Wera Hobhouse: Poor People Want To Be Told What To Do By Posh People

It appears the LibDems have entirely given up trying to win the votes of anyone who isn’t middle-class and university-educated. Last Thursday Bath MP Wera Hobhouse went off-script and came out with remarkable claim:

“This morning, a contributor on Radio 4 said that it is only ever posh people who say that the less fortunate people in our communities do not want to be told by posh people what to do, but in fact they do, or, at least, they want some responsible guidance.”

What is it about being married to the Eton-educated Hon. William Hobhouse, son of Baron Hobhouse of Woodborough, that makes Wera Benedicta von Reden think the deserving poor want to be told by her what to do…

Wera Hobhouse Bolsters 5G Conspiracy

A conspiratorial row about the baseless negative health effects of 5G masts proposed for erection in Bath has seen local LibDem MP Wera Hobhouse fan the flames of the tinfoil hat brigade. Local groups arguing to the council that the masts pose “a threat to health” have been bolstered by calls from Hobhouse for them to be listened to – despite, in the words of Digital Minister Matt Warman, there being “no credible scientific basis that 5G has an adverse impact on people’s health”. A year after trying to stop, Brexit Guido supposes she was desperate to find a new conspiracy cause to lose the plot over…

When confronted by the BBC, Wera claims she has finally conceded the masts are safe, however given “the widespread concern… [I] believe it may be worth applying a precautionary principle”. When Hobhouse says “widespread concern”, she means the total 300 objections from a city of 90,000 people…

Wera Hobhouse Ends LibDem Leadership Campaign After Ten Days

Just ten days after posting her leadership launch video, Bath MP Wera Hobhouse has dropped out of the race and endorsed Layla Moran. The contest now consists of just Moran and interim leader Ed Davey. Moran’s pitching herself as a non-London, hard-left choice compared to the metropolitan centrism of Davey. Hobhouse fired a parting shot at Davey in a statement to supporters, arguing against becoming a “London-centric” party – despite the Lib Dems losing one of their few London seats in December. 23rd June has proved to be a bad day for remainers yet again…

LibDems Out-Corbyn Corbyn

The LibDem gains in support in the 2019 general election, such as they were, came from Remainer Tories and in numbers twice as great from moderate Labour types turned off by Corbyn. Yet all three leadership contenders are currently running on platforms that even Islington would reject as being too left-wing.

Layla Moran is the most extreme, warning Keir Starmer he should be worried if she becomes the next LibDem leader, as she will move the party to their left and “be even more radical than Labour”. So far her policies include support for Universal Basic Income, withholding financial support for companies that use tax havens and – prepare to ‘yes and ho’ – scrap the Treasury in favour of a new “Department for Sustainability”The question is whether any specific policy proposal will encourage left-wing Labour voters to believe that the former austerity coalition party is the place for their next vote…

Wera Hobhouse’s manifesto reads like a love letter to Labour, saying the party shouldn’t stand “equally between right and left” given the biggest threat to liberalism “comes from the right”

“In the most recent election, we trained our fire equally at the Conservatives and Labour, even though Labour backed a People’s Vote, had a plan to address the climate crisis and wanted to invest in public services to deliver a more equal society.”

At least she’s learnt the lesson of Jo Swinson: “With eleven MPs we are not contenders for national government”…

Sir Ed Davey should be glad copyright law doesn’t apply to party policies, or Rebecca Long-Bailey would be suing him for his “Green Revolution” proposal, lifted straight from Corbyn’s 2019 manifesto – along with a £150 billion investment price tag. Davey only has one further policy, which is lifted so like-for-like from “The Thick of It” that it can only be intentional: “Free public transport for young carers”

Guido can’t work out whether the LibDems are now more ‘Thick of It’ or ‘Death of Stalin’. Either way, Armando Iannucci deserves royalties…

UPDATE: Just hours after going to publish, Wera Hobhouse has now withdrawn from the LibDem leadership race.

LibDem Leadership Teams Fling Insults

Last night the Mirror exposed comments from LibDem leadership contender Wera Hobhouse, accusing her opponent Ed Davey of having a “heart which beats with the Tories”, as well as attacking former leader Jo Swinson for a “daft” election campaign. Hobhouse is brave to attack Davey for being a secret Tory, given her and her husband are both former Tory councillors, who defected to the LibDems in 2005 without any intervening by-elections…

Things have been getting nasty behind the scenes as well. Hobhouse will be unaware of usually anonymous LibDem activists emailing Guido’s inbox over the last fortnight with repeated accusations of hypocrisy over her support of the Colston statue felling, alleging her husband’s family wealth comes from Isaac Hobhouse, a Bristolian slave trader who operated at the same time as Colston. Guido couldn’t plot a decisive family tree, so chose to leave the family squabbles alone…

Layla Moran is also a contender…

Hobhouse Throws Her Beret into the Ring

Since its announcement yesterday, the nation has become gripped with LibDem leadership election fever. With her timelessly elegant graphics, wardrobe of EU flag berets and catchy slogan “abandon equidistance”, Guido suspects Wera Hobhouse is the leader the LibDems deserve. Of course her entry into the race means a quarter of the parliamentary party are running for leader…

Despite having avoided being part of the Coalition, Wera is a true LibDem – already showing a competent ability to flip flop. After the 2019 election, Hobhouse reluctantly declaredthe battle to stop Brexit is over”. Thankfully this German-born, former Parisian student didn’t stick to her democratic principles for long, now campaigning on a  rejoiner platform for the UK to return to the heart of the EU. With Hobhouse at the helm, the LibDems could be confident of holding onto as many as half a dozen seats in 2024…
