Rare scenes of civil liberty unity on Question Time last night as every panellist came out against domestic covid passports, and a forced requirement by employees for workers to have the vaccine; with the far-left Nadia Whittome, hardline-centrist Layla Moran and CRG chair Mark Harper all opposing the floated measure for different reasons:

• Layla Moran: “Out of the question”, citing people being able to take time off to get the vaccine; “I am a liberal and my view is you can trust individuals to do the right thing, and in this case actually what you’re asking them to do is divulge medical data as well. I don’t think that’s right”
• Mark Harper: “It’s particularly ironic that I’ve heard it being argued as a way to get the economy re-opened, well the reality is younger people will be the last people to be vaccinated, they’re the ones that have been damaged most by the economic dislocation from Covid, we’d be in a ridiculous position where  we’d be re-opening the economy, and younger people would be the people shut out as older people were able to go back out again”
• Nadia Whittome: “What the government has actually said on ‘no jab, no job’ is that’s up to employers – now this is absolutely wrong… they need to intervene to legislate against this, we cannot have a situation where employers are able to have a blank cheque to exploit workers in this way”

The founder and CEO of the Oakman Inns chain, also on the panel, said he would be “deeply uncomfortable” with enforcing the principle of ‘no jab, no job’ for his employees. It seems Covid has met a rival pandemic that’s spreading even more rapidly: common sense…

• Zarah Sultana, MP for Coventry South. Majority: 401. 26-year-old Zarah almost didn’t win her West Midlands seat in 2019, with Labour’s majority collapsing from 7,947 to just 401. Former NUS hack. Has begun to style herself as the Honourable Member for Twitter with often viral pithy yet platitudinous socialist tweets. Pays her staff what she calls ‘poverty wages‘…
• Claudia Webbe, MP for Leicester East and still a sitting Councillor in Islington. Majority: 6,019. Currently suspended as a Labour MP after being charged with harassment against a woman. Formerly Labour NEC member and head of disputes for the party. Formerly advisor to Ken Livingstone. Questionable judgement.
• Bell Ribeiro-Addy, MP for Streatham. Majority: 17,690. Another former NUS hack. As Black Students Officer at the NUS, she once shut down a debate at Durham University with threats of violence because a controversial speaker was invited. Spoke at a “salute” to the Second Intifada, which killed 1,000 Israelis. Keeps attending Zoom calls with former Labour members expelled for antisemitism…
• Charlotte Nichols, MP for Warrington North. Majority: 1,509. Daughter of the President of the TUC. Worked for a trade union for five years before becoming an MP. PPS to Emily Thornberry and Louise Haigh. Confused over lockdown communication. Not a fan of gay Tories.
• Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse. Majority: 28,904. In 2014 accused Tony Blair of “spreading Zionist propaganda”. Questions remain how she managed to leap to the top of her local council’s 18,000-strong housing list, securing a riverside apartment in months despite having no dependents.
• Sam Tarry, MP for Ilford South. Majority: 24,101. Mouthy director of Jeremy Corbyn’s 2016 Labour Party leadership campaign. Very friendly with Angela Rayner. Failed to be properly parachuted into Hull West in 2017. In Ilford South in 2019, his opponent was abruptly suspended over an allegation of sexual harassment. With his rival ineligible due to his suspension, Tarry was selected. Known locally as ‘Stitch up Sam‘…
• Olivia Blake, MP for Sheffield Hallam. Majority: 712. Daughter of the leader of Leeds City Council. Failed to be elected onto Labour NEC in 2013. Successfully elected with the backing of Momentum Labour’s National Policy Forum in 2018. Hard left Sheffield Councillor for six years. Supports a “National Food Service”. Resigned as a PPS in September after voting against the Veterans Bill.
• Tahir Ali, MP for Birmingham Hall Green. Majority: 28,508. Former trade union political officer. Ali was handed a formal warning by police after he broke government restrictions by attending a funeral with up to 100 mourners at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
• Beth Winter, MP for Cynon Valley. Majority: 8,822. Former Trade Union official. Resigned as a PPS in September after voting against the Veterans Bill. Shouted at tea.
• Nav Mishra, MP for Stockport. Majority: 10,039. Former trade union organiser and one of the founders of Stockport Momentum. A Labour NEC member on the JC9, then JC8 slate, who has supported Pete Willsman, Mishra sits on the NEC disputes panel.
• Ian Byrne, MP for Liverpool West Derby. Majority: 29,984. Former Trade Union organiser. Walks around with neighbouring Liverpool socialist MPs Paula Barker and Kim Johnson. Once shared abusive comments about female politicians…
• Paula Barker, MP for Liverpool Wavertree. Majority: 31,310. Former Trade Union convenor. Yet to speak out on the abuse that drove Luciana Berger out of the party which led to her getting the seat. In January pretended to go to a Holocaust Educational Trust event.
• Kim Johnson, MP for Liverpool Riverside. Majority: 37,043. Yet to speak out about the abuse that drove Louise Ellman out the party. In January pretended to go to a Holocaust Educational Trust event.

