Add the Netherlands to the long list of countries who have abandoned a wealth tax. Rob Jetten, PM and leader of the Democrats 66 party, said:
“The government has responded to the criticism voiced in both houses of parliament regarding the capital gains system, and provides clarity to Dutch citizens regarding taxing wealth. In addition, this measure strengthens the investment climate.”
The government was hit with an influx of warnings that residents – particularly those of high net worth – would simply leave. He will pursue a high capital gains tax rate instead of taxing unrealised gains of assets held by individuals. Wealth taxes are as impossible as they are stupid…
The Netherlands previously attempted to levy a wealth tax before it was scrapped in 2001, and replaced by an assumed fixed return of 4% on financial assets. It was quashed in 2021 by the supreme court…
