President Crosby

lyndon2You would have thought a national newspaper columnist would know the difference between a Tory strategist and a former President of the United States, but then Owen Jones is a special case. According to Jones’ piece this morning CCHQ have recently hired one Lyndon Johnson as a spinner. Anyone would think that the Indy have sacked all their subs:

“While you’re saving your face, you’re losing your ass,” as LBJ once said…

Labour’s Chavez Backs Assad

Congratulations to Diane Abbott, Grahame Morris, Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Jones, Jody McIntyre and George Galloway…

Picture Special: Labour Karaoke Night

Labour’s big names descended on Manchester’s Rain Bar last night for LabourList’s much-awaited karaoke night. The event was members only for obvious reasons, but that didn’t stop these photos from finding their way out of the exclusive venue.

Tom Watson and Will Straw chose against the Kaiser Chiefs’ class war classic I Predict a Riot, instead bellowing out Ruby, their hit about unrequited love. Owen Jones put some effort into his rendition of an Oasis song, while Labour delegates were also treated to a new self-styled band to be known as Vernon and the Coakers. If anyone has video, you know what to do

Labour Figures Court Loony Ex-Respect Leader

Guido had hoped that Salma Yaqoob’s resignation last night meant we had seen the back of the now former Respect leader. Not so, if lefty types are to be believed. Loony left Labour tweeters have called on Yaqoob to join the party, while other prominent voices from the left have been praising Yaqoob to the hilt:

Guido is not quite sure why Labour would want someone like Yaqoob in their party. This is a woman who described the 7/7 bombings as a “reprisal”, and sees the Assange case as a “dubious” government conspiracy. A woman who folded her arms and refused to applaud a war hero who threw himself on a grenade to save his colleagues. A woman who fronts the anti-Israeli Stop the War Coalition. A woman who defended the Iranian state television channel after it was banned from British TV:

Guido is fully supporting Labour’s overtures…

Where Are You On Political Spectrum?

This is a bit of fun for fans of US politics – the respected Pew Research Center has a quick survey to place you on the Democrat-Republican spectrum. Guido scored as below:

Elsewhere Stateside Fox News has classified our own media-leftist-luvvie Owen Jones as a “creep” and “braying jackal”. Jones is lovin’ the attention…

Unions Funding Labour’s Left-Wing Dream Team

Militant Unite boss Len McCluskey is continuing his drive to take over the Labour Party by setting up a pressure group to rival Blairite faction Progress. According to the Guardian, the subtly-named Class will aim to “remind Labour of their working roots“. The new think tank’s members read like a left-wing dream team, with Paul Kenny of the GMB and Mark Serwotka’s PCS providing the funding and Seamus Milne, Jack Dromey, Owen Jones and Polly Tonybee sitting on the advisory panel. Sounds more like a union for the 1% to Guido…

The prolier than thou ethos of “class” is to articulate “an alternative that will resonate with working people”. Which must be why they are advised by the Guardian’s Winchester educated Stalinist Seamus Milne and by the three home-owning, multi-millionairess great granddaughter of the Earl of Carlisle. Polly Toynbee was also privately educated (Badminton), went to Oxford (St Annes) and on to the BBC. Toynbee is the daughter of the literary critic Philip Toynbee and grand-daughter of the famous historian Arnold J. Toynbee, his uncle was the philanthropist and economic historian Arnold Toynbee after whom Toynbee Hall is named. She was born into three generations of metropolitan elitists…

The downtrodden workers on minimum wage should be grateful that the likes of GMB’s Paul Kenny on £114,000, the PCS’s Mark Serwotka on £113,354 and not forgetting Len McCluskey on £149,312 are leading the charge for equality. Class act indeed.

Lebedev Hit By Huge Indy Losses

Evgeny Lebedev has suffered a huge hit to his pocket after his company announced losses of £24 million for the Independent, i and Evening Standard newspapers over the last financial year. Things were particularly bad for the Indy, which made a pre-tax loss of £18 million. Owen Jones may not get that pay rise he is lobbying after…

Total losses for Lebedev Holdings rose by 22.5% while an unnamed Indy director took home over half a million quid in his pay package – the same amount of money being haemorrhaged by Lebedev’s rags each week.

What a way to run a business…

Owen Jones: “Please Sir, I Want Some More”

Clearly not content with the royalties from his best selling book about the exploitation of the working classes, higher rate taxpayer Owen Jones wants more:

Young Campaign Rally Star Calls on Ken to Pay Taxes

Taking time out from photoshopping a fake campaign bus, Ken’s team have been whipping up support for tonight’s “eve of campaign rally” near Waterloo Station. Supporters have been lured in on the promise of speeches from the likes of election-jonah Eddie Izzard, Tessa Jowell and lefty wunderkid Owen Jones. Whoops…

Presumably the Ken team spent at least thirty seconds checking out what these speakers have had to say about Ken before they were invited to share at platform, and presumably Owen Jones is going to be repeating tonight his call for Ken to release his tax returns as he suggested on Sky News last week. Or is he a Chic-Ken?

