Maggie’s Flat For Sale For £1.2 Million

112 Swan Court, once the marital home of Margaret and Denis Thatcher, is for sale. The sixth floor apartment just off the King’s Road in Chelsea has far reaching views over the City of London. Very light and airy with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, though fair to say it is in need of a little refurbishment.

Estate agents say: “It was whilst living in the property that Margaret Thatcher made the momentous decision to return her attention to a career in politics”.

Yours for £1.2 million…

Corbyn’s Alternative Facts on Thatcher and Apartheid

Jeremy Corbyn has written to Theresa May claiming Margaret Thatcher “supported Apartheid”. He’s tweeted the same:

A demonstrably untrue statement straight out of the Trumpian playbook that the Labour leader is currently copying. Nelson Mandela praised Thatcher’s role in helping to end Apartheid, famously saying:

“She is an enemy of Apartheid. We have much to thank her for.”

Amhed Kathadra, one of Mandela’s closest friends, said Thatcher was instrumental in ending Apartheid:

“Her word did count – I’m sure of it… Mrs Thatcher wasn’t one of our oppressors.”

F W de Klerk said of Thatcher’s contribution to the end of Apartheid:

“She exerted more influence on what happened in South Africa than any other political leader”

Robin Renwick, Britain’s former ambassador to South Africa, has written at length about how Thatcher quietly campaigned to end Apartheid. He says Thatcher told P W Botha “very firmly” to end Apartheid and “exploded” at the South African ambassador, telling him “Apartheid must go”. Renwick says the claim Thatcher supported Apartheid is a “myth“. Fake news from Jez…

BBC: Thatcher Most Influential Woman of Last 70 Years

Maggie Thatcher will top the Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List today, a roll of honour that “celebrates the seven women who’ve made the biggest impact on women’s lives over the past seven decades”. Awkward for Auntie, who broke its own golden rule of news writing – always put the most important line first – to bury Thatcher’s victory in the fourth paragraph of an online piece. Instead they led with Bridget Jones, who came sixth out of seven on the list. Meanwhile, from The Guardian:

One panel member, Ayesha Hazarika, a former adviser to the Labour MP Harriet Harman, said she felt “uncomfortable” with the choice of Thatcher, but said the list was about celebrating impact “both positive and negative”.

As the Mrs T once said: “I owe nothing to Women’s Lib”…

Thatcher is Back!

thatcherbackA Law Society backed initiative called ‘The First 100 Years’  published a timeline celebrating the achievements of women connected to the law profession.  The list included former solicitor Nicola Sturgeon, Shami Chakrabarti and Guido’s favourite, Baroness Scotland. As Guido reported two weeks ago a certain female Tory barrister was missing. Subsequently confronted with the omission the team compiling the list has now added the first female PM to her rightful place. On the 26th anniversary of her resignation the Iron Lady is back. First Blair, now Thatcher. When will Disraeli return to the scene?

Legal Luvvies Forget Achievement of Notable Female Tory Barrister

thatcher-missing

A Law Society backed initiative called ‘The First 100 Years’  has published a timeline celebrating the achievements of women connected to the law profession. Certainly a noble project, or so you might think. Former solicitor Nicola Sturgeon is a deserved inclusion, Baroness Scotland makes the cut and so does Shami Chakrabarti, though for some reason they neglect to mention her more recent work. Curiously there is a gap between 1977 and 1980. The lefty legal establishment must have forgotten the achievement of a certain female Tory barrister in that time…

Dave Most Popular PM Since Maggie

pms

Until the referendum at least Cameron was the Tories’ best electoral asset and that is still reflected in his polling numbers – YouGov finds he is the most popular PM since Maggie. Blair remains Labour’s most/only successful PM in recent memory. Gordon languishes in last, just 9% describe him as “good“. The former Prime Mentalist’s score with Labour voters is almost the same as Dave’s, Brown has a 19% favourable rating compared to Cameron’s 15%. Lady T still streets ahead of everyone…
