Techfugees: PM’s Tech Advisor Plans to Hack Migrant Crisis

Mike Butcher, a well known figure in the London tech scene who has advised the Prime Minister on tech startups, is spearheading what he hopes will be the tech community’s response to the refugee crisis. He’s christened it “Techfugees”…

In a sign that European tech is finally acquiring some of Silicon Valley’s egomaniacal tendencies, over 300 techies have rushed to join Butcher’s Techfugee Facebook group. Already they are planning “projects,” “products,” and “hackathons” to find solutions to the millions of refugees fleeing the Middle East and Africa. Ideas the group has come up with so far include starting an “e-learning and coding teaching programme” in refugee camps and creating an app that helps migrants avoid Hungarian guards. Maybe if they kickstart an ISIS-hunting drone…
