Raab Backs Boris

Dominic Raab has come out for Boris in his new absurd court case brought by a man who wants to overturn the referendum result. Speaking to ITV News he said:

“I do worry a little bit about the timing of this, as a private prosecution, and the sense that the cut and thrust democratic debate ought to b decided by your viewers rather than in court, and I think in order to preserve free speech and democratic debate, that’s something we should all look very carefully and consider.”

Where will other leadership contenders stand..?

UPDATE: Matt Hancock and Michael Gove (who’s also used the £350 million figure on a number of occasions) have both criticised the court case. No word yet from the others…

Saj Spiked ‘Clean Campaign Pledge’ Stitch-Up

It turns out Raab and Hancock’s disingenuous Tory Leadership ‘Clean Campaign Pledge‘ was never originally meant to have three signatures on it at all. Guido understands that Team Saj only got tipped-off about the pledge a matter of minutes before it was published and was able to quickly tweet his support immediately after the story was published. Team Saj say they rang round the other campaigns to tip them off too, not one campaign that Guido has spoken to was contacted directly before the pledge went live. You know your stitch-up’s going well when the only other signatory is now trying to distance themselves from it…

Raab First Out of Blocks With Official Campaign Website

Dominic Raab has carried on his early momentum by becoming the first candidate out of the blocks with his own campaign website. Raab has the opposite problem to Boris, he needs to build up momentum early on and hope he can maintain it to have a chance of getting through to the final two. DominicRaab2019 sets a high bar for the other candidates with a shiny, professional design. Tory MP Sir Henry Bellingham is credited as the website’s promoter, he’s now Raab’s Campaign Chairman…

Raab’s big pitch is on the idea of “fairer Britain” – it’s the tagline on his website and his new political ad. Aficionados of political ads may spot the similarities between Raab’s new campaign video and Vote Leave’s 2016 output – Guido hears Team Raab are planning to go big on video content over the next few weeks. The video is slick but the delivery could use a bit more passion if Raab is going to go all the way…

Raab: Foreign Aid Yes, HS2 & Huawei Maybe

Brexit is obviously the dominant issue, but these secondary issues are not unimportant either – broadcasters should be pushing the other candidates to set out their stalls on these too. Particularly given the economic stance of the leader the Tories got last time…

Raab Accuses ‘Others in Government’ of Undermining Brexit Negotiations

Raab’s no deal pitch on Marr was actually most interesting for the brief moment where he accused “others in Government” of having “undermined” that his efforts to negotiate as Brexit Secretary last year. Something which does appear to be vindicated by the reaction of the EU side…