Incase you missed that Owen says:

“People should always pay their taxes, there’s absolutely no excuse whatsoever for tax loopholes, tax avoidance and that goes for Ken Livingstone, it goes for Boris Johnson and it goes for anyone else… I think all mayoral candidates, I think that would be perfectly good, perfectly positive, if they release their tax returns… I’ve made it clear there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever.”

Chic-Ken is still refusing to do that…

There was one tiny silver lining for Ken though – when pushed Owen says that despite being a hypocrite, the tax mess does not rule Ken out of the race.

Hopefully Owen will have honed that line in time for the rally tonight…

Someone At ITV Has a Sense of Humour

Blinking in the winter darkness Neo-Guido walked into the ITV Daybreak studios at an ungodly hour this morning expecting to spar about welfare with socialist prodigy Owen Jones. In make-up it was announced that it would actually be Diane Abbott joining him on the sofa. Perhaps because of the Twitter-race row back in January she didn’t look too happy when greeted with a cheery good morning. With a shake of the head the handshake was spurned and not a word was exchanged off camera. Talk about divide and rule…

Daybreak host Kate Garraway (Mrs Derek Draper) handled things much better – there was even a smile. Despite the last time she came face to face with Neo-Guido…

Social Justice and the Housing Benefit Cap

The Labour left and the Guardian are getting very worked up about the perfectly reasonable housing benefit cap proposal

“for example Louise Ryan, 41, who lives with her husband and two children in Islington, north London, will see the £438-a-week benefit, which covers the rent, reduced to £340 under the changes to housing benefit introduced this month.”

To just afford that £438 rent those of us who work would have to earn as below:

Yearly Monthly Weekly
Gross Income £30,000.00 £2,500.00 £576.92
Pension Deductions £0.00 £0.00 £0.00
Taxable Income £22,525.00 £1,877.08 £433.17
Tax £4,505.00 £375.42 £86.63
National Insurance £2,733.00 £227.75 £52.56
Student Loan £0.00 £0.00 £0.00
Take Home £22,762.00 £1,896.83 £437.73

That rent alone is higher than median wages. It takes the taxes of four people on median wages to cover Louise’s rent. Add on her other benefits and Louise has a household income equivalent to a working family with a household income of over £40,000.  Where is the social justice in paying welfare benefits to people that are higher than the majority of the tax paying working people’s take home pay? This simply cannot continue.

To be fair the Labour shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne recognises this, so the Labour left have begun excoriating him as “a reactionary”. The ubiquitous Owen Jones, author of “Chavs, is representative of the Labour left. He thinks it is “progressive” to pay out to welfare recipients more in benefits than the majority of working people earn:

The Guardian reckons thousand of benefit recipients will have to move out of Kensington and Chelsea. Doesn’t your heart bleed? Guido really hopes that Owen Jones succeeds in getting the Labour Party to go into the election with a manifesto commitment to reverse the cap. It will be a huge electoral liability on the doorstep…

After PMQs Labour Insiders Doubt Ed Miliband Will Last Out 2012

[vodpod id=Video.15821152&w=480&h=350&fv=endpoint%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.guardian.co.uk%2Fpolitics%2Fvideo%2F2011%2Fdec%2F14%2Fprime-minister-s-questions-video%2Fjson]

Peter Hain is considered by Ed Miliband’s people to be something of an elder statesman, he was an early backer of Ed for leader and has reaped the benefit of that since. After what was a mauling at PMQs, judged one of Ed’s worst outings by many, Hain’s judgement was up there with the legendary Comical Ali. He reached for that old standby, blaming the Tory press…

Unfortunately in reality even the friendly left-wing press were underwhelmed. The Guardian’s Nicholas Watt, the Indy’s John Rentoul, Newsnight’s comrade Paul Mason, ubiquitous leftie Owen Jones and LabourList’s Mark Ferguson were all shaking their heads wistfully.

The more neutral observers such as the BBC’s Nick Robinson said that Miliband had “taken a pasting”, Total Politics described it as excruciating to watch. It was especially excruciating for Labour’s backbenchers and frontbenchers alike who go home for Christmas behind in the polls and on the wrong side of the public on Europe and the economy. Some are even talking of a Yvette Cooper / David Miliband dream ticket next year. That is how desperate they are getting…

Order of the OTT For Red Ken

It’s definitely time for an Order of the OTT given some of the absurd hyperbole that lefties have been spouting this week. Revolutionary darling Owen Jones gets a special commendation for his attempt to pull up the ladder with his “Abolish Oxbridge” campaign.[…] Read the rest
