An awkward moment this morning for all the lefty hacks and opposition MPs who’ve turned their noses at the government’s illegal migrant plans, as Denmark has announced it is also now outlining plans to send adult asylum seekers to Rwanda. The Archbishop of Canterbury will need to have a lie-down…
In a statement released this morning, Danish Immigration Minister Mattias Tesfaye confirmed the country has entered discussions with the Rwandan government:
“Our dialogue with the Rwandan government includes a mechanism for the transfer of asylum seekers… [the deal will] ensure a more dignified approach than the criminal network of human traffickers that characterises migration across the Mediterranean today.”
Denmark is far from the first European entity backing Priti’s move. In 2019 then-European Commissioner Neven Mimica also announced a similar plan for the EU:
Pete Wishart, the leading SNP MP for Perth and North Perthshire, posted in support of Denmark over England just before last night’s barnstorming semi-final. Not a great night for him then…
In a Facebook post that has attracted over 500 likes, Wishart wrote:
“I just love Denmark. It was the first country outside Scotland that took Runrig to its heart and we’ve had #1 albums and a fantastic loyal audience. Play festivals and gigs from Skagen to Tonder and enjoyed myself far too much there. Only one team for me #DEN”.
Guido wonders what excuse Wishart will concoct for supporting Italy in Sunday’s final…
Contrast this with the sentiments of the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney, who wished England “good luck” just before the match:
Good luck to England 🏴 tonight. Best team in tournament so far, we wish our neighbours well!! 🇮🇪🏴 pic.twitter.com/y9TKxIFC5j

Of course, there are 4 or 5 England players whose heritage means they could play for Ireland…
It is barely a year since Boris would unconvincingly excuse his lateness for lunch with some waffle about the difficulties of locking his bike up. Guido can recall stumbling out of a pub on Whitehall in the evening to almost collide with Boris on a bike. Nowadays when protestors aren’t throwing themselves in front of his motorcade he has for security reasons to jog round the garden inside Buckingham Palace for exercise. How Boris must wish for the freedoms still enjoyed by the Dutch PM Mark Rutte…
Denmark has warned the EU to stop playing “games” over the Brexit divorce bill and has urged Brussels to begin talks on trade. Finance minister Kristian Jensen says:
“In any political negotiations, there is not enough time, not enough money, not enough this, not enough that. This is part of the game. Because what we are dealing with here is not rocket science… We are now on the same page … In my view it is rather important we get into a more close and more speedy process on concluding some of the issues… The UK is a great trading partner of EU27, a strong ally in defence and security, so we need to find out how we can have a good and close relationship post-Brexit… it is important that both sides are ready and able to move on. Because otherwise we get into an endgame where things are very precious on time and therefore a greater risk of making decisions that are not welcome.”
Helpful reminder to ultra-Remainers over here that it is the EU who are not behaving reasonably…
