Comrade Owen Jones Backs Brexit

Last week he flirted with the idea of supporting leaving Europe, today comrade Owen Jones joins the cause:

“David Cameron is now proposing a renegotiation that will strip away many of the remaining “good bits” of the EU, particularly opting out of employment protection rules. Yet he depends on the left to campaign for and support his new package, which will be to stay in an increasingly pro-corporate EU shorn of pro-worker trappings. Can we honestly endorse that?

… Hostility to the EU is seen as the preserve of the hard right, and not the sort of thing progressives should entertain. And that is why – if indeed much of the left decides on Lexit – it must run its own separate campaign and try and win ownership of the issue.

Such a campaign would focus on building a new Britain, one of workers’ rights, a genuine living wage, public ownership, industrial activism and tax justice. Such a populist campaign could help the left reconnect with working-class communities it lost touch with long ago…

The case for Lexit grows ever stronger, and – at the very least – more of us need to start dipping our toes in the water.”

A campaign for ‘Lexit’… now who might want to lead that?

Owen Jones Flirts With Brexit

“You’ve got a massive democratic deficit and a lack of accountability at the heart of the European project… it’s an attack on democracy as things stand.” Who spoke these words of soundness and wisdom? Owen Jones today calls for the left to reconsider: “I think a debate needs to open up on the left about whether we should stay in the European Union”.

Just hours later, with whom was he meeting?

Well, the ‘No’ campaign has been looking for a charismatic leader who isn’t a politician…

People’s Assembly Inflated Protest Figures Last Year As Well

The People’s Assembly Against Austerity’s spurious claim that 250,000 people attended their protest in London did not stand up to scrutiny when Guido investigated earlier this week. The real number was closer to 25,000.

It turns out this isn’t the first time these lefties have had a problem with numbers. After the 2014 People’s Assembly protest – which was significantly smaller than this year’s event – Owen Jones appeared on the BBC to demand they give more coverage to the “50,000” people on the march:

50,000 was the number press released by the People’s Assembly.

If this year’s event only had 25,000 people attending, how could 50,000 have turned up to last year’s smaller event?

The Socialist Worker report on the 2014 protest has the answer: the real number was much lower than Owen claimed.

“Up to 20,000 people marched against austerity in central London today, Saturday, in a loud and lively protest called by the People’s Assembly.”

More people turn up to watch Sheffield United play Walsall…

No, 250,000 People Did Not Protest On Saturday

Numbers have never been a strong point for the left. Hence why Owen Jones and his new mate Charlotte Church were pushing the quarter of a million figure for Saturday’s march in London. It’s nonsense.

Even lefties are sceptical:

While the police will not publicly give a figure, a source tells Guido this morning that Parliament Square can hold around 20,000 people. With a bit of overflow, the working estimate is around 25,000…

250,000 would fill not only Parliament Square but Whitehall and Trafalgar Square too. Twice over.

In order for the comrades to have achieved 250,000 people on their march, 5,000 people would have to have left the starting point at Bank every minute – almost 100 per second – in the time they claimed to have achieved this fantasy number. “A tight military formation couldn’t even do that,” Guido’s public order numbers bod derides.

Are the lefties really saying they had the same number of people who marched on Washington in 1963 at the height of the Civil Rights movement – put at between 200,000 and 250,000:

Landscape

Is Owen Jones really saying he is a bigger draw than Martin Luther King?

250,000 was also the figure given for Obama’s famous speech in Berlin in 2008:

obama

Notice a difference in the size of the crowd?

This is what 250,000 people looked like when Paul McCartney played in Mexico in 2012.

Shall we look at Saturday’s picture again?

Looks about a tenth of the size… pretty shoddy journalism for the papers to just regurgitate the number given by the People’s Assembly Against Austerity without so much as a raised eyebrow. Continue reading

Owen Jones v Dan Hodges: “The Katie Hopkins of the Blairite Right”

Jones: “You’ve never, ever, ever, ever come up with a single constructive policy proposal about what you’d like to see Labour doing. You don’t add anything constructive to the debate. What does Dan Hodges stand for?”

Hodges: “Actually, I did Owen. I said look at what Ed Miliband’s doing and do the opposite.”

Survey Shows Voters Think Labour Too Left-Wing

labour too left wing

In a survey for the Sunday Times 40% of voters think the next Labour leader should move closer to the centre. Even 35% of Labour voters think they should move to the centre though a worrying 30% think Labour should move to the left. A 30% rump led by the likes of Owen Jones, who is like one of those Japanese soldiers marooned on a pacific island who refuses to surrender, ranting against austerity in his Guardian column…

Man With Plane Trolls Owen Jones From the Sky

With Owen Jones visiting South Thanet yesterday to campaign for Labour, Simon Moores – an economist, Guardian contributor, councillor and pilot – saw his chance to troll the his lefty colleague from a great height. And troll him he did, by flying this banner over the constituency for the afternoon:

Moores tells Guido:

“I did it off my own back because I can’t stand Owen Jones. I can’t stand economic illiterates and Jones drives me crazy.”

One critic Owen can’t block…

So we are not allowed to say that a metropolitan liberal lefty lives in North London and now pointing out that Ed Miliband ruined his brother’s life is apparently anti-Semitic.

A spectacularly hypocritical allegation from someone who works at the Guardian.

Could Labour cheerleaders please provide us with a list of pejorative terms we are allowed to use about their spanner of a leader?

‘New Owen Jones’ is Scion of Media Elite

Look out Owen Jones, there’s another younger, prettier, chippy, extremely privileged left-winger on the scene. Public schoolboy Jacob Diamond has been on Sky News this afternoon, telling Kay Burley:

“More people are in favour of increasing income tax to solve the problems in society. That is how you fund it, easy.”

As a borderline Marxist student, obviously Jake knows all about the realities of paying tax.

Thankfully, Diamond told Sky that he does not want to be a politician, instead he wants to be a journalist:

In an already tough market and extremely competitive field, life is tough for any aspiring young hack.

Luckily for Jake, he’s the son of broadcaster Anne Diamond and telly executive Mike Hollingsworth.

Which has nothing to do with how he’s able to start his national broadcast career whilst still a student…

Owen Jones Distances Himself From Guardian

Challenged by Toby Young on the Daily Politics, Owen Jones swerved the question of the Guardian attacking offshore tax shelters whilst sheltering half-a-billion of its assets in the Caymans:

“I am not responsible for my employer’s tax affairs.”

While writing in today’s paper that “while the poor’s smallest misdemeanours are punished, the rich are able to draft the loopholes they then use to avoid tax”…[…] Read the rest
