Unconfirmed: David Campbell Bannerman To Defect to Tories

Apparently the UKIP MEP, and sore leadership lose, is about to jump ship back to the Tories. ConHome have got wind of the same rumour.

UKIP sources weren’t exactly signing his praises yesterday afternoon, and he’s not answering his mobile….

UPDATE: DCB said he wouldn’t work under Farage at the UKIP leadership hustings. Apparently there was talk of booting him down the candidates list at the next European elections.

UPDATE II: Talk of DCB is holding a press conference in an hour…

Totty Watch: Get Your Votes Out For The Lads

UKIP have come up with a novel way of appealing to the voters of Bangor. Northern Irish model, Laura Lacole has lent her assets to their North Down candidate in the Assembly elections, Dr Fred McGlade, and UKIP Deputy Leader Paul Nuttall MEP:

Guido expects a strong swing.

Ed Says No to Nigel

Yesterday’s Yes2AV launch was conspicuously Clegg-less, but he wasn’t the only leader missing. Despite probably being the campaigns most useful asset in getting through to real people outside of the beltway, Guido hears that Nigel Farage and UKIP are a little miffed that they were left out in the cold. It was alll smiles with Caroline Lucas from the Greens, so it’s not as if smaller parties were a ruled out.  A Yes campaign source said the decision didn’t come from them and it was Miliband’s office that refused to share a platform. Guido has put it to them, but no answer as of yet…

The Barnsley Bombshell

Dan Jarvis is heading to Westminster as Labour’s second MP to have served in the army.  His new job was guaranteed from the moment he was selected, but the race behind him has left some stunned faces this morning. The total meltdown of the LibDems in May is well on course with Clegg left in a humiliating 6th place behind an indy and the BNP. And down £500.

UKIP sources were pleasantly surprised when Guido spoke to them last night, but there is no denying in the light of day that coming second is a major moment for them. Many a Tory ChihuahuaConservatives In their Heads, Ukip AHeart, will be heartened by this result, they were hardly expected to get excited by the utterly uninspiring Tory candidate. It’s fascinating to see the Labour Eurosceptic vote is growing too. According to pollsters Survation, who predicted the LibDem collapse and UKIP rise, 29% of UKIPs growth came from Labour voters switching:

Issues like votes for prisoners seem to be playing well for UKIP, driving new recruits to their cause. More decrees from Europe must be highlighted and pushed. It’s clearly playing well.

While it is embarrassing for a sitting PM to be beaten by a minor party, made up of many voters he feels should be supporting him, there will be cheers from the blues lower down the ladder with this result.

UKIP MEP Given Das Boot

Godfrey Bloom has been thrown out of a session of the European Parliament for shouting“Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer” (One People, One Empire, One Leader) as German Social Democrat MEP Martin Schultz was making a speech. Video to follow…

Bloom refused to apologise and went on to call the leader of the socialist group in the parliament an “undemocratic fascist” to the waiting the press pack.

Rule one. Don’t mention zee war.

UPDATE: UKIP just press released this:

“Schulz is an unrepentant Euro nationalist and a socialist. He wants one currency, one EU state, one EU people. Already the Euro nationalists have one currency, one flag, one anthem, a foreign service and are creating a home office for Justice. They are creating here one Parliament with one executive and one EU citizenry. The EU Commission have already taken control of the economies of Ireland and Greece, no doubt others to follow. These Euro Nationalists are a danger to democracy. These people are fanatics. People have got to wake up to this fact. My father as a Spitfire pilot fought for freedom against Nazi domination of Europe. As an MEP I will fight against the destruction of democracy across Europe.”

Shock…

Farage Fights Foes For UKIP Leadership

As one thrilling leadership race climaxes, another begins. That’s right, UKIP are gearing up to find a decent challenger to stop the second coming of Farage. However if the race so far is anything to go by, the plane crash survivor will be back in control of the party. Sadly it seems climate change pioneer Lord Monkton has decided not stand – something that would have infuriated the left.

Economist Tim Congdon, an unsuccessful UKIP PPC has allegedly been pressuring Farage’s supporters to “let someone else have a go”, but he might have to up his game some what if his retro nineties website is anything to go by. The money is very much on Farage.

UKIP Leadership Race

The race has begun to succeed Lord Pearson as leader of UKIP. He has amused political observers with his candid honesty. Not a strategy for success in politics.

Nigel Farage is favourite, though one wonders if he is really up for it given his health. He hasn’t said he will run for sure, yet punters still make him the runaway favourite. The rest of the likely runners include Christopher Monckton, the leading global warming sceptic and former adviser to Maggie. David Campbell Bannerman is a policy guy, former Tory SpAd and latterly a spinner before getting elected as an MEP.

Gerard Batten is another MEP and former London mayoral candidate, Spanish Marta Andreasen is the EU auditor turned UKIP MEP.

Guido has put a few quid on Monckton on the grounds that the outsider has fewer internal UKIP enemies and UKIPpers do like exotic characters…

UKIP Bus Stolen

No, really. Police say you can’t miss it…

Etonian Political Monopoly

If Eton is a political conspiracy rather than merely a school, it is doing quite well.  It boasts nineteen former PMs as well as three old boys in the current Tory shadow cabinet, plus of course the probable next PM.  It’s clearly still the establishment’s choice, though there was a time when people questioned whether another Old Etonian could ever become Prime  Minister again.  Fettes has since lost its grip on Downing Street.

Last week Lord Pearson OE was elected leader of UKIP.   Guido’s drinking buddy Chris Mounsey OE (of Devil’s Kitchen fame) was this weekend elected leader of the  Libertarian Party. Floreat Etona indeed…

Serendipitous Euro-Timing

Cameron gave one firm promise during his leadership campaign – that he would lead the Tories out of the EPP by Christmas 2006. That turned into 2009. At the time Guido thought it a telling breach of promise, in retrospect it looks like clever politics.

A largely united eurosceptic Tory party is going to finally make the break with the federalist EPP and take other like-minded parties with it into a euro-conservative grouping. This will enthuse the rank and file, make good Dave’s promise and undermine UKIP and Libertas, all in good time to make an impact on the June Euro elections. Labour will be looking to highlight splits – unless Clarke breaks his word they are unlikely to find any of significance.

So long as the Tories have the company of other governing parties from across Europe they will have succeeded.

Spink : I’m Not Joining UKIP

Less than a month ago Bob Spink emailed Nadine Dorries to say why it was nonsense that he would be joining UKIP:

This morning he did just that…

UKIP Handbags Swinging

Nigel Farage is threatening to sue the Sunday Times over the claim that he employed his student son, paying him out of EU funds. He admits to employing his wife on the EU gravy train but totally denies any gravy splashing on the boy.

Fingers are being pointed at Roger Knapman, the former UKIP leader, as the source of the story. The word is that he was on the phone to UKIP donors demanding Farage should be ousted on Saturday night. Cui bono?

Politicians are Better Off In the EU

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the Better Off Out campaign is holding a Better Off IN reception (junket) tonight at the Old Bank of England from 7 until closing time. The theme is that politicians, not the people of Europe, are better off in the EU.

Quote of the Day

Responding to Corbyn’s statement that the US should have arrested ISIS leader, al-Baghdadi, John Mann bluntly tweeted:

Baghdadi blew himself up with a suicide belt. An arrest might have been slightly difficult in these circumstances.”
