Toxic Baldwin Returns

Tom Baldwin, the former Ed Miliband spinner notorious for his toxic press briefings, is set to take a role with the Remaoner People’s Vote campaign, Guido hears. Baldwin is in talks to join the campaign for a second referendum based in Millbank Tower. Let’s hope Tom has calmed down from the days when he compared a tax row to the death of Milly Dowler, made a sick jibe about cancer to a journalist, used the term ‘weaponise’ about the NHS and blamed Cameron for deaths in the Med. The Lobby will be just delighted to hear from him again.

Stop, stop, he’s already dead.

McBride Knifes Baldwin

baldwin mcbrde
It appears our old friend Damian McBride couldn’t resist sticking the knife in to Ed Miliband’s shambolic media operation. McBride was happy to recount the following anecdote about a grim-faced Tom Baldwin, the ex-Times hack who became Ed’s press guru.

“Tom Baldwin was in a very dark mood at a party one night. I told him ‘Tom, what have you got coming up, what are you looking forward to?’ And he just stared at his shoes for 15 seconds. And then he walked out to have a cigarette as though I’d deliberately tried to say something to offend him. I just thought he’s clearly got no good answer to that question. If you’ve got no good answer to that, if you’ve got no plan to turn it around, you can’t survive in this. When Gordon got himself deep into that territory I always kept him out of the hole by saying, ‘the next speech will turn it around’ or ‘I’ve got this great stuff we can leak about the Tories. Ed Miliband got himself into a place where just to get himself some good press he’d just deal with the Guardian and Observer and all the exclusives were given to them. It was crazy, it was just so Tom could walk around and say ‘Oh we got a good splash in the Observer.’ Who cares?”

Perhaps  psycho-spinner Baldwin, whose main contribution to Miliband’s mauling was his tasteless remarks on Ed’s “Milly Dowler moment“, actually left the party to powder his nose?

Baldwin Squirms Over “Milly Dowler Moment”

Miliband’s former psycho-spinner Tom Baldwin squirmed in his seat as the Daily Politics grilled him on his toxic press briefings during the election. On the infamous “weaponise the NHS” comment, Baldwin complained it was “intended to be off the record“. On his tasteless “Milly Dowler moment” remarks, he scoffs “this was another Nick Robinson exclusive… I did not use that phrase“. Though he refused to deny making any sort of comparison. Once a spinner…

Baldwin Plays Trump Card

Miliband’s former psycho-spinner Tom Baldwin has resurfaced from a summer of reflection to compare Jeremy Corbyn to Donald Trump:

“He is playing the role of outsider in an era when many in developed countries are rejecting the nuanced answers of a technocratic elite in favour of simplicity and the eternal “truths” of identity or ideology… As he defies decades of history — from the collapse of the Berlin Wall to the rise of a global economy and the financial crash — Mr Corbyn has as much in common with the shallow populism of Nigel Farage and Donald Trump as he does with Syriza and Podemos.”

One is a dangerous megalomaniac with a wealth of financial firepower and a Wikipedia page full of his questionable views. The other is Donald Trump…

Robbo Finally Confirms Baldwin Briefed “Milly Dowler Moment”

After Nick Robinson reported that “The Labour leader’s aides say that he sees this as another Milly Dowler moment”. There was a storm and it was a contentious front page news story about which he tweeted:

This was somewhat of a misdirection. In his new memoir he writes:

Lunch with Tom Baldwin. The Labour spin doctor is still buzzing after PMQs. This moment, he tells me, is like the moment when the story broke about the hacking of the murdered teenager Milly Dowler’s phone. He means they are both balance-tipping moments, the point where an issue that hasn’t previously excited most people – in one case phone- hacking within the Murdoch empire, in the other tax avoidance – suddenly galvanizes the public. This is a moment when Ed can show he’s standing up to the rich and powerful.

It is worth looking back on how partisan the response was to this storm, many tried to make out that Nick Robinson was the original author of the phrase:

Guido reported at the time that the “… tasteless metaphor sounds like Tom Baldwin…”
