Order of the OTT – “Free Schools Will Cause Riots”

Along with Alastair Campbell’s partner Fiona Millar, Francis Gilbert is the co-founder of the Local Schools Network – an anti academy front group set up to try to derail school reform. Paul Goodman over at ConservativeHome is a real fan. This morning Gilbert took to BBC Breakfast in a last ditch effort to talk down the Free School project that is seeing the first batch opening their doors this week:
FG: You’ll get a certain type of middle class parent putting their child into this school and then the local state school will take the more socially deprived pupils who don’t have the savvy parents. So you get this kind of segregation which has led to things like the London riots in our schools already…
BBC: Let me just stop you there. You’re saying segregation in education in London schools led to the London riots..?
FG: It contributed a certain factor because you’ve got the poorest students concentrated in a quarter of our schools in this country and that’s a real problem. So we really need to solve that by bringing all our children together and this free schools programme will contribute more to this social segregation.
No doubt he is fully signed up to the non-reality based community theory that the riots were caused by teenagers having their Educational Maintainence Allowance cut…

two in an hour Guido?
Looney left OTT remarks i mean.
What a judge of character Millar is. If she likes living with a drunken nutter good luck to her. A second rate press secretary is who is given air time by the lefty BBC. Hopefully Campbell will be giving evidence again with Blair when the true facts come out about Blair’s involvement with Libya.
and how presided over this segration… for last 13 years…
labour – so they to blame for the riots ?????
or does this not follow.
Now remind me who was education minister while most of these rioting types were at attending school
Would that be Ed Balls
Everything New Labour touches turns to dust
Francis Gilbert lacks consistency
He has written a bible for pushy middle class parents like himself – “Parent Power”
“Getting your child into a good school……”
http://www.francisgilbert.co.uk/2008/04/parent-power/
Will he get 4 years for incitement to riot?
A similar line was followed by an NUT hack on BBC Points West this lunchtime, almost word for word.
Surely the logic of his argument is that EVERY child goes to the same massive school?
Otherwise, if there are different schools there will be different standards and – ergo – riots?
Or is he actually advocating levelling all schools down to the crappest level?
Yes
The dogmatic fool is being interviewed on BBC 24 even as we speak.
Or maybe he is thinking of one massive state run “Education camp”?
Like the Socialist Party island camp for young people in Norway?
State run schools are already at rock bottom. Fiddling exam results was the only option left to give the pretext improvement was/is being made. Get rid of local authorities and start again with CEOs pay capped at £100,000. Still too many overpaid CEOs, director of services etc and they still want to close libraries. Pickles, get off your fat arse and do something about the number of LAs and cap salaries before we lose every local service or pay for it twice ie community charge and the n the service when used- as we already are for waste management.
This is how the BBC/Labour wants the young to be educated.
No questioning authority, dumbing everything down all at vastly inflated cost.
Obedience will be total – you will not know anything different – do as you are told, it’s all laid on.
Now pay your fee or Inspector Knacker will call.
That is all.
BBC Asian network – proving our equality credentials at your expense.
Of course, as advocated by Wedgewood-Benn and other illuminai of the chattering classes over the years. Prizes for all , we don’t need no education etc etc.
“Or is he actually advocating levelling all schools down to the crappest level?”
Yes, That’s why Alistair Campbell calls them bog standard comprehensives.
Our Denry, didn’t Guido go to a bog standard comp
Guido, could you or the Fabulous Guy News Team , can yo Do a fact check to find out how many book stores were attacked in the riots and if so, what was taken?
Books iz like old skool innit – weez robbed kinduls n shit cos day gonna fech much more down @ crack converter
Oh, yeah – and I woz riotin… er… protesting cos of chewishon fees and shit innit
I iz da viktim right?
Blair’s socialism where it pays not to work. 370,000 households where NO family member of 16yrs and above has ever worked.
Mass immigration where asylum seekers and immigrants are being paid more than pensioners at the expense of the taxpayer ie £106 weekly allowance against £250 for immigrants. £25 spouse allowance compared to £250 for immigrants/asylum seekers. Elderly forced to sell their houses to live in care homes, immigrants/asylum seekers provided a fully furnished house for free, some at the cost of £8,000 per month. Why can’t it be a loan like university students have to suffer to pay back the rest of their lives??
