Now Independent MP Mike Amesbury has been sentenced to 10 weeks in prison at the Chester Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to assault by beating. The now infamous video is here…
Meanwhile, the Tories have already begun selecting their candidate for Runcorn and Helsby, and Reform has been actively campaigning in the constituency most weekends. Still, Amesbury holds a solid majority of 14,696—a challenge for Farage to overturn…
UPDATE: Zia Yusuf calls for a resignation: “The great people of Runcorn deserve far better than waiting six weeks for a recall petition to take place. We call on Mike Amesbury to do the honourable thing and resign immediately.”
One MP has really swung into the New Year. Mike Amesbury has submitted a whopping 201 Written Parliamentary Questions since assaulting a man 90 days ago. The now-independent MP pleaded guilty last week to assault by beating…
Amesbury asks such hard-hitting questions as what steps Housing Secretary Rayner “plans to take if local authorities do not meet their local housing targets.” In the 90 days prior to the battery incident in October Amesbury actually only asked 63 questions. That’s a 320% increase. Beating his record…
Suspended Labour MP Mike Amesbury is due to appear at Chester Magistrates Court this morning. Last November Amesbury was charged with common assault by Cheshire Police following an altercation in Frodsham on 26 October. The Runcorn and Helsby MP was a Labour shadow minister between 2018 and 2024…
UPDATE: Amesbury pleads guilty to assault by beating.
UPDATE II: Amesbury expelled from Labour party.
Co-conspirators will remember Guido was first off the mark with the news that Runcorn MP Mike Amesbury had been involved in a violent fracas back in November. The video, which bears continual rewatching, is here…
Amesbury was charged with assault. The CPS said: “Following a review of the evidence provided by Cheshire police, we have authorised a charge of common assault against Mike Amesbury MP, 55. The charge follows an alleged assault in Frodsham, Cheshire, on Saturday, 26 October 2024.” Labour suspended the MP…
Amesbury is yet to appear in court and the outcome is uncertain. For his part, he has called the incident “deeply regrettable”. That said, should the Cheshire constituency of Runcorn and Helsby end up as the first parliamentary by-election contender of 2025, it would be an interesting objective test of the current political weather. The seat, which is a new patch first contested at last year’s general election, takes in most of the original boundaries of the old Weaver Vale constituency. Weaver Vale was held by the Tories from 2010 to 2017…
There’s probably little chance for CCHQ locally though, not to mention the current national situation. Reform was second at the 2024 general election, with just over 7000 votes to Labour’s 22,000. Amesbury’s majority is 14,696 – which would be a challenge for Farage to overturn. Reform has, however, been fastest out of the traps in the seat, already sending out mail and nodding at a recent nearby council by-election which saw the party nab a seat from Labour. Guido would not be surprised if Nigel is spotted in Runcorn soon..
Reform is out of the traps early with a new letter campaign across Runcorn and Helsby. The party has gone for two visual elements: A massive picture of Nigel and a snapshot of sitting MP Mike Amesbury ‘allegedly’ thumping a constituent. Striking…
Amesbury is due at Chester Magistrates Court on the 16th January. Farage notes in the letter that Reform beat the Tories in the election with 18% of the vote compared to the Tories’ 16%. The Helsby Hellraiser, meanwhile, got 52.9% of the vote and a majority of almost 15,000…
The expectation is of course that a by-election is inbound. Hilariously Nigel writes that Reform is locally “fighting against the toll issues on the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges.“ Which happens to be the exact subject of the argument that raised tensions on that fateful Friday…

Cheshire Police says “MP Mike Amesbury has been charged with assault following an incident in Frodsham.” He’s been summoned to court. Here comes our first by-election…
UPDATE: Amesbury’s statement:
“I have today been summonsed to court to face a charge of common assault following an incident in Frodsham last month, which was deeply regrettable. I am continuing to cooperate with police and given this is an ongoing case I cannot comment further.”
Speaking at his speech on how to achieve “progressive capitalism” Wes Streeting fired a dig and Andy Burnham:
“Bond markets are not bond villains and fiscal rules matter.”
