+ + + Brown Resigns + + +

Puts wheels in motion for Labour leadership election.

UPDATE : Will be gone by conference. Offers the Lib Dems a chance to form coalition with him until the autumn, when he will be replaced by victor of Labour leadership contest. Clegg has requested formal talks. Quite the spanner in the works.

UPDATE II : And the Pound crashes in reaction…

So, Brown continues his all-out assault on democracy.

The penny may have started to drop finally that the whole country thinks Brown is a loathsome, inept, worthless piece of shit with no redeeming features whatsoever, and that his cowardly flight from every opportunity to face a vote might not have garnered the best PR.

So what does he suggest next?

A Lib/Lab League of Losers headed up by another totally unelected Labour twat!

This may be the finest moment of political comedy in many years.

Guido and his windowlickers have been dying for this moment when Brown resigns and when it happens he spoils it all for them by fucking the Libservative coalition and sending the Tories into panic mode.

Obsorne has now publicy shit himself and offered the Libs a referendum on AV as he sees power slipping away.

So much for wavy Davy’s “red lines”.
And the Conservatives have now conceded that a referendum on a form of PR is not just acceptable but something they are happy to offer.

          Mr Ned says:

          Agreed!!!

Labour and Liberals BOTH betrayed the country over a referendum and now they are both SHAFTING us all again.

There is NO democratic legitimately whatsoever!!!

          NEVER TRUST LIBERALS OR LABOUR!!!

When their coalition inevitably fails, the tories will win an overwhelming majority.

The country will surely REJECT PR in any referendum!

          • I think a lot of people have underestimated how close the tories and liberals have become over the last 5 years. Both are lead by pragmatists who should be able to do a deal that is in the best interests of the country, if not their own parties.

IF they work together well in practice, and have a secure Government over the next two years, then who is to say that they will not continue to do so if necessary after any subsequent election.

Indeed. I am not against electoral reform, so long as that reform produces an improvement in democracy in practice.

            Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

            We’ll see!!!

          • King Karlos says:

This is a stitch-up. There won’t be a referendum on PR. The twats will use whatever rainbow alliance mash-up they can cook up to change the system and keep the Tory’s out. Brown will rush out the legislation before conference and sell his soul to the smaller parties and the nationalists who’ll lap up a once in a lifetime chance to get a sniff of power. If Clegg falls for it he’s a bigger c unt than Brown.

          • Mr Ned says:

King Karlos, the labour offer does not include a referendum. They want to force a constitutional change in how we elect Parliament on us by fiat without ANY consultation or any chance to have our say in spite of the fact that NOBODY listed AV as an issue on the doorstep during the election at all.

            How undemocratic is that?

Nick Clegg – the man? who shafted the country over the EU Referendum vote & now betrays us again by getting into bed with Brown & Labour. A British govt headed up by two sub prime losers (election losers that is)?

          • Casca says:

          • RT says:

Why would it mean another unelected prime minister? Apart from Brown that is. The calculation would be to elect a new Labour leader and then go to the country in the full knowledge that the leader in question isn’t Brown. Their polling would have told them that they lost X votes/seats because people thought Brown was a *unt and therefore they will gain X votes/seats because their new leader isn’t (not necessarily true of course).

Meanwhile Cameron would have to decide at what point to vote them down. He would of course take the blame if the government fell because of a Tory vote and could expect a kicking at the polls.

But at least we now know why we don’t want PR in this country: most Liberal Democrats are closet socialists and Clegg is a weasel holding this country to ransom, with the smallest proportion of the vote gained by any of the 3 main parties. So much for Guido’s anti-Labour analysis a few days ago.

The life of the Rainbow Coalition will be measured in months, which gives the Conservatives time to tweak their Manifesto fairly severely and find the 5% extra they need for a comfortable majority. Also, “A” listing will be a dead duck. Local associations will find their own candidates and get the vote out.
If Brown intends to hang on till the Autumn, bear in mind that his control system is still in place. Brown is quite capable of reversing his decision and bullying himself back into power, the intention of standing down conveniently forgotten when and if Clegg falls for the confidence trick. Watch for the leadership election being slowed down and a startlingly long time allowed for the candidates list to close.

