PM Won’t Rule Out Another Lockdown

Tory  power couple MPs Esther McVey and Philip Davies managed to secure a sit-down interview with the PM, set to be broadcast in full during their show tomorrow, in which the PM says he cannot rule out another lockdown. Guido reckons the PM can announce whatever he likes, the public has declared the pandemic over and after Partygate may no longer listen to new rules…

“I want to avoid any such thing happening again, and I can’t rule out some, Esther, I can’t say we wouldn’t be forced to do non-pharmaceutical interventions again of the kind we did.

I think it would be irresponsible of any leader in any democracy to say they’re going to rule out something that would save lives… there could be a new variant – more deadly – there could be a variant that affects children badly that we really need to contain, I’m not going to take any options off the table.”

The interview is a real coup for McVey, who both managed to secure an interview with the PM and avoided doxxing his mobile phone number

Mark Drakeford Privately Calls for Total Christmas Lockdown

While furious Tories push back against Boris’s shift to Plan B, senior Labour figures want restrictions to go even further. This morning, Angela Rayner said “The government are not going far enough as far as I’m concerned”. What exact restrictions to Labour want therefore?

Perhaps Welsh Labour leader and First Minister Mark Drakeford has let slip the party’s true desires: Guido learns that last night he privately demanded a complete lockdown between Christmas and New Year during a phone call between Michael Gove, First Ministers and the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish Secretaries of State. All while deaths and hospitalisations in Wales remain relatively stable…

Reacting to the absurd demand, a government source privy to the call accused the First Minister of making “Ebenezer Scrooge look like Santa Claus”:

“On just a limited amount of data, the knee jerk reaction from Welsh Government is to cancel everything and lock everyone away. How long can that approach continue?

More businesses will go bust and more jobs will be lost, but it’s no surprise that Welsh Labour don’t care about that given their economic track record.”

Drakeford has already said publicly that Wales is at “a perilous moment” with Omicron. It looks like this might be his next step.

UPDATE: Drakeford’s press office responds:

“While there is increasing concern about the omicron variant, we do not anticipate making significant changes to the existing regulations at the moment.”

Co-conspirators will note the phrase “at the moment”, and the lack of any attempt at a denial…

Boris Extends Lockdown by Four Weeks to July 19

Boris notes exceptions, including weddings and funerals – as expected – will go ahead with the next stage of unlocking (I.e. limits scrapped). The trial audiences at the Euros and other sports games will also continue. Boris keen to stress that July 19 really will be the “terminus date” for lockdown…

The PM also references a further level of unlocking regarding theatre performances. Andrew Lloyd-Webber will keenly await the details on that one…

[WATCH] Burnham Bashes Boris Over Bolton Botch

Amid the confusion over the Covid restrictions in areas with surging cases of the Indian variant (Bolton, Kirklees, Bedford, Burnley, Leicester, Hounslow and North Tyneside), Andy Burnham was keen to jump in front of a camera to restart his war with Whitehall this afternoon, saying:

“There will be a concern out there today that this is a local lockdown by stealth…or to the reintroduction of the tier system…we do not wish to see any return to local lockdowns, we do not believe that they worked. We believe that the situation in 2021, the context, is different to the one that we had in 2020. And we believe that that should be made clear as well…it’s important that this is cleared up, and cleared up very quickly indeed…”

Burnham’s obviously never camera-shy, though to be fair, the new rules in these areas haven’t exactly been well-explained. Even local Tory MP Jake Berry claimed on Politics Live that he found out about the new guidance – to limit travel in the surging areas, including Berry’s own constituency – from the media rather than from government. According to Nadhim Zahawi, people living in these areas can still travel in and out, though the official government advice is to avoid it “unless it is essential.” Looks like the government wants to implement a voluntary local lockdown without the backlash of actually committing to one…

WATCH: Boris Denies ‘Bodies Pile High’ Comment

Boris has formally denied exclaiming he’d rather see bodies pile up in their thousands than put the UK into a third lockdown, as reported by the Mail this morning. His on-camera denial comes just after Peston claims at least three current No. 10 sources are aware of the PM saying the provocative statement:

“I am told he shouted it in his study just after he agreed to the second lockdown ‘in a rage’. The doors to the Cabinet room and outer office were allegedly open and supposedly a number of people heard. I am bothering to repeat this assertion about what the Prime Minister said because two eyewitnesses – or perhaps I should say ‘ear witnesses’ – have corroborated the Daily Mail’s account to me. Also these sources insist they did not brief the Mail, so that suggests there are three sources.”

Peston is also adamant in the same piece – providing reasonable anecdotal evidence – that his October lockdown source was not Dominic Cummings…

Government Threatens Harsher Measures Amid Policing Crackdown

Policing figures are swarming this morning’s airwaves as part of the Government’s new stick and stick approach to cracking down on Covid. Everyone from Cressida Dick to policing minister Kit Malthouse are appealing to the public to follow the rules, which are clearly not being as strictly adhered to as in March. To compound the tough enforcement message, briefing has found its way into papers about what could happen if the rules continue to be flouted. These include closing…

  • Schools to all pupils.
  • Nurseries.
  • Building sites.
  • Factories.
  • Playgrounds.
  • Launderettes.
  • Chiropractors.
  • Estate agents
  • Click-and-collect services.

Other threats doing the rounds include mandatory face masks outdoors and even a three metre rule. The message is obvious and paradoxical; “if you continue to not comply with the rules, we will introduce more rules”…
