Peter Oborne On Drinking
“It may be relevant to note that many of the greatest politicians have been very heavy drinkers. Winston Churchill springs to mind. Countless American presidents have hit the bottle early in the day. They were none the worse for it. Meanwhile, some of the most catastrophic politicians have been teetotallers. George W. Bush, the worst US president of the last 150 years, is one notorious example. Hitler didn’t drink. Politicians who never drink have too much time on their hands. They often use it to brood and plot. The ability to handle a drink is almost always a good sign in politicians. It gives them humanity. It stops them from taking themselves too seriously.”
