Peterborough MP’s Speedy Justice

Paul Bristow, MP for Peterborough, has been given a 28-day driving ban after admitting to speeding. The MP took his punishment after, to his credit, having asked to be banned to avoid “hypocrisy”. Bristow was caught doing 76 mph in a 50 zone, and admitted to the incident in his Peterborough Telegraph column, saying he had to do so in order to retain credibility. It was Bristow’s third offence in two years, and along with the ban was ordered to pay £667, a victim surcharge of £68, and £110 costs. What is it about Peterborough’s MPs and speed limits?

Fiona Onasanya Struck Off as a Solicitor

Three months after being sacked by voters after her conviction for perverting the course of justice, Peterborough’s crooked ex-MP Fiona Onasanya has now also been struck off as a solicitor. Onasanya was summoned to appear at a Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal hearing who found numerous allegations against her proved, including a failure to “uphold the rule of law and proper administration of justice”, failure to “act with integrity” and failure to “behave in a way that maintains the trust the public places in her”. Safe to say she won’t be making a return to politics any time soon…

Fiona Onasanya Back in Court

Former Labour MP Fiona Onasanya has been the target of much ire after the convicted criminal helped Yvette Cooper’s Bill squeak through by one vote. Now it turns out that Onasanya didn’t just go through the aye lobby with her electronic angle tag, potentially in violation of her curfew. She was actually there fresh from yet another appearance in court…

One of her former caseworkers, Jan Goodenough, has taken Onasanya to tribunal over alleged disability discrimination. Goodenough told Cambridge County Court yesterday that she was unfairly treated by Onasanya and that promises were not kept over close access to a toilet at Onasanya’s constituency office in Peterborough.

The recall petition in Peterborough is still open for several more weeks. Her constituents should find out by Monday if their disgraced MP has fallen foul of the law again…

Francois Fumes as Cooper Coup Scrapes Through by One Vote

Rampant Remainers succeeded in ramming an entire Bill through the House of Commons in under 6 hours yesterday – predictably the process was an utter shambles, MPs had no idea which amendments were which, report stage and a third reading debate were entirely skipped and the Bill was so poorly drafted in the first place that Jolyon almost had a meltdown. Mark Francois has been responsible for some fairly fruity outbursts recently but his biblical admonishment last night was on the money:

After the hours of chaos, Yvette Cooper only succeeded in getting her Bill through by a single vote, 313-312. Any number of MPs have been singled out as the guilty party, 20 Tories including 17 former ministers either rebelled or abstained. Literally guilty Fiona Onasanya trapsed through the Aye lobby complete with electronic ankle tag…

Ultimately it changes little, May was always going to seek a longer extension at next week’s European Council in the circumstances anyway. Conspiracy theories that May’s Corbyn pitch is a trap or trick to run down the clock are operating in a parallel universe. Make no mistake, Number 10 is in total chaos and acting purely out of desperation now. May’s long-term strategy was always to trigger an 11th hour crisis in the hope of bouncing MPs – she never for a minute anticipated that it would be so utterly out of her own control…