Education, education, education. Billions spent on welfare lifers’ retarded kids (with every sort of syndrome) who disrupt school for ordinary children from working homes. Fiddle exam rsults to portray a different picture of success- Blair’s deceit for you as he and Harman send their kids to the Oratory rather than the local septic pit. Clegg and Cable will continue to pursue the policy of remedial education on Blair and Brown’s behalf.
World Health Service (formerly known as NHS) continues, where everyone from the third world or Eastern Europe is provided free health care on the UK taxpayer. UK citizens can wait for up to a year to get treatment or pay to go privately for a service they already paid for by their taxes.
Energy prices soar because Blair did not have a plan, don’t worry socialist Huhne is at the helm. Your energy will be 32% more expensive because of Lie Dumbs green agenda. UK taxpayer burdened with fart farms that are 35% more inefficient than power stations, cost 22 times more than gas turbines to build and use more energy in their build than they will give out.
Corruption continues to pervade all corners of Westminster that Blair and chums got off to a fine art. Look at their property portfolios at the expense of the UK taxpayer.
Vote UKIP for a change and send a message to the ruling socialists (that includes wet Cameron).
New Labour kleptocracy has already been banished
The Eurozone is disintegrating as we write
….and “David Laws Lib Dem fiddler” says we should vote for UKIP to wipe out corruption.
Perhaps he has never heard of Tom Wise, the UKIP MEP jailed for two years in 2009 for fraudulently claiming £39,000 of parliamentary expenses.
We need a change from the main three because there is not any difference between them and not likely to be if we vote in the same old way.
To “change the system” requires a revolution as the incumbent vested interest parties of banks, corporations and politicians will not do it without prodding.
With 14% of the USA on food stamps and unemployment growing, I do think that the USA will have a much larger, countrywide “Tottenham moment” before the dust settles.
I have no idea how this will all be resolved. The banking, corporate and political vested interests in the Western World must wake up and realise they have pushed the people close to breaking point.
HA! What world do you live in?!
I can’t be bothered to refute all your ridiculous claims, but I thought you should read this (it proves without doubt that you’re wrong and you’ve been fooled by a spam e-mail)….
http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN05621
^download the full report and all you have to do is read the first paragraph to realise that you’re talking out of your arse. You can read the rest if you actually want to learn something. I’m guessing you’ll find some teleological way of dismissing this document, but I still think you should read it.
Are you not embarrassed that your whole world-view is built round a spam e-mail that is so easily refuted?
For those who can’t be bothered to read the document the fact is…
Pensioners entitlement £67
Asylum Seeker entitlemtn £36
Going down to Eastbourne, Guido? Will look forward to the blog of the talk.
What is “a certain type of middle class parent”? One who cares about their children? One who reads to their children and sure they do their homework etc?
I really detest the way a certain type of leftie use the term “middle class parents” as a term of abuse.
In my experience, it’s the gobby working/benefit class parents who gain disproportionately more for themselves and their children.
you are a teacher then?
No – a parent, married to a teacher.
That’s about right. The best ones are the so-called parents (well actually, usually the mother) who demand that their child be labelled as an SEN child even though there is little or nothing at all ‘wrong’ with them, and even though the child really doesn’t want that to happen.
“Gobby”?
of the gob i.e. mouth i.e. loud-mouthed.
Shaaduppa ya face!
‘What is “a certain type of middle class parent”?
—
One’s ‘Brian’ doesn’t like, but Jeremy and his team like that he doesn’t enough to feature and boost?
-
@theJeremyVine – Brian calls @BBCRadio2, says planning problems are due to middle-class people blocking developments, calls them “mean-minded menaces”
-
Anyone might feel this morning’s pre-pro meetings agreed a ‘theme’ for the day.
Gilbert actually said “pushy middle-class parents” which is even more airily dismissive.
