Villiers: Brexit Being Diluted
Brexit Minister: We’re Not Backsliding

Theresa Villiers expresses the concerns of Brexiteers that Number 10 is shifting away from a clean Brexit towards permanent alignment with the EU:

But Brexit minister Martin Callanan insists the UK will have the freedom to diverge in future:

If we don’t, what is the point of Brexit?

Corbyn: Requisition Luxury Properties

Corbyn tells Marr he would “take over” “luxury, glossy, glistening” empty properties owned by rich foreigners. A problem which studies show is greatly exaggerated and over-simplifies the housing crisis. Remember this would be a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights, of which Corbyn told Marr a Labour government would remain a part…

Corbyn Lies About His Support For Iran

Corbyn told Marr he had accepted money from the Iranian regime “a very long time ago” – it was 2012 – and that he stopped because of the way they treated the Green movement – that was in 2009, he carried on taking their cash and praising their government for years after. Marr really should have pinned him down on this, Jezza is straight up telling porkies…

McDonnell: I’m Not Sorry for “Lynch” Esther Comments – But Don’t Play Tape Back To Me

John McDonnell has again refused to apologise for calling Esther McVey a “stain on humanity” and repeating that she should be “lynched”. The Shadow Chancellor was asked to apologise to McVey on Marr this morning but refused – worth remembering he also refused to at the time, contrary to his defence this morning. Marr threatened to play back the audio. A guilty McDonnell replied:

“No we don’t need to, I know exactly what was on it.”

Bewilderingly, McDonnell was then let off the hook – the audio was not played.

Here it is:

Hard man McDonnell can dish it out but can’t take it…

Macron: French “Probably” Would Have Voted to Leave EU

French President Emmanuel Macron admits the French people would “probably” have voted to leave the European Union had they been allowed a referendum. #DespiteFrexit…

Bolton: I Won’t Quit, UKIP Can’t Pay for Leadership Contest

Embattled UKIP leader Henry Bolton says he won’t quit over the Jo Marney affair. Speaking on Peston, he revealed a leadership contest would not be “financially viable” for the party. Bolton warned UKIP’s NEC against passing a motion of no confidence in him:

“If the NEC goes down the road of months of infighting… then the reality is the party is probably over.”

Crunch meeting later today…

Truss: We Can’t Undo Worboys Decision

Pressure on UKIP’s Bolton to Quit or Dump Jo Marney

Pressure building on badger-chasing UKIP leader Henry Bolton after the Mail on Sunday splashed racist messages about Meghan Markle from his new girlfriend Jo Marney. UKIP Chairman Paul Oakden told the Sunday Politics Bolton has “difficult decisions to make”, signalling he should either resign or dump the 25-year-old topless model. Meanwhile, UKIP MEP Bill Etheridge has called for Bolton to resign. Which would you choose?

Corbyn Won’t Condemn McDonnell For Calling Esther “Stain on Humanity”

Jeremy Corbyn’s claim to stand for a “kinder, gentler” politics was once again exposed as a sham this morning as he refused to condemn his MPs for using inflammatory and hateful language. The Labour leader failed to condemn Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell for calling Tory minister Esther McVey a “stain on humanity”. Moments earlier Corbyn confirmed there would be no special ‘respect pledge’ for Labour candidates after Tory Chairman Brandon Lewis announced the Conservatives are launching the measure. Remember McDonnell also “joked” about Esther McVey being “lynched”

Over on BBC One’s Sunday Politics, Labour’s Barry Gardiner also refused to condemn McDonnell, saying only: “it’s not language I would use”.

Earlier in his Peston on Sunday interview, Corbyn again failed to rule out the possibility of a second referendum on EU membership. He also said he does not consider the special relationship with the United States is Britain’s most important bilateral relationship. New year, same old Jezza…

Lewis: Justice Secretary Doing “Everything He Can to Make Sure Worboys Stays Behind Bars”

Doesn’t look like Worboys is coming out any time soon. Good for Gauke.

Fraser Burns Polly

Zinger from Fraser Nelson as Polly Toynbee went after Toby Young’s record on free schools:

Polly: “He wanted to create a school for his kids.”

Fraser: “Yes, it’s better than sending them private like some columnists I could mention.”

Remember Polly sent two of her children private. Zing…

May: No Vote on Fox-Hunting

Another Labour MP Says They Can’t Be Friends With a Tory

“Could you have a Conservative as a friend?”

“No.”

Labour MP Mike Amesbury, who has a cat called Marx and a dog called Corbyn, tells Pienaar he can’t be friends with a Tory. Labour really spoiling us with the calibre of their new intake.

UPDATE: Tory MP Andrew Percy doesn’t want to be Mike’s friend anyway:

“This is yet another deeply worrying example of the divisive hate at the heart of Corbyn’s Labour Party. Politics works best when people can reach out beyond party lines and form friendships. The increasingly tribal nature of Labour MPs is what is helping to fuel the hate and personal attacks we have seen in British politics of late.”

Watson Says Second Referendum Possible An Hour After Diane Rules It Out

Diane Abbott, today: Rules out second referendum

Marr’s Review of the Year

Diane Forgets She Backed Second Referendum

Diane Abbott tells Marr Labour has never backed a second referendum, only for Marr to read a quote from her two weeks ago… backing a second referendum. “We’ve never supported a second referendum.” “Well you did…”

Quote of the Day

Jacob Rees-Mogg on Number 10’s customs partnership:

“It’s completely cretinous… it’s a betrayal of good sense, I cannot understand why government is faffing around with this system. I’m on the same side as Mr Barnier on this, god bless him.”
