The Number 10 spokesman has once again had the unenviable task of cleaning up the mess left behind by his boss. This morning he told Lobby hacks that Russia had not successfully interfered with the 2016 referendum, despite Burnham claiming on The Rest is Politics podcast that he was given “a clear answer” that they had. It was like getting blood from a stone for the spokesman to say Burnham accepts the result…
“I would point you back to minister’s words this morning… the Security Minister has spoken about this before. They’ve [Russians] attempted to interfere and haven’t succeeded…”
The spokesman was then asked repeatedly if Burnham even acknowledged the legitimacy of the 2016 referendum result. After a few attempts, he said:
The Prime Minister is focused on the future of the country, he has been very clear about his view on the Brexit deal he inherited… The result is the result…”
‘The result is the result’…
Eventually, he claimed the PM “absolutely accepts the referendum result“. A total mess…