Yep. Heard the so-called comedian Miranda Hart using the words ‘middle class woman’ as a derogatory term on the Graham Norton show. So what is Miranda (apart from not being funny at all). Working class, lower working class, Margaret Beckett loo-a-like?
If people take a genuine interest in making sure their children have a proper education what is wrong with that and what is wrong with being ‘middle class’…whatver that might be.
That’s Newsnight’s guest list sorted, then.
Has Paul Mason managed to shaft Jezza yet?
Seems to have the ‘new, improved’ blog system sussed anyway:
a) Don’t do it much
b) If you do, pull a fast one:

Get round that, inferior, non-elite media types and scummy licence fee paying drones! Only ‘real’ reporters get to tell you how such as Penny Red thinks the ever trusting UK public who the BBC speaks for should think!
But Free Schools have the SAME ADMISSIONS CRITERIA as local state schools. So this argument is really just against parents having a choice – or trying to say that some parents are too stupid to choose correctly. Very lefty.
If I was to go to all the trouble of mucking about setting up a school, I would kick out twats.
And run it properly, with discipline and standards.
That is PRECISELY the problem.
Eh? No.
The biggest problem is how to deal with twats.
Make them leader of the Labour party?
I mean that’s the problem the Left have with these schools.
Discipline, standards, and the ability to exclude twats.
Carry on like that and they’ll be improving exam results and producing balanced, well-educated young people.
Well you’re talking bollocks then. a straw man of “the left”.
I did used to know lefty teachers. they wanted all that. There were plenty of rules to stop too many exclusions, because that left a bigger problem of what to do with those that had been excluded.
Where is your “the left” that doesnt want schools to work?
Er – the subject of this post illustrates my point??
Only if you want to see it that way.
I see a comment about a depressing and negative, but probably accurate, idea that “sink schools” are a bugger to run.
Will Free Schools have more control over who they employ? Maybe it’s the shit teachers who are running scared
I understand that academies can offer their own contracts.
Yes – teachers are VERY scared of this.
It seems like it they apparently don’t have to be qualified. A good teacher knows his subject, is enthuiastic about it, but MUST BE ABLE TO PUT ACROSS what he is teaching to his pupils in a way they can understand otherwise he/she is wasting his time if it just goes over the kids heads.
I am sur quite a few of you have experienced that
At a guess these schools will be setup in fairly affluent areas, so that there will be no need for selection
Le me get this right these free schools are not payed and run by local government but by central government, the teachers do not have to be qualified teachers (suppose they will on a lower rate of pay and benefit) the schools will be directly answerable to central government great, now what is the record of government run projects in the past, there will come a time when HMG will no longer want to pay up, then what.
They are not under the control of the LEA.
They do not have to follow the socialist “one size fits all” National Curriculum.
They’ll be under the same scrutiny as any other school.
This is why they’ll work.
The unions, leftists and crap teachers don’t like it…. can’t think why….
“the socialist “one size fits all” National Curriculum”
That would be the thing created by the evil Thatcher government.
Wanker.
‘Evil Thatcher government.’ God. Words fail.
The main difference is the people who dont empty your bin every week will no longer have a say in eduacation policy-can you name any country in europe who insist the local council must be involved in eduacation in addition to whitehall and eighteen socialist quangos based on various university campus around the country, even the exams are set by old labour quango grandees
Are you saying crap schools had no part to play in the riots?
Correct, the only crap that was highlighted by the riots was the crap parenting.
I amsaying shite schools have little or nothing to do with rioting anonymous. The problem lies with crap parenting and lack of discipline, and the latter is all thanks to the Leiber Government.
the labour government made people change the behaviour of parents.
Wow.
So no problem then. Cameron can make all parents be great.
You sound like just the chap who would love to stand infront of 35/40 kids and wallop them into line, a good disciplinarian wacko! sorry you can not do that nowadays, I bet when Guido was in infant school he found out what a hair brush was for, no longer. All discpline starts in the home at an early age, very often parents are trying to juggle jobs so that their sprogs have something to eat, pay the rent and rates the extended family operated years ago but now that seems have gone into decline.