Of COURSE Hague should be leader. He took over a little too early. Cameron is a text-book example of how to screw up EVERYTHING – listening to focus groups, wrong advisers, wrong election slogan, too politically correct, pushing green/environmental concerns just as Al Gore’s crap was exposed for the fraud it is, and, finally, being scared to say ANYTHING concrete for fear of upsetting someone. What a twat.

The whole thing stinks and Cameron has to say to the Queen he will go it alone – or will the last Englishman left in the country turn out the lights when we self-destruct with these absurd tinkering by Brown to keep his cronnies in power.

Better get your warehouse open Guido, those V for Vendetta masks will be needed soon.

Well, England, for the first time since 1066 we are being over-run and shafted by foreigners – we need a new Glorious Revolution, a new Cromwell, a new King Billy, a new Churchill. This calls for a futile gesture!

Can’t believe how LibDems/Labour could accept the two nationalist parties (independence seekers) as forming the balance of power over UK legislation. The whole idea of LD/Lab pact is obscene – and probably totally unworkable.

  75. 129
    jdennis_99 says:

Wonderful – the one time I actually DON’T want him to resign (because his apparent desperation to stay in Number 10 drives the Lib Dems towards the Conservatives with the potential of forming a majority coalition), and the bastard actually does it.

So now the Lib Dems are going to talk to Labour to see what they’ve got to offer. Which leaves the Conservatives no choice but to give further ground, in order to prevent the awful prospect of a ‘rainbow/traffic lights/bunch of election-losing hoons’ coalition.

The forces of the left are deliberately conspiring to keep the most popular political party in Britain out of government. If this had happened if Labour had been the largest party, I have the distinct feeling that the gang of miscreant brownshirt thugs they jokingly call ‘activists’ would be staging riots all over the place, which the BBC would obligingly splatter all over the news.

I am now ready for the uprising. This is a democratic outrage!

What a truly tragic figure. He always wanted to be prime minister. He became party leader without an election, he became PM without an election, ended up totally shit at the job, and finally faced the electorate and was roundly rejected. He will spend the rest of his days knowing he was the most unpopular and useless PM in British history and was hated and rejected by the people.

If you think Heath was bitter, you ain’t see nothing yet. Brown will now live out his days a bitter, twisted creature, being eaten away inside by fury at the voters not recognising his genius.

  77. 133

Wow, you’re not going to believe this!!! The Balls/Whelan speech read by Brown was not what Mandelson and Campbell had approved.!!

It’s now open warfare in No10. Gordon has opened the door to negotiations but it’s Balls who benefits and not Miliband as Mandelson and Campbell demanded.

        • 446

Joey Jones already on message for Mandelson, announcing Mandelson will have nothing to do with Labour leadership election. Joey is taking promotion seriously.

Boulton has stormed off after Campbell and C4 cameraman has said Boulton at one point holding Campbell by lapels. This goes back a long way to when Boulton went off message and favored Brown over Blair during 2005. Campbell slammed the door to Boulton on exclusive Labour announcements.

          Zaragon says:

Not true – all the leaders (even Salmond) have acknowledged that they did not get what they want from the election. Whether they should remain leaders of their respective parties is a question all of them need to consider when we know who is forming a government. If the Tories are in opposition there will definitely be some calling for Dave to go. It’s worth noting that he only lost because of the constituency boundaries – if you reverse the vote share percentages for Tories and Labour then Labour would have 60+ majority and would be proclaiming the result as a rock solid mandate. And before you say we support FPTP so can’t complain – we don’t support FPTP with the boundaries skewed in favour of Labour. On any objective analysis the Tories did the best both in terms of the actual result and direction of travel from last time.

          • Sam says:

Well put Zaragon. But if this stitch-up goes ahead, the Tyranny of Losers will ensure the Tories never get within sniffing distance of power again. And then the country truly is fucked to hell in a handcart

      Don’t count any chickens…..

Even if a Lib/Lab/Bitsandbats alliance came about (no guarantee – they haven’t started formal talks yet), it wouldn’t last long. The economic pressures are too severe for it to survive long with virtually no majority, and the electorate won’t like a government with an unelected PM and two minority parties, judged by both seats and votes.

If it did happen, the next election, which would almost inevitably be quite soon, would be a Conservative landslide. The Lib Dems would be all but wiped out, and Labour would probably lose votes and seats.

Be careful what you wish for, Jimmy.

