Pilgrim’s Progress II
Remember our old friend Jane Pilgrim? The union staffer at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, who is paid a full time nurses salary not to nurse? She instead spends her days smearing Lansley. Well Guido hears that she was allowed to carry on as if nothing had happened, despite being busted running a private consultancy firm on the side, that used pictures of the hospital’s management, without their consent, as endorsements. Instead of being sacked, she was promoted by hospital managers to “management lead for trade unions.” Whatever that means.
While Pilgrim’s actions triggered outrage, with the issue of taxpayer funded union officials reaching Prime Minister Questions, and the government signalling a review into the practice, the original sinner and inspiration for the whole campaign has thus far got off very lightly. However Guido hears the net might be closing in on our old friend.
Geoff Thorne was a hospital porter and Secretary of the St George’s Hospital Unison branch. Like Jane Pilgrim he’s militant and ganged up with her to threaten a nurses strike at St George’s – as if it wasn’t enough that she wasn’t doing any actual nursing. Geoff had a cameo role in the Pilgrim saga when the Mail on Sunday outed him as Pilgrim’s lover and it emerged that he colluded in the lies spread about “meeting” Andrew Lansley, despite the fact that he boycotted the event with Pilgrim.
Well this morning Geoff Thorne was fired. Guido understands that this was for the leaking of confidential information, but is awaiting the official line. Geoff is not the only recent exit from St George’s Hospital in recent weeks. Within a few weeks of Guido breaking the Pilgrim mess back in May, the management at St George’s were cleared out. Normally, these sort of changes would happen as part of a bigger series of moves and restructuring. Not in this case – hospital sources are adamant that St George’s alone was singled out for the cleansing.The Chief Executive “resigned” and cleared his desk within 24 hours – without a replacement, two years early. Within days the Trust Chairman announced the end of her term. Even though she was eligible for another two years. She used to have Labour Party posters up in her office…
New management has been brought in, and are apparently on a bit of a rampage. Jane isn’t off the hook yet…

But this whole sorry saga is just a symptom of the dreadful NHS. I have recently seen two NHS Trust IT Directors waste over £100k on hardware that will not do the job because they needed another £20k to finish the installation but that they knew this extra money was not available, but when presented with a viable alternative that would have actually allowed them to deliver the service they wanted and save over £10k overall, they refused as it would make them lose face on the expenditure of the first £100k. They would sooner waste the money and not deliver the service rather than lose face. Even more amazing was that the management team were easily bamboozled by them.
Time to start really pruning the NHS its second only to the Education budget in waste and inefficiency, neither deliver anything like the service they should for the money spent on them and both are massively unaccountable.
We ARE in a state of National Emergency lets start rolling back that bloated State!

Hundreds of teachers are paid to shit stir under the ‘facilities’ arrangement where union officials receive paid time off to undermine headteachers and the policies of democratically elected politicians. Usually these hacks are the worst teachers you could find. Probably best that they spend little time with children.

It is clear that things are not well at St George’s for any innocent entering A&E and that is for sure. St Georges staff under pressure? Heaven help the patients. Standards of basic healthcare are quite frankly, appalling despite the clinically clean environment with people being subjected to totally unecessary and health-debilitating procedures. Senior staff are duplicitous, patronising and deceitful. The complaints procedure is a bad joke designed to heap insult upon injury. Frankly, what used to be called concentration camps with medical experimentation have their modern equivalent in this institution. A huge banner should read ‘Abandon hope, all ye who enter here’ rather than ‘Welcome (Wellcom?) to St George’s’. I am sure I speak for thousands of unseen and unheard patients and their families. Not to mention the staff who continue to labour from love amidst a growing majority of cheap and callous careerists.

Forty years ago I was told to avoid St George’s if had to go to hospital. It was said that if woke up in an ambulance and found it was going to St George’s you should throw yourself out – you had a better chance of survival. It was said to be nearly as bad as Lewisham (but Lewisham had the excuse of being a former workhouse infirmary which still had the same standards and mentality). plus ca change …

Very sad to see how this once fine institution has gone down the pan. Say what you will about it now, but in 1962 it saved my life and for that I have been grateful daily ever since. I am now 70 and still chugging happily along.

You should target those who believe their jobs may be at risk and offer to campaign for their dismissal for a modest fee, pointing out that these campaigns are the nearest thing to a guarantee of job security. I would of course ask for a modest commission but we can discuss the details.

Italy’s always been a basket case. On a skiing hol back in the 70s there was no loose change as it was worth a lot more as scrap metal and it was all being melted down. Had to accept goods in knd to make it up to the nearest bank note They can’t do that with the Euro though.
I found it interesting, not too long ago. Even the smallest shopkeepers would give you a till receipt for an icecream, making sure you took it out of the shop in case they got checked.
