I’m more optimistic, Mr Ned. I think with Dave in power we can start to agitate almost immediately to shift public perception, so we never go back to Labour, but we do start taking our liberties back – from the EU, from the stasi councils, from the HoC… Jesus, the list is so long!
Maybe in 2014-15 things will look better. If not, hopefully UKIP or a new Libertarian-type party a la Ron Paul will be a credible alternative.

If debt has to be forgiven; forgive it at consumer level as well as with the banks. Share the pain.
Borrowing money for a massive fiscal boost is not a complete solution. There may not actually be an effective policy response to avoid a depression. There is no golden rule that says there has to be a solution.
All of these spendaholic wasters who’ve taken on too much debt should have to pay it back, not be bailed out by the rest of us who have spent the last ten years living within our means.
It really is that fucking simple. In their heart of hearts the electorate knows that many of them have been living on the ‘never never’ for the past decade. Borrowing more and more money ‘cos interest rates were low and their house ‘went up’ by 25K last year.
They know this. They know it wasn’t particularly prudent and they understand they need to pay back this money. It is only this ev il, fuck-witted government (which has done exactly the same thing with all our money) who finds it convenient to kid on that all that insane borrowing prior to 1997 was entirely rational and the reason it’s all gone tits up is not becxause it was never sustainable – fuck no – it’s cos the fucking bankers won’t lend y’all even more money so you can do the same again next year.
Now this message appeals to some voters because they are fucking plankton but deep down the majority of voters know that it is they who over-borrowed, they who got carried away with soaring houseprices (engineered by low interest rates by this evil government) and that they need to pay this cash back.
The problem appears to be that (and I guess the Tories have conducted their internal polls to confirm this) that it is electoral suicide to suggest that folks homes are not worth 168K each on average and that actually, we’d all be much beter off if our houses only cost half as much.

If UK house prices crash as a result then good. They should be down by at least 40% to get back to reasonable, historical levels which ordinary people can afford without getting a huge, crippling mortgage around their necks for the rest of their lives.