          Think very carefully, Jimmy.

What do you think the electorate wants – a government that addresses the nations dire Labour-bequeathed economic mess, or a lot of political horse-traders?

What did they vote for, Jimmy?

Oh yes – I forgot. Labour have utter contempt for the electorate, don’t they? Sooner or later, the electorate are going to notice….

          • Jimmy says:

They voted for none of the above. Gordon is the only one yet to grasp this.

The LibDems got 22% of the vote and less than 10% of the seats – their power should be twice what it is. The moaning on here about ‘number of seats gained’ or “percentage of votes” is irrelevant. hmm, can i ask,?

    why can’t we try this?

in the situation where we have no overall majority then the following works:

NI + 1 vote no matter how many seats
Wales = 1 vote as above
Scotland = 2 votes as above

these are based on people who live there, but we could do it this way

NI= -10 seats based on benefits
Wales = -10 seats based on benefits
Scotland = -60 seats based on benefits

or we could just discount the outlying areas and let the votes in the core count….

DAVID CAMERON was deprived of a Commons majority by failing to secure the votes of just 16,000 people, according to an expert analysis of election results.

The findings by Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher reveal that the Tories came tantalisingly close to securing a clean victory at the polls.

“Cameron came so near and yet so far,” write the directors of the elections centre at Plymouth University. “Just 16,000 extra votes for the Tories, distributed in the 19 constituencies in which the party came closest to winning, would have spared us a weekend of negotiation and speculation.”

Oh come on surely you can seee this has been Mandelscum’s strategy from day one.

At the outset of the election the polls were showing a hung parliament. Labour’s manifesto included a promise of voting reform precisely to position for this eventuality and then Brown asisted Cleggmania with his I agree with Nick to blunt Cameron’s image as the agent of change and to draw some of the fire from the Tory press.

What annoys me is that those silly little boys surrounding Cameron have walked straight into it.

      • 1183
        Zaragon says:

So true. I could not understand Cameron’s approach. He should have said “I want to thank Nick Clegg for sticking to what he said during the campaign and offering to talk to us first. However, we have to do things according to the constitution. As the serving Prime minister Gordon Brown must determine if he can still command a majority in Parliament. If he can, his government will continue. If not he must resign. If the Queen then asks me to try to form a Government I look forward to productive discussions with Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats.” That way he would not have been talking to Clegg at all until Brown was in opposition and would have the option of leading a minority government as he would already be PM. It could have gone the other way of course – but then it looks like it could anyway.

I agree with your last comment but he could claim the right to form a minority government. An early election would be good for the Tories in these conditions. • 1221
          Zaragon says:

He can’t claim the right – because he doesn’t have the right! Gordon remains PM and his government goes on unless he resigns or is defeated in Parliament. That’s the constitution. Power only changes hands after an election because the PM resigns, knowing he would be defeated in Parliament as his opponents now have a majority. If he wanted to he could wait until Parliament returns and let the opposition pass a vote of confidence but that would be pointless. In this case, his opponents (the Tories) do NOT have a majority. Gordon is calculating the other parties will not vote him down. He is within his rights to do that. He can buy Clegg with electoral reform and the Nationalists with cash. There is nothing to stop him doing that. We can riot all we like!

Are you aware that you just got played, as they say in America?

The only reason why the Conservatives don’t have a majority now is because of Labour’s meddling & rigging of the system over the last few years. Labour won more seats with LESS of a percentage of the popular vote in 2005! This time round, the Tories won 36% of the vote, yet ended up with fewer seats than needed to get an outright majority. What an absolute scandal!
So stop all this rubbish about how “no one has a majority, so Labour have just as much moral authority to rule as anyone else” !! You rigged the system, and yet you still managed to get your arses kicked in the election, and now you’re trying to steal the victory.

Tories are a MINORITY REGIONAL party bit like the SNP – except with nae mandate to govern. I hear Alex Salmon is offering Dave some lessons on how to put together a minority government…….

For months the libdems and labour have been changing their language, they stopped talking about proportional representationa dn started talking about “fair votes”. I watched their language and could *see* that they were conspiring together, no matter the pretence at combat. These motherfuckers are stealing this election, and every subsequent one. It is happening now. It is happening in front of our eyes. The scum at the BBC are talking about “proportional voting”, and “electoral reform” when what is being plotted is an imposed system that will see labour remain in power forever.

