Simpson’s After Dinner Yarn Unsuitable for Morning TV

Foreign correspondents and veteran BBC journalists are full of interesting yarns from their careers. John Simpson’s yarn live on Good Morning Britain whilst chatting to Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley was a little better suited to after dinner over the port. Madeley and Garraway apologised for Simpson’s unexpected outburst…

Queen Tells Heath he’s “Expendable” in Resurfaced G7 Footage

A brilliant clip of a 1991 G7 drinks reception has emerged and is doing the rounds this morning, featuring an Avengers Assemble cast of Margaret Thatcher, Ted Heath, Lady Diana, a coterie of world leaders and the Queen herself. A real flashback…

One of the highlights of the clip is the Queen saying what we all knew directly to Ted Heath’s face; when the former PM mentioned he’d been to Baghdad the Queen jokingly responds, “I know you did, you’re expendable”. The Queen of diplomacy…

Kwasi Kwarteng Tight-Lipped Over How NHS Pay Rise will Be Funded

With the government announcing that NHS staff will receive a 3% pay rise this year at a cost of around £1.5 billion, questions are inevitably being raised over how the government plans to pay for it. Considering then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the previously planned 1% rise was “what we think is affordable”, there’s clearly some explaining to do…

This morning The Times claims it’s likely to come from a rise in national insurance that was initially intended to fund the elusive new social care plan (albeit dressed up as “a new health and social care tax”, rather than just a manifesto-busting national insurance hike). Yet when asked about this by host Kay Burley on Sky News today, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng kept mum:

“We’re going to pay for it through general taxation, as we pay for everything…I don’t see how we could increase national insurance, but you know, things have been very flexible over the last eighteen months. We’ve lived through an unprecedented time, we’ve spent a huge amount of money that we never thought was possible.”

It’s a running theme of this week for ministers to dodge these kind of questions…

Cummings on Brexit Doubts, Boris Coup and a New Political Party (Maybe)

Guido presents the highlights from Dom’s primetime BBC 2 interview with Laura Kuenssberg last night. The overwhelming consensus from the punditry is he came across as a smug narcissist:

  • Tom Newton-Dunn: Cummings’ narcissism craft-fully exposed. Suspect he will deeply regret doing it.”
  • Harry Cole: “Feels like Pizza Express Woking levels of “was this a good idea, guys”?”
  • Julia Hartley-Brewer: Dominic Cummings thinks he’s done an explosive interview that will rock the Establishment à la Princess Diana with Martin Bashir, when actually it’s closer to Prince Andrew on Newsnight… He’ll regret this in the morning.”
  • Jonathan Reilley: “Dominic Cummings spends best part of ten minutes explaining how he has undue influence over the PM. Then spends ten minutes complaining that Carrie Johnson has undue influence over the PM.”
  • Chris Hope: Dominic Cummings will surely regret this interview.”
  • Tim Montgomerie: Dom Cummings has an ego even bigger than his blogposts.”
  • David Quantic: Dominic Cummings is like a bass player who thinks people will prefer his solo records to the singer’s.”

Then again, we know what Dom thinks of political commentators’ opinions…

Piers Protests Jeremy Corbyn’s Expulsion from Labour Party

A modest group of protestors gathered outside Labour HQ this afternoon to protest Sir Keir’s decision to proscribe four “toxic” hard-left Labour campaign groups from the party at today’s NEC. Considering the meeting was held over Zoom, Guido doubts it had much of an impact…

Nonetheless, Guido spoke to some of these protesters to see what they had to say. There were a colourful range of characters, including Tony “notorious antisemite” Greenstein who insists that claims of anti-Semitism have been manufactured to sabotage the Labour Party, and Piers Corbyn who ardently assured Guido that his brother is not an anti-Semite. It’s a shame 85% of British Jews don’t agree…
