Bob Stewart is launching an appeal against his conviction for a racially aggravated public order offence. Chief magistrate Paul Goldspring made the ruling in relation to a heated exchange in 2022 in which a protestor shouted: “Bob Stewart, for how much did you sell yourself to the Bahraini regime?” Stewart’s response: “Go away, I hate you. You make a lot of fuss. Go back to Bahrain…. Now shut up, you stupid man.” Many thought the ruling was harsh…
In the meantime Stewart has given up the whip and announced he’s standing down as a Tory MP in marginal Beckenham. He will presumably make use of the £19,000 raised by the public in his defence…
Colonel Bob Stewart becomes the latest Tory MP to announce he is standing down, his ultra marginal Beckenham seat will be all to play for at the general election. The colourful colonel will be much missed.
The MP for Beckenham was recently found guilty of a supposedly racially aggravated public order offence. During a heated exchange after being accused of being corrupt – “Bob Stewart, for how much did you sell yourself to the Bahraini regime?” he told the protestor: “Go away, I hate you. You make a lot of fuss. Go back to Bahrain…. Now shut up, you stupid man.” Many thought the magistrate Paul Goldspring was harsh in finding the exchange to be a racially aggravated public order offence.
Bob was always outspoken and an old school traditional Tory. His association has begun the search for a new candidate…
Bob Stewart appeared in Westminster Magistrates Court today to plead not guilty to a racially aggravated public order offence. The allegation is that Bob told activist Sayed Ahmed to “go back to Bahrain” in a confrontation on December 14th. Bob is also alleged to have said “get stuffed” and told Syed he is “taking money off my country”. Bob also pled not guilty to an alternative count of “using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress” – relating to the same charge, without the racial element. A one-day trial has been fixed for November 3 rd.
Bob Stewart will again appear in Westminster Magistrates Court (WMC) on July 19th to face two charges related to using “threatening or abusive words”. Although reports suggested Bob’s day in court was due to be today, he initially appeared in WMC on 30th of June before proceedings were adjourned. He faces one charge of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour, which was racially aggravated and one of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. Both are in relation to an incident outside the Embassy of Bahrain. It’s not been a good few weeks for Colonel Bob, who’s also under fire from the Standards Commissioner…

They shall always be open and frank in drawing attention to any relevant interest in any proceeding of the House or its Committees, and in any communications with Ministers, Members, public officials or public office holders.”
Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg isn’t the only enemy combatant turning fire on Colonel Bob. He’s also in court next week for using “abusive words”…
