The Tories enjoyed getting an email from questionable fact-checkers FullFact today which went:
“Hope you’re well. I’m getting in touch from Full Fact with a couple of questions about Kemi Badenoch’s Budget response today.
- Ms Badenoch said that next year “Britain will have the highest tax burden in our country’s history. Higher than the 1970s. Higher than in the Second World War. Higher than in the Napoleonic war”. Could you please confirm what figures this is based on, as comparable OBR data only dates back to 1948?
If you’ve any comment please let me know asap.”
A CCHQ aide said: “Income tax was only invented in 1798 to pay for the Napoleonic Wars, and even then it was only 10%. Perhaps Full Fact can get their best people on a fact-finding mission to establish whether Brits in the 18th century were also on the hook for Air Passenger Duty, the Digital Services Tax and Capital Gains Tax…. We eagerly await the outcome of their research.” This will be good…
Robert Jenrick told a rally on Monday:
“They say Chancellors are either undertakers or bookies. This one is an ostrich – and when the Chancellor buries his head in the sand, the rest of us, we’re left staring at his you know what.”