For fucking ever. Getting it? Can you see what it is yet?

This is how it looks when a country slides into fascism – this is what you read in the papers and see on the telly. This is the feeling your have in your guts when you’re wondering if you could have done something earlier, when you wonder what you can do today. This is the moment when you realise all the piddling party bullshit was a smokescreen, a scam, when behind the scenes, for decades, the plans were being hatched.

Did you ever wonder? If you’re a bright inquisitive person you probably have. Did you ever wonder what it was like in Germany, as the slide took hold, as the tipping point was reached? Well now you know. The collusion for personal gain of the political classes, the betrayal of principles and good sense, the rush, the momentum, the poisonous naked lust for power.

    I think it’s time…

You idiot he’s not resigning until October at the earliest and not before he has put together a coalition of losers to keep labour in power and to foist another unelected labour leader on us for another four years.

Whilst he’s doing that he’s going to agree a deficit reduction plan with his welsh, scottish and northern irish collaborators who are all going to demand, as their price for supporting him, that any cuts and costs don’t fall in their backyard.

What does that leave?? It leaves we English to carry the can of the whole deficit reduction programme whilst the welsh, the scottish and northern ireland continue to drain increasing sums of money from our Treasury!!!

        Like fuck!

However, a little wrinkle for those who like constitutional niceties: In normal times, Brown, as an ex-PM would expect to be elevated to the HoL – where he can join his friend Mandelson. However, the convention is that a PM is not elevated ahead of his predecessor, in this case Blair.

So, poetic justice, twice over. Blair held Brown back from being PM and now could hold him back from being in the Lords. Oh joy!

He said it was urgent that country has a new and stable government and that the Lib Dems now had a choice:

    1.To go in with the Lab Party in a governemnt that would not be stable or secure (relying on minor parties for a majority), that would be headed by a second unelected PM in a row (which would be unaccepatable to the maj of people) and whcih would impose voting reform without a consutlation;

    or
2.To continue talks with the Conservatives and make a coalition in a government that would have a stable and secure majority (of 76), an elected PM in David Cameron who obtained most votes and seats at the election, and which would say the voting system should be subject to a referendum.

This should be a great news day for the Conservatives, for Right-thinking people in general and Britain in the long term. Gordon Brown, the second worst Prime Minister in living memory (after Edward Heath) has finally announce he will resign…. eventually. This is a clear case of the LibDems dictating Government policy, and Gordon Brown falling (or being pushed by Mandelson) onto his rusty sword. If the Liberal Democrats agree to prop up this failed Labour Government, it would allow the Millibands or Balls to become the second unelected Prime Minister in a row.
If the Tories do not now form a coalition, it would leave them to free to keep to the moral high ground in opposition, keeping their powder dry for a future election in six to twelve months. It will also mean they would not need to keep begging for help from the discredited LibDems allies. The Tories can then adopt a truly patriotic, Conservative manifesto, whilst the internal party forces of true conservatism can then steer the Cameron Shadow Cabinet to a position of clear blue water. This Lib-Lab-Nationalist Coalition of Losers will be like herding cats, and will be rightly critiqued by the markets. The Nationalists will demand more funds with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – raising English anger into a new fury. The Losers Coalition will also have to deal with the tax rises, spending cuts and growing number of strikes (Labour’s own Unite Union bringing misery to thousands of British holidaymakers for a start). The Tories can return in six months, and if under a hastily installed PR system , can do so with tacit support of new UKIP MPs!!
The other bit of good news was the Eurozone bail-out, but not for the reasons you may think. I am opposed to the Euro and the EU project tooth and nail! I want it to collapse, and not threaten our freedom and democracy ever again, and I think the Eurozone has put all its chips on black, and it’s come up red! The $1 trillion dollar bail out is truly staggering. The Euro-ministers have thrown in the proverbial kitchen sink (and I don’t understand they can afford that) yet this will still not be enough to cover an Italian default, but only Greece, Portugal, Spain and maybe Ireland. After that, they have nothing left in the tank, and the bail-out may still fail. The agreement also has to be approved by all Eurozone Governments, and this may even prove to be difficult to do so in the paymaster German parliament, now that Angela Merkel has lost her majority today. The Germans are spitting feathers over this, and are demanding draconian measures on the Club Med defaulters. Harsh fiscal measures will bring the Greeks, Portuguese and Spanish people out on the streets, with revolution a potential. The alternative is to let the profligate Club Med governments to continue frittering away billions to go bankrupt or be expelled from the eurozone. Either way, a big EuroCrunch is coming! Today’s market bounce will also hinder German exports, as the euro is starting to climb in value again. We cannot trust the EU’s fiscal management either, as the ECB is breaking its own rules, and will now buy Greek government bonds. How can we trust them when they don’t even stick to their own rules. Thanks to our surrender-monkey government, even though we are thankfully not in the eurozone, we are still being stung for £8 billion of bail-out. How many cancer drugs would that pay for here?
Finally, if Nick Clegg and the LibDems are so keen on a fair proportional representation electoral system, why are they also so enthusiastic to happily hand over our legislative process to majority voting in the EU Parliament, removing any control the British people have over their own destiny!

