Armando Iannucci Foresaw All

You can just imagine the panic in Downing Street on Friday with Tom Watson having conversations exactly like those in this clip, telling Damian and Derek to undo what he doesn’t know about and wouldn’t even remember if he did. The excuse lines used by Damian and Derek come straight from episode 6 of The Thick of It - including “this email was never intended to be seen by anyone but the recipient”.

Draper of course added to the real comedy with his defining Channel 4 News soundbite yesterday – “I wasn’t lying on purpose”. Armando Iannucci’s fictional version was “I unintentionally lied. Unknowingly might have told an untruth”.

Guido particularly likes the line “Malcolm Tucker has left the building”Damian McBride has left the building.

“So I am sorry. I am particularly sorry to the individuals mentioned in those juvenile emails, and especially sorry to Nadine Dorries, George and Frances Osborne and David and Samantha Cameron. I can understand why they – and others – may be sceptical but all I can do is absolutely promise that these stories were just daft ideas that never – and would never have – got off the drawing board.”

I guess that death-camps in the 3rd Reich were also ideas that would never have left the drawing-board, unless they actually did (leave).

As well as Imodium, Draper has obviously bought a copy of the Defamation Act 1996 for bedtime reading as he distances himself from this and apologises profusely. But don’t worry Derek, you’re so small as to be irrelevant, provided you keep grovelling and stay out of the way. Nadine Dorries is consulting lawyers over whether she can get public information disclosure from Downing Street, which might help her to sue Whelan or Brown. You only need expect the process server’s knock if you’re the only route to the White House, so to speak. Watch this space…

Out of interest were the emails from McPoison’s official email address at No10, i.e. a .gov.uk or .gsi.gov.uk email address – if so he has broken the Civil Service Code. Also were there other addressees with official government email addresses. If so a complaint to the Cabinet Secretary might be in order for misuse of Government computers.

      Gooey Blob says:

Indeed, there is something very rotten in the heart of Gordon Brown’s Downing Street. The more I see of the man, the more I believe it is Gordon Brown himself who has the rotten heart. More obsessed with spin than Blair’s government was, he is reportedly most upset that cartoonists portray him as overweight. His first thought at all times is not “how can I best run the country”, or even “how can I best portray my party in a positive light”, but “what can I do to put one over on the Tories today”. Brown looks – to my mind at least – to be behind all of this. It is nasty stuff, and a government should be above all of this.

Politics is a brutal game at times, but playing the man rather than the ball is not acceptable. Gordon has built up a spite-ridden regime reliant on smears, lies and instant rapid rebuttals. This isn’t about running the country, but about trying to kick the Tories. It is immature student politics.

Gordon MUST come out of hiding and make a statement. No ifs, no buts, he is accountable this time and risks further damage to his already battered reputation with every hour he delays.

      Where are you, Gordon?

        Budgie says:

There have always been personal attacks in politics, but it always seemed to be self censored to a relatively low level. All that changed in the 1980s when Labour, unable to argue logically against the Tories, started a campaign of personal vilification of Margaret Thatcher.

Such personal attacks became so commonplace that BBC “comedy” shows featured “jokes” along the lines of: “Thatcher … hand … bag” (hur, hur, hur, hur) and other Dolly like excuses for humour. All this generated an atmosphere – a social pressure – that has prevented an accurate comparison of the legacy of both Mrs Thatcher and the Tories with New Labour.

It also enabled Blair to get virtually a free ride on the MSM – no-one was brave enough to effectively and persistently point out all the sleaze, lies, incompetence and corruption in New Labour right from the start (eg the Ecclestone affair and the pensions debacle) because of the “euphoria” in favour of New Labour that had infected the chattering classes.

Excellent! One doesn’t need to believe in kharma to know that one’s sins will seek ye out eventually unless one stops and makes amends!

More power to your elbow Guido/Paul!