All are members of the Socialist Campaign Group – now boasting 34 MPs, along with stalwarts John McDonnell, Diane Abbott, and Jeremy Corbyn. It is striking how many replaced former centrist Labour MPs from Chuka Umunna and Mike Gapes to Luciana Berger, Ann Coffey, and Chris Leslie. Brilliant scenes on Peston last night as baby Corbynista Nadia Whittome found out she’d been forcibly resigned by the Labour Party from her PPS role after voting against the Overseas Operation Bill. Labour had put in a one-line whip to abstain on the bill, however Nadia voted against it along with her pals Corbyn, McDonnell, Abbott, other hard-liners and two fellow PPSs.

The Mirror’s Oliver Milne was correct that, as Nadia was being interviewed, she’d been removed from her post. When Labour said the three frontbenchers had “resigned”, they in fact meant sacked or ‘forcibly resigned’ – as opposed to the three submitting letters of resignation prior to breaking the whip. If you thought Nadia finding out was funny, the reaction of the TrotsApp crowd on Twitter was even more funny…

Three MPs – Beth Winter, Nadia Whittome and Olivia Blake – have been “resigned”:from their roles as Shadow PPSs after voting against the government’s Overseas Operation Bill, against the party whip to abstain. Will the last Corbynista to leave the shadow front bench please turn the light off…

Nadia Whittome has told Peston she doesn’t consider herself resigned as it was a one-line whip, however a Labour spokesperson tells Guido all three are definitely gone as PPSs. Sacked in other words. Nadia doesn’t seem to understand she was sacked and the “resignation” was entirely euphemistic…

23 year old Corbynista MP Nadia Whittome made a splash yesterday evening as she declared she had been ‘sacked’ from her role as a casual worker at a retirement home in her constituency. Whittome claims that she was ‘sacked’ for “speaking out about a lack of PPE”. This is despite the home, which has not had a single Coronavirus death, saying it has “three months’ supply of PPE, including over 25,000 pairs of gloves, 7,700 aprons and nearly 6,000 masks”. Despite working just eight casual shifts at the home all year, the incident is gaining significant media attention…

Guido has seen the letter Whittome was sent, which curiously has not been reported in other news outlets:

“On Thursday, I was approached by several Lark Hill residents, our staff, our head office team and executive who were anxious about comments in the Nottingham Post around ‘a lack of PPE’. This is a position myself and the charity disagrees with and is not supported by the facts.

Our protocol hasn’t been met and ongoing press coverage of Lark Hill isn’t benefiting our residents, staff or charity; managing feedback is time consuming for myself and our wider team at a time of crisis when we simply wish and need to be focused on our day to day work, protecting our staff and residents’ lives in the community.”

Guido can see why a retirement home may ask a gobby casual worker to no longer very occasionally saunter in, especially if her media appearances from the local press to Newsnight were unduly scaring the residents.

There are, of course, extensive legal protections in the UK that prevent whistleblowers losing their jobs. If Whittome genuinely believes she was “sacked for speaking out about PPE” then Guido is expecting a tribunal…
