Top Rennard Ally New LibDem CEO

LibDem staffers are kicking off over Lord Rennard’s close friend Nick Harvey being appointed as their new CEO. Harvey has been in charge on an interim basis and has today been given the job permanently, though his appointment is causing consternation among the troops due to his closeness to the pervy peer. Sources say Harvey was a character witness for Rennard during the internal inquiry into his behaviour. It has been pointed out that Vince Cable only ruled out Rennard having a spokesperson role, and word is that Harvey wants to find a way for him to be involved behind the scenes in the campaigns team. Just ten days ago Jo Swinson was demanding Rennard be kicked out of the party. No action has been taken since…

Young Liberals Condemn Cable For Defending Rennard

The LibDems’ youth wing has condemned Vince Cable’s defence of Lord Rennard yesterday. Cable told the BBC he didn’t regret having the pervy peer help out on his campaign and rather unwisely told LibDem women to “move on”. Unsurprisingly that has gone down like a cup of sick with the Young Liberals:

“We at Young Liberals are disappointed to hear Vince Cable defending Lord Rennard’s involvement during his election campaign this year. Alistair Webster QC, who conducted an earlier investigation into the Rennard allegations on behalf of the party, made a statement saying “let me be clear from the outset that the evidence suggests that Lord Rennard’s behaviour has caused distress to a number of women, so much so that they came forward several years after the event in question”.

As part of Young Liberals Policy, Lord Rennard is banned from attending all Young Liberals events, and our members can refuse to work with him without fear of disciplinary action.”

LibDem insiders say the truth is doddery Cable is totally out of touch with the modern world on sexual harassment and doesn’t understand why LibDem women have a problem with Rennard. They say Vince has to be strong-armed into making any critical noises about Rennard and had to be talked down from giving him an official job. LibDems have been depressed by Cable’s tin ear on this issue…

Vince Cable’s Stunning Harassment Hypocrisy

Vince Cable has joined in the condemnation of the Westminster sex pest revelations, saying in a statement last night that parliament needs to do better at dealing with allegations of harassment:

“The Prime Minister is right to be calling for these changes. Parliament clearly needs improved procedures to respond to allegations of harassment. The Liberal Democrats have introduced similar changes since a review in 2013, which has proved a positive step.”

How does Sir Vince deal with harassment allegations? Infamous wrong ‘un Lord Rennard ran Cable’s campaign in Twickenham in June, he was in Vince’s campaign office on polling day, went leafleting outside Twickenham station and posed for photos with Cable and his constituents. Here they are together on the campaign:

Tell us again Vince about how seriously you take harassment allegations…

Rennard Stands Down: Full Statement

rennard

Lord Rennard has quit the LibDem Federal Executive:

A week ago, I was elected by the votes of the Liberal Democrat members of the House of Lords to be their representative on the party’s Federal Executive.  Any Lib Dem peer could have stood, all of them could vote, and I was elected by 44 votes to 25.  Since then a number of party members have objected to that outcome and sought to effectively overturn it by removing the right of the Lib Dem peers to have a representative on it.

I was disappointed that in a party called the Liberal Democrats there should be such a challenge to the result of a democratic election.  I recognise, however, that there has been much controversy in the party and this has continued partly because it has been very poor in communicating to its members the outcomes of all the various processes investigating allegations made against me.  In particular, many members have remained unaware of the key conclusion concerning me in the final report of the independent businesswoman, Helena Morrissey, who reviewed these processes.

Farron Calls On Rennard to Stand Down

LibDemVoice is reporting that LibDem leader Tim Farron is asking the pervy peer “Chris to step down from the FE in the best interests of the party”. This could be both awkward and amusing…

Sex Pest Lord Rennard Elected to LibDem Federal Executive

rennard

LibDemVoice is reporting that the Liberal Democrats’ leading sex-pest Chris Rennard has been elected to the party’s ruling federal executive by his fellow peers. The Federal Executive is the governing body of the party. During his leadership campaign Tim Farron said “I have no intention of appointing him to any role in the party.” In 2014 after Lord Rennard’s refused to apologise for his inappropriate behaviour towards young women, his membership of the Liberal Democrats was be suspended by the then party president Tim Farron. Extraordinary that he should be back in a governing position in the party…

“The Strange Sex of LibDem England”

Someone is getting up to all sorts of mischief down in Portsmouth, circulating this attack leaflet piling into the LibDems over their many sex scandals:

Jeremy Thorpe, Cyril Smith, Rennard and Hancock – you can’t help but think whoever is sticking this through people’s letterboxes has a point…

Rennard's Threat to Farron

Randy Rennard has just released this statement giving the LibDems – mainly Tim Farron – the following ultimatum if they don’t fancy a bloody court battle:

“There will be no court action if the party simply follows its own rules, or if there is a realistic prospect of mediation succeeding. In the meantime, Lord Rennard is still waiting to see the report of Alistair Webster’s investigation, as was promised to him. He was, however, informed by Alistair Webster personally that the report’s only decision was that there should be no further action, as there was insufficient evidence to hold a disciplinary hearing. Any lawful party action and any mediation will have to reflect this.”

