Unhelpful polling for Reeves today, as a More in Common poll reveals the majority of Britons believe keeping taxes low should be the main priority in the upcoming painful budget. A whopping 53% think Reeves should avoid raising taxes, compared to 32% who think investing in public services is a priority. Just as Starmer warns that the budget will face the “harsh light of fiscal reality”…
Meanwhile, rumoured tax hikes are highly unpopular, with 55% opposing the scrapping of the £2 bus fare cap, decreasing pensioners’ personal allowances and unfreezing fuel duty. If Reeves unleashes her expected tax raids on Wednesday, expect “working people” – who apparently “know who they are” – to be unforgiving in the next election…
More in Common has been tracking Starmer’s net approval rating – it makes glum reading today for the PM. Starmer has suffered a rapid drop from his post-election high of 11 points in late July to -16 now. His lowest rating so far this year and almost a one point drop per day…
This approval rating is around the same level enjoyed by Sunak two months into his premiership. And Sunak didn’t have a landslide to buoy him…

Labour’s cronygate scandal appears to be cutting through: 53% think that Labour is “somewhat or very corrupt.” Reeves’ Winter Fuel Payment cut has 56% disapproval compared to 23% in favour. Starmer hasn’t got to the eye-popping -48 rating he scored in May 2021. There’s time yet…
While Tory MPs and plotters are tangled in their own messy affairs, it seems Tory voters aren’t exchanging vows of affection either. A new poll from More in Common finds that love does recognise barriers. Only 28% of 2019 Tory voters would cherish a marriage between a loved one and another Tory. Meanwhile, 39% of 2019 Tory voters would love their friends and family to walk down the aisle with a Labourite. Perhaps the Sunak’s cameo in Grazia will be enough to sway hearts that tying the knot with a Tory isn’t so bad…