    ToryMiner says:

When I grew up, Northern Ireland had just 12 MPs in very large constituencies. The reason, I believe, was that Stormont wielded the power, and equal representation at Westminster was not required. Numbers were increased after abolition of Stormont, but never reduced when power was agian devolved. No attempt has been made to reduce the number of Westminster MPs from Scotand after devolution (obviously). Even if there was no Edinburgh Parliament there would still be too many Scottish MPs (though geograpphy of the far flung Highland and Islands is some excuse). The situation in Wales is not quite so acute, as the Assembly has less power, and the Welsh are not quite so one-eyed. But now we seem to have the prospect of the UK being ruled by a superfluity of Labour Scottish MPs, aided and abetted by, ye gods, the SNP who’s ultimate aim is the destruction of the UK. At least Sinn Fein has the grace not to take up its seats. Is this the final, belated, revenge fro the Act of Union 1707?

Essentially, I was amusing myself with the thought that, constitutionally, Brown, as ex-PM, could expect to be elevated to and join his good friend Mandelson in the HoL. However, convention dictates (not the Brown ever pays attention to that) that an ex-PM is not elevated to the Lords ahead of his predecessor.

So Blair, having stood in the way of Brown becoming PM fr ten years could equally be the cause of Brown failing to take ermine.

I don’t blame Boulton a single shred of an iota for losing his rag with Campbell – speaking cringe inducingly softly and painfully smugly about what is essentially an inexcusable perversion of democracy. Labour lost – Cameron got more votes than they did in 2001 AND 2005, has the moral and psephological legitimacy to govern, but he can’t purely because some utter Hunts can’t seem to come to grips with the fact that the public don’t want them in office any more. I’m checking politicalbetting and this blog every 10 minutes for updates and it’s only succeeding in making me indescribably angry. It defies sense, and indeed belief, that Campbell dares claim that Labour are acting in the national interest. Without wanting to sound like a Daily Mail reading aspirational ex-pat, I’ve just about had it with this country. What was it Blair said to Ashdown about having emptied the Labour party of meaning but given them power in return? New Labour was created purely to gain power and it has not changed one miserable bit.

Clegg wants PR because it means his party will get more seats.

Brown wants PR because he realises that with the libdems in-tow, it’d mean that labour can never ever lose power.

We’ll be stuck with a permanent labour government and no way to get rid of them. Ever.

The libdems and labour have seen that with PR, they can basically stay in power forever because with the amount of state-dependents that’s been created, you’ll never be able to get over 50% of the voters voting tory. That was Brown’s plan all along; create enough people dependent on the state so that the opposition can never get in.

If this deal goes ahead, then the country is fucked forever.

I never thought I’d see the day when the politicians were so insanely hungry for power that they’d actually demolish democracy entirely.

The economy will collapse, but they won’t care; the UK will become another North Korea.

We need to stand up and fight. And we need to do that right now.

It’s organic that labour should retreat gracefully. that they do not simply shows they place the national interest of this country second, or even third behind their undisguised lust for control (not power – that implies legitimacy). I’m talking of the abusive kind of power. So it is that the treachery runs deep and the unwritten rules of our constitution are trampled on as easily as the written ones of America. Shame on the labour party and the liberals for not playing by British rules but some other alien corruption that dooms the majority of the planet to live under despotic rule.