“So we really need to solve that by bringing all our children together and this free schools programme will contribute more to this social segregation.”
Thus the left wing speaks.
Bugger posted to early…
actually just moderate it away, havent the time to finish my rant.
They don’t want any schools to be different, in case they turn out to be better and show them up.
The riots were caused by the police shooting a Block man thus giving members of the Block community an excuse to go on the rob, just like 30 years ago.
The difference these days being there were a lot of white kids who think and act like Blocks who got involved as well.
Simple.
Ah but thirty years ago was different-No mobiles, facebook, blockberry or email they had to rely on the socialist workers party and hard left labour supporters to radicalise the mobs via landlines-most council estates were blacklisted by British telecom then
I sometimes agree with Order of the OTT, but like the poster above me can you really say that bad schools had nothing to do with the riots? They are not the only reason but they clearly play a big part.
But, his argument is that academies will make other schools worse. That isn’t necessarily true, and is in fact a bit OTT.
I want a free school, so I can drop my kids off and go to work and pick them up afterwards without juggling nursery and afterschool care pick-ups etc. Plus one that has a reasonable discipline and uniform code and requires modest input from parents, to discourage the lazy and feckless chav classes from polluting my own offspring,
You keep voting for it, suck it up.
“Segregation in education in London schools led to the London riots.”
Fair point
In the 1940′s there was segregated schooling, and London looked like a bomb had hit it.
Yep, and there was no looting. Iwonder why?
I think youl find there was and crime in general was high.
Don’t be confusing Guido’s tory bum suckers with facts.
Cutting the EMA.Don’t those crazy politicians remember the great pocket money riots of the past.
Asking for trouble they were.
EMA was simply a booby trap hostage scene cleverly brought in by Broon
I see a flaw in your logic.
BREAKING NEWS: FRANKFURTERS DON’T LIKE CRITICAL THINKING OR ORGANISED OPPOSITION TO NATION WRECKING.
I saw the interview and Gilbert looked the quintessential bourgeois metropolitan socialist. Shrill and whiney, too.
I doubt if he won a single waverer over to the LSN’s cause with that performance.
Similar point to the Toynbee story below, when all these dick heads start sending their own children to these crap schools they might have a bit of credibility, even if we still disagree.
The one thing that caused the riots was the lack of parenting, they have not brought thier children up with any sense of respect for others and no concept of right and wrong.
What we saw in the riots is a glimpse of the ferel youth taking the piss yet again and yet again the parents will bear no responsabilty.
thumbs up Billy
To close the divide between poor Britains and poor West Indians, governments chose the latter as the benchmark for all to aspire.
But that in essence is what socialism is about Billy, ignoring the family construct, telling parents they have no authority, telling children parents have no authority, giving students pocket-money (EMA) ffs.Give them the vote at 16,council housing at 16 anything to buy loyalty for the state because a socialist state cannot earn respect.
Why do lefties always talk about “our children”? Do they own them or something?
They are not my children, especially not the chavs and Jafaicans who speak (just) a language barely recognisable as English.
Free schools are an anathema to the corporations and the cultural Marxists. Therefore must be destroyed. They will be selective, properly run, disciplined and there to give a decent education.
Did somebody call?
How much is spent per head on education p.a?
Why aren’t all schools free schools?
If you’re interested in serious information or analysis you are on the wrong site. This place is to have a laugh reading the shit-for-brains tories talking ignorant shit out of their smelly arses. It’s where Cast-Iron Dave and his mates come to get their policy ‘ideas’.
Anonymous – do your homework after school and work hard then you may be able to develop the ability to put forward a proper argument instead of vituperative insults and tripe as you do now.
Over at the Grauniad, Order of the OTT must go to a CiF poster called Bonica, writing under another tedious article about Cameron’s posh upbringing.
Ready for this…?
“Make no mistake Cameron is as dangerous as Hitler.”
Post a link on the next thread
Sounds like an application of Godwins Law
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law
That is way bad. I aint rioting outside skool. Chav Inch High aint got any designa gear or trainaz. They well bad. The mobies are well rank. It aint worf rioting ova.