What I would like to ask Guido is this: has New Labour spent 12 years dismantling the British constitution and gerrymandering the electorate by error or choice? Have they just been mistakenly leftish-liberalish in their views on immigration, devolution and so on OR has this been a cynical, NuLabour ploy to ensure they have even more of a built-in bias to the electorate and new institutions too sensitive and difficult to discuss or dismantle?

    1. Where once we had a common constitution and Parliament, now we have a Welsh talking shop, a Scottish half-parliament and the English … well we have nothing of course!
    2. Where only one MP represented one constituency, we now have two in Scotland and Wales; one of whom can vote on things that do not even affect them in their homeland but do the English!
    3. Where we had border controls and immigration limits, for 12 years we’re had a laissez-faire policy which has left in two million WITHOUT any consultation or prior approval of the indigenous population – you and me!
    4. Where we once let the immediate family in of a resident, we now let their next nearest relatives in ad infinitum without a stop!
    5. We let folk in on poor documentation as seen in this latest terrorist threat and ask them to be ever so jolly nice and report back for a proper interview with proper papers … and they don’t!
    6. We let folk in on student papers who then take up full time jobs at airline cargo handlers for instance!
    7. We have a civil service out fo control with a million extra, often very daft, jobs created at our expense
    8. Gordon the Moron has extended benefits so even middle-class folk have to get some benefits thereby making them, like the civil service, just a little more beholden to the government.
    9. Asylum seekers that pass through any number of safe countries, which under the UN treaty they should have applied to enter at the first opportunity in the first safe country, are allowed to come and stay in the UK … and never seem to return home!
    10. I could go on … but you get the point!

All of this makes me wonder … leftish liberalism or a deliberate ploy of the NuLabour project to make their existence easier, more likely to be elected, more likely to divide and weaken opposition?

The Tories got into trouble (rightly) in Westminster for gerrymandering their constituency through selecting council house tenants; have Labour done this on the whole country by allowing in immigrants that are more likely to vote Labour, by creating huge new swathes of people more financially dependent on the government, by breaking up the once-level playing field of the UK constitution?

Normally Guido, I subscribe to cock-up rather than conspiracy but on this occassion, I am not so sure … please DO look into the background to the New Labour Project – the truth is out there!

The Lesson unto Old-Noo (Neé Noo-Old) GrinningBoringLiars is taken from Mose, Chapter 50, . says:

    1. And Mose and MincingSpinningBot, having again been driven away from the habitation of decent and honourable men, returned once more into the desert.

    2. And they were benders. And neither knew or understood the meaning of Truth.

    3. And MincyBotty spake unto Mose, saying : Thou art indeed the one destined to lead the sheeple out of the desert, but they have forsaken thee, and gone their own way, and no longer heed thy voice or imprecations.

    4. And Mose waxéd wroth, and lifted up his voice and said : Oh hear ye, tribes that owe allegiance to ME. For I have savéd the world, and all that therein is. And nothing is my fault, neither can any blame be cast upon me.

    5. For have I not fixéd the roof in weather that was good, such that no water, or debt appeareth unto thee. Neither shall any man owe more than he hath, except he that hath nothing, and then he is mine completely, and I will give him parchment upon which to declare his penury.

    6. And have I not numbered the people and counted them, and exacted tribute such that they speak my name? And have I not increased the numebr of jobsworths, and jobsworths.

    7. But there were none to hear or heed him.

    8. And MincingWrinkleBum considered these things in his heart, and then answering, said. Verily, in truth I do not see it in the way thou dost. For the people at large despise thee and me and all the machinations of that which thou professeth to hold dear.

    9. Come therefore, let devise a plan that is cunning and impossible. For I am thy chief at the art which is dark, and would fain deliver thee from ridicule and oblivion.

    10. Let us therefore promise unto every man that hath a chariot, being old, a bag of shekels, such that he may obtain a chariot which is noo.

    11. But after the manner of thy former promises, forget ever to pay, or increase the taxes upon him that draweth down the shekels, and leave him even more in thy debt.

    12. And Mose considered these things in his heart. And, being desperate, said, Prepareth now a speech unto the sheeple, such that, when the lost tribes appear, we can deceive them with thine idea.

    13. But harken unto me, nothing will be my fault.

More embarrassing… Isn’t everyone allowed to daft things when young and unmarried?

Many people must have copies of them, and some snaps have definitely appeared in local papers; online they have been cropped of certain persons; or they have been ‘whoosh-clucked’ altogether more recently. McBotulin, the seedy tack-monger, didn’t even have fresh, unseen pics to sell! The pics from student days are old news… Undignified, but VERY old news.

Should retaliation ever be thought approriate… Doesn’t everybody in the land have a copy of the ‘Gordon the Bogeyman’ video clip, and the less obviously photoshopped of the rocking horse pics… the one where he’s waving a toffee apple? Even I have several such things in a file… mislabelled… humour.

Not wishing to pour cold water on matters, but we still have to deal with a Prime Minister who is so out of his depth that the Governor of the Bank of England (print your own buy one get one free) has given up.

The [second] home secretary has already been sidelined (vis death of the newspaper seller and the great pakistan visa caper) Gordon took over the interviews as Ms Smith (see me for an 89p John lewis plug) looked on, and the once ample cleavage strapped down.

We have Gordon also efffectively running Darlings portfolio. In the midst of a series of major financial problems at home, Sono’themanse wanders off to an economic summit held in a warehouse complex in East london, delivers a couple of sermons from the syndicated sermon club, not realising that any brilliant thoughts would be in closed session and not for wider public consumption.

There is a saying in military circles “my enemies enemy is my friend” and “keep your friends close and your enemies closer still”. Trouble is, noone wanting to be re-elected as HM opposition, wants to get that close to Gordon anymore and he now fully realises it’s a matter of how long can he hold on with the realistic hope that when the Tories take over (as the sadly must conditions under their tenure will be so harsh that Gordons reign will be looked on favourably and that he will be in a strong position to pick up a few bob on the world stage just as the saintly rev. Tony Blair has done. There is also the mastter of the rev. tony pitching us all into a war and telling monster porkies over WMD’s. Gordonsd ruthless cutting of defence budgets. so bad that squadies have to trawl the internet to get better quality battle kit . Just don’t get me started on deathtrap snatch landrovers , designed for N. Ireland but used in desert conditions.

OK enough said I’m off to have a pint before the pub closes for good….as it will do… and finally, MP’s allowances should be taxed and only distributed on presentation of vouchers supported by properly audited accounts “raw meat 3″ would probably be Ok if put down as subsistence and a bag of potatoes is also claimed at the same time. TELLING THE TRUTH WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOUR!!!. They are doing the job that the BBC SHOULD be doing, but that the BBC are utterly failing in doing.

When the BBC asks, who is controlling the blogs? They should be told, it is the INDEPENDENT authors and editors and they are NOT beholden to anyone, not the global NWO elite, nor the political class, nor anyone else. Their one and only SOLE loyalty is to the TRUTH as they see it and that is the reason why the blogosphere is a far superior upholder of truth and exposer of relevant and critical and necessary information than the pathetic, supine and controlled BBC and THAT is the beauty of the blogosphere.

The BBC only speak for this labour government they do not speak for me or any people that i know, it is a typical labour attack when they get caught doing wrong.
The difference between labour and Conservative is, if a Conservative is caught doing wrong, they will be hounded to within an inch of lives by the media, they will be fired, or they will resign immediatley, they will be punished accordingly, if not they will be shunned by collegues.
If labour does wrong there is complete denial, soft questioning from media, transfer as much as they can to be spread round all parties, and ‘only’ if push comes to shove, and all options are exhausted, and protection of gordon brown is paramount, will there be a resignation, which means absolutely nothing as they still manage to keep all their pensions/payouts etc. and pop up being paid elsewhere.
I get so angry at people that say they’re all the same, question give me a for instance, and what the consequence was.

One has to wonder what the Labour party is thinking, allowing itself to be led by a man who sanctions this sort of behaviour. Let’s be honest, this goes all the way to the top. Gordon Brown’s only reason for wanting to be PM is to try and put one over on his political opponents. The black-hearted imbecile has set up a nasty, spiteful and vindictive operation where smearing the opposition is not just tolerated, but actively encouraged – just so long as you don’t get caught, that is.

It makes me wonder if Labour really might be better off with someone else instead. Come on Labour, wake up. This man will is dragging you down into the gutter, and he’s dragging the country down too. You need to make it clear to Gordon, in no uncertain terms, that this must stop. The country is in a mess largely of Brown’s own making, yet all he cares about is smearing his opponents. He should concentrate on getting the country’s finances in order instead.

Gordon Brown owes his own party an apology, on top of those he was trying to smear. He has let them down very badly indeed.

If hating everything this vile and corrupt labour party stands for (by their actions) nakes one automatically a tory, then the tories should win the next election with a majority of 450+

Actually, if one includes non voters, tories, liberals, UKIP, Greens and all the others, then altogether they make up something like 85% of the current population.

Opinion polls artificially increase the apparent support of the mainstream parties by not including the people who will not vote (due to being disgusted by ALL politicians) and seeing as this will be about 40% of the population, this means that the ‘none of the above’ supporters are the most numerous and therefore potentially hold the most power in our current political system.

Labour won a 60+ seat majority off the back of only 22% support. They are hated far far more now than then.

I think that after 12 years of the most unreasonable government this country has ever had that comment is totally fatuous – and if you mean that we hate what this government has done to our country and what our present Prime Minister has done to the economy in particular during the 10 years he was Chancellor and almost 2 as Prime Minster then yes I suppose we are what you term “hate-mongers” but what you also need to appreciate is that a sizeable majority of the electorate appears to feel the same way and the level of anger against the government but especially Brown is extremely high.

Now you can say that that is totally unfair and that Brown is doing his best and although he made some mistakes during his time at the Treasury would the Tories have done any better or worse but unfortunately that argument doesn’t really count – people will vote against Labour because they feel that – nobody is listening;nobody cares;politicians but particularly recently Labour politicians are playing us for fools on their expenses and that despite all Brown’s pronouncements on what he’s actually doing or spending nothing material is happening on the ground and for the man in the street all they can see is rising unemployment;stagnating property values and those that have been prudent all their lives and saved being penalised to asist those in the community who have been profligate. That’s actually what Labour is up against. The Tories probably won’t be any better but people want the government punished and will punish them decisively at the June local and euro elections and probably at a general election too when it’s called.

The thing about this latest “scandal” is that it doesn’t resonate well with the public who detest this sort of thing particularly attacks on people’s wives(and I don’t agree with attacking Draper’s wife either before you ask = he however is fair game.) Politics is a dirty affair and if you start to stir up muck expect to get some back . People are starting to link ithis affair with Gordon Brown – despite his denials did he NOT know what his closest lieuntenant was up to ? If not why not ? I beg to differ sir. I am happy to attack Guido when he is wrong – pizza for IDF – and I hope to be constructive on sites by often posting contrarian views. But in the main we have had a sleazy Tory government in the 90’s replaced by a typical tax and spend corrupt Labour government who should be ashamed that they have destroyed people’s hope that was invested in them. They have fucked our country and all they care about is clinging on to power at any cost. Perhaps its because blogs allow people to speak freely that they frighten the custodians of our votes. Perhaps they are afraid that when we open our eyes we’ll happily see the lot of them ( all sides!) hanging from lampposts by piano wire.

It is cruel and despicable to lie to so many people for so long and then to blame the messenger when you are found out. I hate no-one. I hate corruption, self seeking, cant and hypocrisy. The government’s much-criticised cut in VAT is working and has led to a big boost in consumer spending, according to a leading economics consultancy.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) says that the cut, which took effect on 1 December 2008, has led to £2.1bn of extra sales.

The centre says the growth in retail spending is “remarkable”.

It argues that the temporary cut of 2.5%, which expires in January 2010, should be extended for six months.

“The figures are clear; the VAT cut is working,” the CEBR said.

    McGuire-Hater says:

    OK, let’s set the scatology and juvenilia aside fro one moment (fun though it is). This episode (“Smeargate”, or whatever) is the ultimate manifestation of the personalization of politics which began with Blair and has snowballed ever since. Opinion polls over the past five years have shown an alarmingly increasing trend towards the purely/viscerally personal response on the part of the average voter (if there is such a thing). Policies don’t matter any more – it is, perhaps, 20 years since they did – and the public political response is conditioned almost entirely by subjective, intuitive, ill-considered and often thoroughly unjust and groundless “gut reactions” to politicians and so-called political events (on this scale, there is no longer anything capable of being referred to as a purely political event). Thus, one might say that politics has been reduced to a sort of lowest common denominator public morality contest – expenses abuse: yuk; porngate: ho ho, but couldn’t really give a shit; smearing people/their wives on purley personal grounds: yuk, Irag/Iran/Afghanistan: couldn’t give a shit; credit crunch/bailut/Northenr Rok/RBS: couldn’t give a shit; Sir Fred’s pension: couldn’t realy give a shit but suppose I should pretend to be outraged;

You don’t have to WRITE the libelllous material to be liable for it, just by repeating it you can be in the frame.

And (read carefully) he wanted to manage the story. Dunno what you think, but I think he;s a bit of a fox (in the wily sense) at this stuff, don’t you Santi?

I mean, he hath shown the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 news and Sky how journalism is done. He scented a story, cultivated the contacts, got the evidence, put out the teaser, wrote the story and put out his material where it would be most effective.

McBride gone, Brown in a stuttering panic, dents in the wall in no 10. Now then. All the assorted useless hacks above get a lot of cash, some if it ours, extorted without our say so to not find this kind of frankly fucking scandalous stuff out. I suspect some in Fleet Street, the fifth estate, the state funded broadcaster knew that this stuff was out there. They chose not to tell us that McBride was making up stories on out quid and character assassinating innocent people on the way.

Guido is also (I suspect) playing a long game here. We do not know what more he has. He has FOI requests in and if what no 10 says does not tally with what he has, there should be hides nailed to the Whitehall pavemen to us to spit on en passent.

Way back in February, I posted this:

I remember the last days of US President Richard Nixon. His face was wracked with agony and ravaged by his ignominious descent into moral decay. To me, he was Dorian Gray without the benefit of a painting in the attic.

Nixon, however, had some mitigating traits as a leader. His inaugural speech was monolithic.

During it he uttered these words:

We have found ourselves rich in goods, but ragged in spirit; reaching with magnificent precision for the moon, but falling into raucous discord on earth.
We are caught in war, wanting peace. We are torn by division, wanting unity. We see around us empty lives, wanting fulfillment. We see tasks that need doing, waiting for hands to do them.
To a crisis of the spirit, we need an answer of the spirit.
To find that answer, we need only look within ourselves.

Gordon Brown showed no such idealism in his first days. Indeed if he heeded these words things might have been different. But he started low and went lower. He is a haunted man, his visage scarred with unbeautiful obsessions. As Oscar Wilde wrote of the eponymous hero:

“The consciousness of being hunted, snared, tracked down, had begun to dominate him” (The Picture of Dorian Gray)

Here is a portrait of a man in decay, a moribund leader who is about to implode. Does it remind you of anyone?
