Liberty is on Lockdown

*Terms & Conditions apply, this is a time limited offer.

A snap YouGov poll suggests two-thirds of the population think they will easily cope and there is 93% support for the lockdown. People are afraid and when they are afraid they want security over liberty. This is not a surprise…

Majority of the Public Have Confidence in Boris

Contrary to what you might expect if you only read Guardian columnists suffering from *BDS or spend too much time on Twitter, the public are in the majority confident that the Prime Minister is making the right decisions when it comes to Coronavirus. Despite Nicola Sturgeon’s grandstanding and Sadiq Khan’s opportunism neither of them command anywhere as near as much confidence. As ever, the twitterati and chattering classes are not reflective of Britain…

Tories Reach Highest Poll Standing Since 1983

Boris Johnson has now matched Margaret Thatcher’s polling hight of 52% of the country backing the Conservatives. Lady T reached that hight in three polls – one in October 1987 and two in May 1983. A new poll by Ipsos MORI, the fieldwork for which concluded on Monday, has found that Boris rose by five points since the General Election to hit 52%. This is despite the same poll finding 69% of the country believes the economic condition of the country to worsen over the next year…

Boris’ personal satisfaction matches that of his party, at 52% (another rise of five points) while just 38% of people are dissatisfied with his performance (down by six points). Jeremy Corbyn, on the other hand, sees satisfaction at 19% and his dissatisfied rating drop slightly to 68%. Yet again stressing that Twitter and Britain are not the same thing…

Tories Twice as Likely to Have Sexy Self-Isolation

In polling questions Guido suspects respondents weren’t answering entirely truthfully, The Times have found that only 3% of people will bonk to pass the time while self-isolating; with Tories twice as likely than Labour or Lib Dems. Guido thinks some men are in for a disappointment, as 5% of them say they will, versus only 2% of women…

Employers won’t be too happy to see 32% of people plan on watching to television to pass the time, as opposed to only 17% who will ‘continue to work from home’. 6% claim they’ll take up gardening. Unfortunately for Corbyn, though, his self-isolation means he can’t go to his allotment…

The Times also find that despite the now-common scenes of empty supermarket shelves, 83% of people claim they haven’t purchased more supplies than they otherwise would have because of the virus outbreak.

Boris still has a slight net positive rating over his handling of Coronavirus – 39% saying he is up to the job versus 37% not – however the majority of people say the government has not responded fast enough and should have done more. Most starkly, 55% of people now say Coronavirus is the most important issue facing the country, with the NHS a distant second on 7%

Tories Polling at 50%

New Kantar polling published this morning has found that the Tories continue to surge upwards, hitting 50% for the first time in three years. As YouGov’s Chris Curtis points out, between the 2015 election and now, the Conservatives have polled at every single integer between 17% and 50%…

The poll, fieldwork for which continued to be carried out until Monday, also found that 47% of Brits think that the UK government is handling the Coronavirus outbreak very or fairly well, compared to 33% who think it is being handled very or fairly poorly. It remains to be seen if these numbers will hold as the virus spreads across the country…

On Brexit, the poll finds that “if the general economic situation turned out to be a lot worse after Brexit”, just 27% think the UK should consider re-joining, compared to 35% who think it should not. For all the good polling news for Boris, he’s still yet to overtake Margaret Thatcher’s polling peak of 52% in May 1983…
