The European Court of Human Rights has demanded the UK government to respond to a legal claim made by Ben Bradshaw, Caroline Lucas and Alyn Smith over alleged Russian interference in elections. Yes, they’re still banging on about this…
Having fallen flat on their faces in the High Court in 2021 alongside Carole Cadwalladr – the judge ruled the case was “unarguable” and threw it out – the three MPs have now turned to Strasbourg to explain away why Remain lost in 2016. They’d previously claimed Boris had “unlawfully failed to act compatibly with his public law duties in refusing to establish a public inquiry” on the issue, and insist the government has now breached its obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights. Strasbourg now say the government has until the end of April to respond…
The ECHR did add that this request doesn’t yet mean the case has been found admissible. A Downing Street spokesperson said “I would point out this claim has been roundly rejected by UK courts.” Not that that’ll ever placate the likes of Caroline Lucas…
Good news for Christian Wakeford – he is not the only MP who can’t do maths. Now ex-Green Party leader Caroline Lucas has waded in to attack the government for promising green energy, on the grounds that “Nuclear is hugely costly & simply can’t help meet 2035 target”. Do the maths, she says…
Bone-headed & senseless decision. Govt says #SizewellC is vital to meet 2035 electricity decarbonisation target, but *its own impact statement* found we won't get supply for at least another 13-17 years - do the maths! Well, 2022 + 13 is 2035…
Of course, Lucas has form for this. In 2008, when offering her wisdom to Gordon Brown on rising fuel prices, she claimed:
“It simply isn’t true that nuclear power is the answer to rising fuel prices, since the earliest that a new nuclear power station could come on stream is around 2017.”
Wouldn’t an abundance of nuclear energy for the last five years have been useful right about now? This Clegg-style opposition to any sensible energy policy, just because it won’t solve the problem by lunchtime, is precisely why we are where we are…
Rishi tried skating over Caroline Lucas’ question on whether he’ll scrap Liz Truss’s fracking plans, though promised that he sticks to the 2019 manifesto, which was far more fracking-sceptic than Liz’s government. Rishi’s subsequent answer on the government’s environmental promises even received a brief round of applause from eco-zealot Caroline. A very surprise endorsement…
UPDATE: No10 confirm the fracking ban is back…
This picture has just come in from Glasgow. Who was it who criticised the Government for a lack of caution and said their mask policy was “utterly incoherent”? Caroline Lucas even complained on Twitter that
“People are “expected” to wear masks in public places – but why should others be put at risk by some who don’t meet “expectations”?
Utterly hypocritical Caroline…
Why it is really necessary for a local council leader to attend a UN conference Guido doesn’t know given they have absolutely no locus or input into the COP process. To make matters worse Brighton’s Green council leader has been caught with his fly open and forced to apologise after jetting to COP26 in Glasgow. Just days after Caroline Lucas moaned Rishi’s Budget was a joke because of its tax cuts on domestic flights…
Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty took a plane from London to Glasgow, a 460-mile journey after which he made a speech at a protest march led by Greta Thunberg on the importance of cutting carbon emissions. He also chair’s Brighton and Hove council’s carbon neutral working group. According to the LNER website, the train journey from Brighton to Glasgow would have created 26.68kg of CO2 – Cafferty’s plane journey created 169.94kg…
Phelim gave a grovelling apology to The Argus, who uncovered his hypocritical act, claiming he was worried his train might have been cancelled:
“This decision to fly was a major failure of my judgement which goes against my political group’s pledges and principles and I unreservedly apologise.”
“I will be taking my return journey on train. Again, I apologise unreservedly.”
With some of these politicians it’s all just blah, blah, blah…
