Exit Polls Point to Macron Versus Le Pen, Difficult to Call Final Result

Emmanuel Macron is set to face Marine Le Pen, exit polls predict 28% and 23% respectively of the vote in the first round, according to projections by polling institute Ipsos.

Left-wing Jean-Luc Mélenchon comes in third, with 20% of the vote. Zemmour got 7% and conservative Valérie Pécresse from Les Républicains 5%. Which implies 20% of the also ran vote was to the left and 12% to the right. Whether those votes transfer directly is questionable, much of the left-wing vote will stay home and some centre-right voters will back Macron rather than Le Pen. How much decides the result…

Le Pen Closes Gap Further as France Enters Final Day of Campaigning

As if the race for the Presidency of France couldn’t get any tighter, Macron’s three-point lead from Tuesday has closed even further. A poll out this morning for the New Statesman now puts the gap down to just two percent, with Macron on 51% to Le Pen’s 49%.

A different poll out yesterday afternoon had the gap even closer, with just 1% between the two. The campaign period for the first round ends at midnight tonight, with voters going to the polls on Sunday. A real nail biter…

Le Pen Within Touching Distance of Macron

Marine Le Pen’s poll ratings reached an all time high last night, as one poll put her within just three points of Macron on 48.5% to his 51.5%. Margin of error stuff…

The poll, just one week ahead of the first round, reflects what has been a shaky period for incumbent Macron who has been losing momentum to Le Pen. A first-round poll also has Le Pen in a close second, with 23% to Macron’s 26.5%. The support of third-place hard-leftist Melenchon could be a decider here…

Zooming out from this single data point, while Macron’s Ukraine boost has halved he still remains well ahead in the poll of polls; though according to research by Ifop, only 12% would like to “barbecue with” Macron at a campsite versus 19% for Le Pen. They don’t specify whether the candidates would be guests or on the menu…

WATCH: Macron’s Interior Minister Accuses Le Pen of Being Soft on Islam (with Translation)

Look at Marine Le Pen’s stunned face during this exchange. Hilarious footage has made its way over the channel of a debate between Marine Le Pen and Macron’s Minister for the Interior Gérald Darmanin, who went on the attack accusing Le Pen of being “a little soft… not hard enough” on the issue of Islam in France. Clearly stunned by the claim, Le Pen, correctly in Guido’s view, ended up defending Islam as “a religion like any other”See Guido’s translation of the exchange below:

Gerald Darmanin: In her attempts to rehabilitate [her party], Mrs. Le Pen has gone a bit soft. I find you… you need to take some vitamins, you’re not tough enough here. If you compare your line to what Mrs. Marechal Le Pen [Le Pen’s more openly hardline niece] and Mr. Collard [RN MEP] are saying, there’s a huge difference. If I understand you right, you’re prepared to not even legislate on religion, and you say that Islam is not even a problem. You’ve gone quite far, it’s going to disappoint quite a lot of your voters I imagine.

Presenter: I have to admit I’ve not heard the same thing this evening, Mr. Darmanin.

Darmanin: On the contrary, Mrs. Le Pen says it’s not a problem with Islam, it’s a problem with ideology. The Salafists, the Muslim Brotherhood… (they talk over each other)

Marine Le Pen: Yes I can confirm that I don’t intend to attack Islam, which is a religion like any other. And, because I am strongly attached to our French values, I want to conserve total freedom of religion. That’s my opinion.
