Louisa Compton New Head of Channel 4 News

Channel 4 has appointed Dispatches editor Louisa Compton as the channel’s new Head of News, replacing Dorothy Byrne following the abrupt news she is standing down. Byrne’s departure was widely seen as an attempt to thaw relations with Number 10, who were not happy with Byrne’s ‘Boris is a Liar’ speech over the summer…

Compton, however, is unlikely to inspire confidence in the former Vote Leave team running Number 10. At Dispatches, her programme targeted the Leave campaign and ignored Remain’s rule flouting…

Before Channel 4, Compton previously worked at the BBC, as launch Editor of the Victoria Derbyshire Programme, and before that Editor of youth focussed BBC Newsbeat as well as BBC Radio 5 Live. She takes on the Channel 4 gig at a moment when both her current and former organisations are set to face heavy scrutiny from the new Government…

Dispatches Fishing Expedition Ignores Remain Collusion

Journalists from Dispatches are ringing round former junior Vote Leave volunteers on a fishing expedition to find the next Chris Wylie or Shahmir Shah. Guido understands the programme is focusing on alleged co-ordination between Vote Leave and BeLeave. For some strange reason Channel 4 don’t seem interested in investigating the much greater evidence of co-ordination between the various Remain campaigns, which the Electoral Commission is also looking into. Is this an impartial use of taxpayers’ money?

Dispatches has at least two producers, Janet Eastham and Stefanie Stafford, calling the home phone numbers of ex-Vote Leave youngsters, which doesn’t seem very GDPR compliant. Guido hopes their ability to clock a Walter Mitty is better than the shambolic Carole Cadwalladr charade with the less than reliable Wylie and Shahmir. If Dispatches new commissioning editor, Louisa Compton, is interested in making a more balanced programme about the Remain campaign flouting the rules, Guido is happy to help them out…

Marr and Victoria Derbyshire Editors Moving On

All change at the Beeb this week. After missing out on the Newsnight job having made it to the final two, Victoria Derbyshire editor Louisa Compton is quitting the Corporation for Channel 4, where she will be the new commissioning editor at Dispatches. Safe to say the Tories will be relieved another candidate with very Channel 4 politics didn’t get the Newsnight gig.

Rob Burley, currently editor of Marr, has been promoted to become the new editor of the BBC’s live political programmes, the old job of Number 10 comms chief Robbie Gibb. He may not have as much time to spend flaming critics on Twitter in his new role…

And Katy Searle is the BBC head of Westminster. She was through to the final round to be Today programme editor at the beginning of the year. Plum job in charge at Millbank.
