sexual morality. Consequently, it’s rather hard to see what the public interest is in publishing details of his private life – it seems to be more prurience than exposure of hypocricy.
That said, I’m not too sure that his funding of the anti-News International legal campaign is wise. He’d be better advised fighting his own case (which seems a fair one) and staying out of those involving celebs and politicians, some of which are a tad hypocritical. He risks tainting himself with their hypocricy.
Furthermore, anybody making common cause with John Prescott is probably setting themselves up for severe embarrassment. The man’s incapable of rational thought.

Had a mull over Eric Pickles announcement re weekly bin collections and what green groups had to say , I will admitt that he is right it is one of the most visible things we associate with our local council , and it may help some other aspects of waste , I dont know if had seen a new design of sorting facility , though where instead of multiple bins it all goes into one and gets sorted on site . As ever in waste management we should be looking to be able to reuse as much of our waste as possible and one hopes that the supply side of waste will be more determined to help this , mainly because we are running low on landfill.
I have been in favour of plants that slow landfill down or even dig out our old ones and perhaps any areas that are still hooked on landfill , could do with these new plants which may have a better ecnomic contribution .
Still doubtfull on syn gas plants , as i think high temp incineration is way forward , or at least staged , but even then the residues need careful thought.
Planning : I dont think the 7% figure of built land area is a fair one to use ,for quite a bit of the Uk would be very difficult to build and live on , besides we are talking about land that really could be used to grow stuff on , rather than a few highland grazers . Given the use of biofuels or even biolubricants , green land for agriculture is under pressure any way , if we want less stressfull farming , we need to stress the land less , no one has mentioned how self sufficent we are in feedstocks for agriculture , we im port a lot of soya , which is causing deforestation in other parts of the world . if meat prices are dependent upon feedstocks , then seems a bit nuts not consider ,1 in 10 yr crop problems effects .