I have a dream. I have a dream that one day each city or municipal region will have just one big mega-school with a roll of 90,000-120,000 where all children aged 3-18 will have individual attention and small group-work following a progressive curriculum.
There will be cash payments to all children at the school gates. Uniform will be optional. Team games will be banned.
Mandatory Curriculum:
Diversity
Political struggle
Gender studies
Climate studies
Optional curriculum:
Media studies
Dance
Freedom Music
Graffiti
Body art
Citizenship and rights
Each child will be automatically awarded GCSEs (A*), (in 8 loosely academic subjects of their choosing), on reaching the age of 16.
Teachers will work one year on, one year off. There will be 5 Terms which will run for 4 weeks each followed by 6 weeks holiday. School day to run from 10:00 to 14:00.
All teaching staff to start at £80,000 per annum with non-contributory pension and own car (must be 110g/CO2 or less). Index linked pensions and statutory retirement option at 40.
Children would be sheltered from the brutality of capitalism and free from worry, the streets would be full of smiling citizens going about a carbon-neutral life and my shit would smell of violets.
Who’s going to join me?
I will, just as soon as I get back from picking up my prescriptions
You forgot lunch break.
That’s from 10.30 to 1.30.
Perhaps the BBC realised their earlier mistake in giving airtime to this prat.
In a two hander at 14hoo today against a spokesman for the Adam Smith Institute he was allowed to make a complete and utter pillock of himself, especially his claim that Free Schools will be taken over by creationists and his own 20 years experience teaching in comprehensive schools shows how important it is to have instructors who have been to teacher-training colleges compared to elite public schools where the masters rarely have such a background.
Because creationist agendas are not already all over the state schools system of course……..
He may have a point but restricting Free Schools doesn’t address his point. If he believes there is segregation in the current system and that it needs addressing then he should be in favour of getting rid of school catchment areas and letting in demand schools expand places. Is he? Perhaps you could ask him?
It just aint koot riotn ova skool. They don’t hava bitches with da bling, bling bling.
It don’t meana damn ting. It just aint kool to riota ova skool. It don’t mean a god damn thing it don’t get da bitches any bling, bling, bling. It aint kool innit.
It’s not just riots. Free Schools also cause AIDS, cancer and global warming!
Bloke is a twat.
At least he made himself look stupid beyond belief.
Francis Gilbert was equality for all in education.
At the lowest level possible
Is there anybody in the Labour Party (apart from Frank Field and Kate Hoey) who isn’t stark raving bonkers?
No, there isnt. Its really frightening.
Maybe we could test kids at say 11..
Then divide the academic and the practical kids into relevant educational/vocational schools so they can flourish..In say “grammar” schools or building/contruction or pratical engineering schools..
No wait, hold on…we really do need Meeja studies graduates from Luton University on the dole..Labour’s core vote.
The reason state schools are considered to fail is not because; governments of all persuasions over the last 40 years have implemented flawed changes; the existance of public and private schools, that teachers are not good enough or lazy (generally they are not at all).
it is because; a number of kids turn up at infant school unable to communicate, socialise, play with their peers, unable to hold cutlery or sit at a table, but are a wizard on a Playstation or Nintendo DS. They are behind where they should be before they start and that is not the fault of the teachers or the education system. It is the fault of their parents, most have two albeit one might be absent.
Some of the rioters will be parents already.
Until we address the problems of neglectful and abusive parents of the under 3′s we will continue to have problems with disruptive kids in the classroom who fall further behind and disrupt the learning of others.
No I am not a teacher, I am foster carer.
“You’ll get a certain type of middle class parent putting their child into this school…”
You mean, a parent who wants his or her children to receive a first-class education?
How bloody dare parents try to further their children’s aspirations! How dare they be so selfish at the expense of the greater good! How very…elitist!
They should do what all decent Guardian journalists and Labour MPs do and send their children to a private school instead.
Now that IS interesting!……….. especially when one considers the numbers of arrests of people from what can only be called “Privileged Backgrounds”!
Perhaps somebody should tell him!
Francis’ bizarre changes of position go beyond those mentioned in the Conservative Home article:
