What the BBC Wouldn’t Let Guido Broadcast

Guido is on the BBC’s Daily Politics later today.  Originally the idea was that Guido would record a short video about Draper and Labour’s approach to blogging.  Guido’s view is essentially that LabourList is failing because it is just a spin and propaganda site, not a genuine independent initiative discussing openly the future direction of the Labour Party.  It is a top-down tool of Labour’s spin machine.

The second charge is that Draper is the wrong person to run a blog.  Good blogs succeed because they have good content and an authentic voice.  Draper is a shyster who is the embodiment of  New Labour’s spin and sleaze.  His supposed personal rebirth as a morally reformed psychotherapist is just spin.  He hasn’t changed one little bit.  He still spins his credentials just like he did in the past.

Guido went to California last week to get to the bottom of the story, what Guido discovered was shocking.  Guido has already revealed that Draper didn’t go to the prestigious Berkeley campus of the University of California, instead he went to a small institute, based in a house in the suburbs of Berkeley.

What Guido found out in Berkeley was even more surprising.  Guido has established as fact from reliable sources that in March 2004 Derek Draper was asked to leave the third year of a Clinical Psychology (PsyD) programme normally lasting 5 years.  Further that in April 2004 it was determined that he would not receive an M.A. from the Wright Institute.  So how does Derek come to have an M.A.?  Why was he expelled? Did he win an appeal?  Is it all the same old Derek with the same old spin?

The BBC say that this is off topic and they didn’t want to run a video from Guido on this subject.  Guido thinks it gets to the core of Draper’s character.  He spins the truth and you just can’t get away with that inauthenticity online.  Draper just isn’t the real deal.

Apologies for the sound quality – this is a rough excerpt from the video that Guido wanted to show on the Daily Politics:

        Guido didn’t do well enough:

        a) work out;
        b) dress better;
        c) actually point out that the far majority of Labourlist is brown-nosing, and that any dissenting viewpoints are trivial, and more emphatically that Draper is a pathological spinner. There should have been a question about what Labourlist thinks about Gordon Brown.

The first thing I noticed was a blogger that looked like a fat nerd, possibly living in his mother’s basement, against an eloquent, well dressed chap (who I know happens to be a complete bastard).

@388 – Spot on. Draper really is a greasy weasel of the worst kind. Note how he blatantly avoids the question, instead trying to make some smarmy comment about Guido & desperately (and really badly, IMO) trying to plug his valueless labourlisp webshite.

I have to say as someone approaching this argument for the first time I think draper came off better on The Daily Politics. ‘Guido’ or whatever you call him seemed a little pathetic ‘I hate politicians’….erm, just for the sake of it? There are some totally polarised to each other so if you hate so many different positions on any given spectrum it appears that you’re just hating it for the sake of it with no ideological basis.

Hmmmm, what are the relative viewing stats for Draperlist/labour list and this site?
Could it be that this site is far more popular and free to all opinions, is that why you hate this site?
Does Draper allow a full range of postings and opinions OR does he actually only want the partyline and opinions that match his own?
See, heres the thing mr slik, socialists/leftists/Marxist sites like Draperlist are as exiting as watching paint dry and they as annoying as listening to Jackboot Smith lecture us about civil liberties, the comrades only want to hear how glorious socialism is and how the commissars of newlabour are heroes and wonderful human beings, its why Draperlist is about as popular as a bad case of facial herpes!

Come on explain!!

The real people Labour helped were the likes of Sir Fred Goodwin (and who gave him that honour I wonder?). Fred the Shred was clearly a far better negotiator than Lord Myners (and who gave him that honour I wonder?). Myners was had over. Done deal and all legal and above board. Nu Labour all over. Suppress the facts. Broadcast lies.

That’s why they’re so enraged about Dan Hannan’s comments. The Maximum idiot put himself in a position where he had to squirm through a tirade of inconvenient truths instead of having 400 paid baboons shrieking abuse any time (say) Cameron tries to make a point.

And worse than that it’s out there. The yanks have got hold of it. I don’t doubt the entire English speaking world knows about it. And Brown’s 5-day mission to kiss arses and beg for support for his fucked-up plan to print exponential amounts of money forever, like Mugabe’s, is doomed to failure.

Still he’ll have some nice photographs shaking hands with real, elected world leaders around the world for his memoirs. Which is what it’s all about. He’s just trying to fit in the ten years of global hob-nobbing that Blair did into the final three of the Labour terror.

You’re right, anyone can call themselves a therapist and start ‘treating’ people. You could say that Guido is a kind of therapist too – leading people away from their unhappy illusions and anti-social habits – like being members of the the Labour Party. He does it out of love, no really, he’s the only one who cares enough about Draper to bring about a healing crisis (read: Draper sacked and told to fuck off forever ). Hopefully, having rid himself of his fantasies and false goals, he will get a proper job and do some good in society. I still (sob) have hope for him.

    verb
1 [ intrans. ] expend money with the expectation of achieving a profit or material result by putting it into financial schemes, shares, or property, or by using it to develop a commercial venture : getting workers to invest in private pension funds | [ trans. ] the company is to invest $12 million in its new manufacturing site.

What return do you expect from what you term ‘investment’?

This was a local councillor, elected by a few thousand at most. Hannan, as a Euro MP was elected by hundreds of thousands.

Guido: Good to see some follow-thru on this story. So is Draper an AAP-certified psychotherapist then or not? And does his AAP cetification allow him to practice in the UK (some UK medical qualifications are not fully recognized in the US and vice-versa – sometimes you have to do 6 months of additional training)? This is a serious point, as this guy (who obviously needs therapy himself – he clearly has a problem with his own inadequacy) is probably treating people with real problems.

Also which Uni did he get his economics degree from Manchester Met/Uni/UMIST as he refuses to clarify that also!

    • 266
      gimpy says:

Draper is not certified nor accredited by any American Psychotherapy body. However, his M.A., which does seem to be real if awarded in controversial circumstances, combined with his supervised counseling experience allows him to practice as a member of the BACP in Britain. Should it be discovered that he lacks supervised experience the consequences could be interesting.

        tenpin says:

Hi Gimpy, This is concerning that a failed psychotherapist (who was probably awarded his MA for jabbing his finger at the Dean or by a back-hander) is allowed to practice in this country (good to know that stringent checks are made). He gets to treat people who are in a vunerable position (and probably isn’t worthy of the acredation he has received).

I would presume if Draper was awarded his MA in the US this was a AAP certified course so he should be AAP certified (and therefore on the AAP register). I would wager that being a member of the BACP means that he just pays an annual fee.

When I got my PhD I was given a certificate – maybe Derek should take his MA certificate off the wall, scan it, and produce it on the web (if he does have a certificate – a real one and not something he purchased off the web).

      • 472
        gimpy says:

tenpin the AAP requirements for membership are stringent. No conclusion can be drawn regarding Draper’s lack of membership because he may lack the qualifications, the experience and does not practice in America. I wouldn’t get too bothered about this.
If you are concerned about the lax standards of regulation of psychotherapy in Britain that would allow Draper to practice then you should consider the fact that even with the controversy over his qualifications he is still amply qualified to practice. There are a lot of people with lesser qualifications charging good money and boasting of BACP membership. Draper is far from the least able of them.

Ok – he’s got issues with Guido and vice-versa(excellent “bitch-spat by the way)and at one stage Jo Coburn looked ready to spank both of you or at the very least give Draper a clip round the ear but why did the BBC allow Draper to sit in through ALL the programme whilst Huhne and yourself were only allowed a few minutes each ? Not really impartial allowing Draper to mouth off his views largely unchallenged(although at one stage “Brillo” told him to “Shut up Derek(I thought he might have followed that up with “he’s not worth it Derek – leave it) and then to cap it all we had a regal visitation from “Dame Polly” when Jo Coburn had promised the viewers that after the item on local press you would be back for Round 2 with Draper. Where did you go ? Did you have a lunch date or were you getting a fast taxi from BBC Centre before Draper could give you slap or more likely Damian McBride – can’t imagine Draper daring to try fisticuffs – judging by the shape he’s in – one in the “guts” and he’d go down like a stone(not that anyone should resort to violence of course however much the urge is there)Political debate only – even if Draper & Co think we’re all foul-mouthed,racist,ulra-right wing bigots

Who on earth is going to read a self help book writen by a bloke who looks like he sleeps ruff? You scruffy Hoon?

I tried to send this as a link to Jon Snow via the C4 website. I failed miserably, after several attempts. I wonder if there is some form of censor software that prevents negative comments being posted.
Essentially, I was trying to say that, having watched the Derek Draper performance tonight (26.3.09), I was disappointed that Jon Snow failed to challenge him about his views and more to the point, his truthfullness regarding his qualifications.
Seems my current view that you can’t believe anyone about anything, is justified.

    Duncan says:

I saw the debate, I can see why the BBC didn’t want to get into the qualifications thing, time limits, no big deal. I have to say that you didn’t exactly inspire me but at least you didn’t come across like a complete c*ck like Draper. People like him give labour a bad name and I’m centre-left politically. By the way, you should start using your real name, at the very least ‘Guido Fawkes, a blog by …….’ or something. The pseudonym thing is a bit nerdy…

  263. 489

And the Devil created Labour says:

“I was disappointed that Jon Snow failed to challenge him about his views and more to the point, his truthfullness regarding his qualifications.”

You should have less faith in the chances of any nasty leftofascist (especially one as nasty, left and fascist as Snow) being objective when it comes to the many and myriad transgressions of fellow nasty leftofascists, then you would not be disappointed. The preferred leftofascist options in these situations are “lie”, “spin” or “ignore it”, transmitted throughout the leftofascist hive by scratching each others insectoid backs.

    Tra fucking la.

Nice to see you seem to have lost a few pounds Guido. However your dress sense has not improved at all. What is that all about? Please do yourself a favor and take some advice about the clobber. If there is only one thing left that The Americans still respect, that is a cool dresser. Remember when traveling abroad you represents your nation as well as yourself. The Irish people should be ashamed of you.

The important question however is, have you found any decent beer yet? The USA actually has plenty, if you know where to look.

  267. 495

Guido, further to your expose I have realised something. There are three distinct, separate parts to the flexible friend that is Derek Draper’s CV.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING : I have an M.A. in clinical psychology and spent three years in Berkeley, California, training full time to be a psychotherapist. I have worked with adolescents in a community school and with children and adults in a large counselling centre. During my training I undertook over 1500 hours of supervised clinical work.

Claim 1) He says he has an MA in clinical psychology.
Claim 2) He says he in Berkley, California.
Claim 3) He trained full time in Berkley to be a psychotherapist.

OK, he now points out that he studied IN and not AT Berkley.
Claims 1 and 2 do not have to match. He trained full time in Berkley. This was at the Wright Institute. And he spent three years of a five year course before being expelled. And he was not granted an MA.

But he claims that he has got an MA. But not at the Wright Institute, it would seem.

So. Where did he obtain his MA? Could he count the three years work he did, but got expelled for, at another college? Would another college accept an expelled student? (That would depend on why they were expelled…)

Of Labourlists funding,he said it was transparent, and a list of donors was published annually, and no he did not get funds from the Labour party. When pressed he did say he had union money, but insisted that people could look at the published list published annually… except of course that Labourlist has not been around for long enough to publish such a list yet.So in the same sort of spinning that has it that Derek has a qualification in psychology from Berkeley* he then attacked Guido for his funding. As Guido had no money, where did he get the money to set up his blog, he must be in someones pocket!Well, this just shows how ignorant Derek is. Guido´s blog, and indeed Iain Dale´s and mine cost nothing to set up. Not a penny other than my time. You see, the problem is that Derek just does not get the Internet at all.*That assumes he has any qualifications at all in anything. If Derek Draper seeks to do work for you perhaps you should ask to see the qualifications he claims to have, and then go and check with the institution the paper claims issued them. He certainly did not study at Berkeley campus of the University of California. Guido has this. [...]

    Guido,

[Geeky filming rant] Can you put a screen up or something when you’re filming to stop gusts of wind causing the hissing on the mic?

Alternatively, stand in a different position out of the wind. I’d recommend doing some short takes and playing them back to make sure that there isn’t any wind noise where you’re standing.

If you’re not using a separate uni-directional mic, I’d recommend using one to cut out unwanted noise coming from the side. I don’t know what kit you’re using, but a handheld or radio mic with a 60 degree angle might do the trick too. [/geeky filming rant]
