Miliband Calls For Inquiry Into His Wife’s Client

Local Doncaster MP Ed Miliband has been taking a brave stand against HS2, which is an interesting contrast to the position that Labour Leader Ed Miliband took. He now opposes it so much that last week he pledged to push for “a proper examination and inquiry into how HS2 can have got things so wrong” arguing that “my constituents deserve answers about how they have been so badly let down.”

This is a brave call. An expansive inquiry might well end up looking closely at the work of a certain lawyer who worked extensively on HS2 for the Department for Transport, Ms Justine Thornton QC. Who just so happens to be his wife

Miliband’s HS2 Opposition Opposed By His Wife

Ed Miliband has secured an adjournment debate tonight on HS2 where he will argue against the line going through his Doncaster constituency. Miliband has been on quite a journey – he used to say he “absolutely” supported the project before u-turning because it will “disrupt” his constituents. Will it disrupt relations with the wife too? Ed’s other half Justine Thornton QC has for the last few months been working as counsel for the Department for Transport, defending HS2 as it faced public opposition at Lords committee stage. MPs needing lines to take before Ed’s debate tonight can read Justine’s evidence on behalf of DfT and HS2 hereMr Miliband attacking HS2 in the Commons, Mrs Miliband defending it in the Lords…

God Bless the Girl: Mrs Miliband Main Breadwinner

Congratulations to Justine Thornton, aka Mrs Miliband, who has been appointed Queen’s Counsel. The rank will be bestowed by Lord Chancellor Michael Gove at a ceremony next month. The new gig means that, if she wasn’t already, Justine will certainly now be the main breadwinner in the Miliband household. The average QC earns in excess of £250,000-a-year, and the best take home over a million. Good news for Ed, whose £130,000 salary as Labour leader dropped to a relatively modest £67,000 when he quit in May. As the woman most responsible for the family finances, you won’t hear Justine whinging about a “millionaires’ tax cut”…

UPDATE: Marina Wheeler, Mrs Mayor of London, also makes silk. She is however still some way behind Boris’ reported £600,000 earnings from City Hall, Westminster, the Telegraph and his publishers…

Ed Weaponises Justine

Justine Miliband gives the BBC a rare interview:

“I think it’s going to get worse, I think over the next couple of months it’s going to get really vicious, really personal, but I’m totally up for this fight. I think this goes way beyond Ed as an individual, I think it’s about whether decencies and principle count for something in political life.”

Mrs Miliband Goes Massively Off Message

Remember when Ed claimed that “boasts from George Osborne” about the economy don’t reflect “the experience of everyday families” because his figures “ignore the growing number of self-employed” and the impact of “Victorian” flexible hours contracts on mothers?

A clampdown on zero-hours and self-employment will be a key part of Labour’s election message, but it seems Ed’s ‘secret weapon’ Mrs Miliband did not get the memo. Justine spoke out last week in favour of flexible work that is “fantastic for being family-friendly”:

“Because I’m self-employed. So that means if I want to see my kids in a school play, I don’t have to ask anyone, I carry on working in the evening.”

Violently off message…