Clegg says no apology, no whip. Liable party president Farron is keeping quiet this morning. Popcorn…

“I will not offer an apology to the four women complainants.”

The numbers don’t lie: Rennard doesn’t care about his victims, only about his party. Sorry seems to be the hardest word…

+++ Rennard Suspended By LibDems +++

“Nick Clegg made clear last week, and again this morning, that it would be inappropriate for Lord Rennard to resume the Liberal Democrat whip unless he apologises. Lord Rennard has refused to do so.

The Regional Parties Committee, which oversees disciplinary procedures under the English Party membership rules, today decided to suspend Lord Rennard’s membership of the party pending a disciplinary procedure. As such, he cannot return to the Liberal Democrat group in the House of Lords.

Lord Rennard will now be investigated for bringing the party into disrepute on the grounds of his failure to apologise as recommended by Alistair Webster QC.”

The LibDems are doing a brilliant job for their campaign for Lords reform…

Quote of the Day

Nick Clegg’s former aide Bridget Harris quits the party over its handling of the Rennard scandal:

“You go into politics and you accept the notion of a collective agreement for the greater good. After the 15 years I worked in the Lib Dems I realised there is no greater good, just everyone doing a s**t job.”

Impotent Clegg Repeats Broken Rennard Promise

Nick Clegg took a pasting over Rennard on LBC this morning. Judging by the ensuing silence when asked why he doesn’t just boot the pervy peer out, Clegg clearly wants to get rid but is impotent to do so. Instead all he would commit to is banning Rennard from working on the LibDems’ election campaign:

This is a promise the LibDems have made before and – shockingly – broken. Back in 2010 when Rennard resigned over expenses, though citing ill health, their official line was exactly the same: “he is not part of our campaign team”. Only for him to soon be back spinning for Clegg at the leadership debates and be seen popping in and out of the party’s Cowley Street HQ. Which is strange, because it is unlike LibDems to go back on their word.

Two Interesting Quotes From Nick Clegg

Nick Clegg used to take allegations of sexual impropriety very seriously indeed. Here he is in November 2012, making it very clear where he stands on ITV’s The Agenda:

“Serious questions need to be asked and if after we find out what’s happened, it’s clear that people have turned a blind eye or, worse still, connived with it, then of course they’re going to have to be held to account and – if that turns out to be the case – heads will need to roll of course.”

Here is is that same month, asking all the right questions on 5Live:

“I have been thinking about this a lot, because I cannot understand how this could have remained hidden for so long. There just must have been so many people who knew what was going on …and I just keep asking myself why, why did this remain buried for so long?”

Now of course this was Clegg commenting on sex allegations against Jimmy Savile, rather than the entirely unconnected matter of Lord Rennard that blew up three months later. But interesting, nonetheless…

LibDem Women Condemn Party

Rennard says in his statement: “I now look forward to resuming my roles within the Liberal Democrats.” Without so much as an apology…

LibDems Won’t Discipline Rennard

Cathy Newman reports that the LibDems are to take no disciplinary action against Lord Rennard. Worth remembering what Clegg had to say following the Rennard Report last summer:

“It makes sobering reading. It shows that stretching over a 20-year period a series of mistakes were made which left a number of women feeling seriously let down and for that there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever.

The report also shows that the individuals who dealt with their complaints had the right motives, but there weren’t the right processes in place to support the women who’d come forward. And as leader of the Liberal Democrats I take responsibility for that.”

And yet he is doing absolutely nothing about it…

UPDATE:

Party president Tim Farron has called on Rennard to apologise. If you’re a LibDem you can harass women again and again and it’s fine so long as you say sorry.

Rennard Cover-Up 'Niece' Alison Suttie Made LibDem Peer

Alison Suttie, Clegg’s former deputy chief of staff who was implicated in covering up the Rennard scandal, is also given a peerage. According to the Mail Suttie referred to herself as Rennard’s “niece” and asked Jo Swinson to interview those who had made allegations against Rennard. Something she denies. Swinson is said to have told victims to address future complaints to Suttie in Clegg’s office. Clegg says they never reached him but prizes for all anyway.
